Upgrade sequencying from 2012 SP1 to 2012 R2

Hi,

The scenario is the following:

SCOM 2012 SP1

SCCM 2012 R2

SCVMM 2012 SP1

I don't know what was the installation chronological order of above products.

The client need to upgrade SCVMM(to R2).

This article https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn521010.aspx is about the upgrade sequencying for SC 2012 R2. It states that prior to upgrade SCVMM, first upgrade SCOM and SCCM.

The client has no budget to upgrade SCOM and SCCM first.

The questions are:

SCOM and SCCM must be upgraded first and then upgrade SCVMM?

or

SCOM and SCCM should be upgraded first and then upgrade SCVMM?

______________________________

What happen with SCOM/SCCM/SCVMM if SCVMM is upgraded first?

Thanks in advance!

HNV Gateway "No network interfaces were returned..." problem?

After I have setup a HNV gateway, I am unable to make it work. In the Network Service's properties (in SC VMM) I see this error and have no NICs listed there. Can someone please help me troubleshoot what went wrong?

I have deleted and re-created the gateway VM twice. I do not get any error at any step while creating teh VM or creating the service in VMM. All the tests succeed. Gateway VM has three NICs, External, Management and TenantNetworks

Hi all!

MyeEnvironment: VMM 2012 R2 UR9 (latest UR), Hyper-V cluster

I have this error when I create new VM:

Error (2912)
An internal error has occurred trying to contact the (server name) server: NO_PARAM: NO_PARAM.
WinRM: URL: [http://servername:5985], Verb: [INVOKE], Method: [GetError], Resource: [http://schemas.microsoft.com/wbem/wsman/1/wmi/root/microsoft/bits/BitsClientJob?JobId={20D31719-77FA-4D16-976E-271377A96CE3}]

Unknown error (0x80072f0d)

Recommended Action
Check that WS-Management service is installed and running on server (server name). For more information use the command "winrm helpmsg hresult". If (server name) is a host/library/update server or a PXE server role then ensure that VMM agent is installed and running. Refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2742275 for more details.

The statuses of VMM and its agents are fine.

I saw the articles where people recommend to change BITS port, but I don't think this is the case. In most of cases, if I restart VMM server, this issue solved till next time, when I will create new VM again.

Also I've tried to change hyper-v host during VM creation, but it really didn't help.

Any ideas?

Missing tabs from VM template properties in VMM 2012 SP1

$

One of the VM templates stored in a library had a few properties modified (Numlock, RAM, processor count) and after saving those changes, there are several tabs missing from the properties window.  I could not reproduce this on other VM templates.  Clones of this template also have the tabs missing.

The missing tabs are OS Configuration, Application Configuration and SQL Server Configuration.

TFS 2012 lab management will not allow me to create an environment using this template, stating 'Domain User Name' is an not a valid property.

How do I get the missing tabs back?

Please help me design a HNV fabric for my particular network

Hi folks,

Can someone please help me here?

I am trying to design and setup HNV using VMM and have been reading many books and tutorials about it. I have tried to set it all up multiple times, but no matter what I do, the VMs on the virtual networks are unable to communicate to the internet via Gateway.

I guess my design itself is bad. I still am not clear on a few things. Any pointers will be helpful regarding these questions:

Question 1: How many virtual and physical networks do I really need, specifically in my network?

The tutorials say at least three:

  1. Management Network
  2. Backend / Provider address network
  3. Front end network

However, in my setup, we have only one network....our production network which:

  1. Provides access to internet
  2. Also serves as a management network for the HV hosts

I have three physical servers. Host1 and host2 are configured as HyperV cluster. Host3 is standalone HV hosting the NVGRE Gateway VM.

Question 2: On the HV host which is hosting the NVGRE gateway VM, how many physical NICs do I install? Where do I connect them, physically?

Tried and failed config:

Physical NIC1 : Management

Physical NIC2 : Backend (where do I connect this NIC?)

Physical NIC 3 : Front end (actually connected to the same switch as the management NIC)

Question 3: On the NVGRE Gateway VM, how many virtual NICs do I put? Where do I connect them?

Tried and failed config:

Virtual NIC1 : Management

Virtual NIC2 : Connected to "none VM network" and "backend logical switch"

Virtual NIC3 : Front end logical switch

Question 4: How does network traffic go from this backend logical switch on Gateway VM to the virtual NICs of the VMs running on HNV?

Isn't a physical network cable need to be connected from the backend NIC of host 3 to somewhere on Host 1 and 2

Thanks a lot for your help!

SDN: creating a NAT connection using SLB MUX

I'm trying to install an SDN architecture using the VMM templates. So far, I've been able to install the NC, and successfully make VMs ping each other on the same virtual network using VXLAN. Now, I've installed my load balancers but I had issues trying to connect a VM network to a NAT connection. I'm very intrigued by the output of this cmdlel:

Get-SCNetworkGateway

Service : NC Name : NC Description : ConnectionString : serverurl=https://xx-stw-ts-nc04.xx.ca;SouthBoundIPAddress=10.12.104.54;ser vicename=NC-VMM-TP5 RunAsAccount : VMM domain NVGRESupported : True NVGREMultihopSupported : False MaxRoutingDomainSupported : 50 MaxVSIDSupported : 55 MaxWNVPoliciesSupported : 99999999 MaxVPNConnectionSupported : 250 MaxVPNConnectionPerRoutingDomainSupported : 10 VPNEncryptionMethodsSupported : DES, DES3, AES128, AES192, AES256 VPNIntegrityCheckMethodsSupported : MD5, SHA1, SHA256, SHA384 VPNCipherTransformsSupported : DES, DES3, AES128, AES192, AES256, GCMAES128, GCMAES192, GCMAES256 VPNAuthenticationTransformsSupported : SHA256128, MD596, SHA196, GCMAES128, GCMAES192, GCMAES256 VPNPFSGroupsSupported : PFS1, PFS2, PFS2048, ECP256, ECP384, PFSMM, PFS24 VPNDHGroupsSupported : Group1, Group2, Group14, ECP256, ECP384, Group24 VPNProtocolSupported : IKEv2, GRE, L3, IPSec VPNAuthenticationSupported : PSKOnlyNATSupported : False BGPSupported : True VPNTrafficRegulationSupported : False NATTrafficRegulationSupported : False MeteringSupported : False OutgoingNATRulesSupported : False DeviceId : 087BDC3D9C3028E089A68C404879471C14193F0D Manufacturer : Microsoft Model : Microsoft Network Controller VMNetworkGateways : {} GatewayConnections : {} ConfigurationProvider : Microsoft Network Controller ServerConnection : Microsoft.SystemCenter.VirtualMachineManager.Remoting.ServerConnection ID : 8f9a5e3c-5c26-4f02-8171-ab9c4bcc6755 IsViewOnly : False ObjectType : NetworkGateway MarkedForDeletion : False IsFullyCached : True

It seems that NAT is not supported by my network controller. Is that suppose to happen? I've been trying to follow this procedure: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/larryexchange/2016/05/31/step-be-step-for-deploying-a-sdnv2-using-vmm-tp5-part-3/

But I can't seem to connect to my outside network trough NAT. Any ideas on why the cmdlet tells me NAT is not supported and on how to create a NAT connection with a VM network?

Can we change password of a windows/linux virtual machine using powershell?

wwahost.exe cannot load jvm.dll in Windows 8

Hi,

I'm writing an Input Method DLL which will load Java VM by LoadLibrary("....\jvm.dll");

The JVM loading call is fine in Store Apps of Windows 8.1 & 10, but it fails in Windows 8 when wwahost.exe loads my IME dll, and the last error code after LoadLibrary("....\jvm.dll") is 998 (ERROR_NOACCESS).

Could somebody shed a bit of light on that?

Hyper-V Enviroment Export

Hi,

I am looking for a little assistance. I am trying to see if there is a way that I can use a combination of SCVMM and Visio to output a diagram of our current clustered structure.

I have seen some similar things have been achieved for VMware using powershell and Visio so wondered if anyone has ever had the need or indeed managed this for Hyper-V.

Cheers.

So VMM uses CredSSP...isn't that insecure?

So VMM definitely uses CredSSP. I thought CredSSP was always clear text / plain text / plaintext over the network...how the heck is that secured?

Hello!

Given: domain: firma.local It installed SCVMM 2012 r2 under the domain: a.firma.local. It has a cluster named: cluster.a.firma.local cluster node 2: node1.a.firma.local and node2.a.firma.local task, connect cluster.a.firma.local cluster SCVMM 2012 r2.

Configured run as an account, I try to add a cluster of error pops up:

rechecked everything that is written there - everything is normal. In the DNS A record for all three present name. All names resolvyatsya and Ping. Rights in a domain is. Firewall - off. Not connected cluster. I decided to make knight's move, and ordered all three nodes in the hosts file. Not podklyuchaetsya. I tried to connect nodes poodelnosti. On node1.a.firma.local pops up the same error, but node2.a.firma.local be and can be connected to it. I rechecked everything again. In iron and all of the same settings. Agents set locally, stepping on each node. Does not work. Tell me where and what else can you see?

UPD: made experiment, destroyed the cluster tried to add nodes individually - seeing all nodes. You can add. Assembled on a new cluster - the same error.

I am not a programmer so many of the messages in the VMM thread are Greek to me.  I was in the middle of installing an AMD Radeon HD 8210 driver for Windows 10 when my Acer V5-122P crashed and none of the Acer recovery tools work.  I've finally obtained the error message above.  I also have another message in the Windows System 32 logfile which says 'Operating system version is incompatible with Startup Repair'.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

SCVMM slow performing actions

Hi,

I've just a new SCVMM with that only manages a couple of new Windows 2012 R2 Cluster2. Sql database is on a dedicated server, all the servers has enough resources for now (It's a new setup, there is only some Virtual machines for testing at this time).

Well, on this environment I'm surprised about the response times of the SCVMM, there is some delays when SCVMM performs actions, for example. When I request a Refresh Host Action, it takes some moments before it starts,  or when I create a new VM it takes some time to decide where should create it  (destination disk), or when calculating the Host Rates..

I can't see any problem on the setup, network connectivit is OK, servers has enough resources and I can't see any of these overloaded (cpu+mem)

What can I check? How can I improve the SCVMM response time?

Regards

Unable to deploy gen2 VM

EDIT: I updated the title to clarify that this seems to apply to ANY Generation 2 VM (including a new blank one), not just existing templates.

I'm not entirely sure what changed.  We have a variety of templates defined for different operating systems.  It seems that suddenly none of the ones based on Windows Server 2012 R2 will deploy.  Other templates (such as Server 2008 R2, Linux) will deploy fine.

It starts the process, copies over the VHDs, etc, and I believe at sometime around sysprep, it errors out:

Error (20413)
VMM encountered a critical exception and created an exception report at C:\ProgramData\VMMLogs\SCVMM.a6d3767d-0673-440d-91ab-7eabfcac1b7d\report.txt.

We are on Update Rollup 9.  EDIT: Just upgraded to UR 10 - same problem occurs.

The same error occurs whether we deploy from the VMM Admin Console or the Self Service Portal.

Looking at the referenced file, it shows:

----------------------------------------------------
------------ exceptionObject.ToString() ------------
----------------------------------------------------
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

   at Microsoft.VirtualManager.Engine.TaskRepository.SubtaskBase.Run()
   at Microsoft.VirtualManager.Engine.TaskRepository.Task`1.SubtaskRun(Object state)

If this was just affecting one template, I would assume we had somehow changed it and broke it.  However, since it is affecting multiple different Server 2012 R2 templates, I feel like something is wrong at a different level.  Any ideas?

Issues with Network Controller: Multiple errors

Hello!

I am currently trying to make a SDN test lab. So far I've been able to deploy NC, make VM's ping each other on a virtual network (vwire). I've also been able to present a VIP rule, so that I could have a web server on my VM's connected to my vwire, and that's it. Only web connections could go trough from the outside world. But now I'm trying to link those VM's to the outside world entirely. But I seem to have multiple issues and errors poping up, probably some components that didn't get installed during deployement? I used the procedures from Larry Zhang at Microsoft: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/larryexchange/2016/05/31/step-be-step-for-deploying-a-sdnv2-using-vmm-tp5-part-3/

Here's where I am right now. The output of the cmdlets

 Get-NetworkControllerServer -ConnectionUri $connectionURI |ConvertTo-Json -Depth 8

gives me the following output (among others):

  "ConfigurationState":  {
                                                      "Status":  "Warning",
                                                      "DetailedInfo":  [
                                                                          {

                                                                              "Message":  "Failed to configure the policies on the host device.",
                                                                              "Code":  "PolicyConfigurationFailure"
                                                                          },
                                                                          {
                                                                              "Source":  "VirtualSwitch",
                                                                              "Message":  "Multiple switches with VFP enabled, exists on the host, which is unsupported.",
                                                                              "Code":  "MultipleVfpEnabledSwitches"
                                                                          },
                                                                          {
                                                                              "Source":  "SoftwareLoadBalancerManager",
                                                                              "Message":  "Host is not Connected.",
                                                                              "Code":  "HostNotConnectedToController"
                                                                          }
                                                                       ],
                                                      "LastUpdatedTime":  "\/Date(1467659129673)\/"
                                                  },

For the message Multiple switches with VFP enabled, exists on the host, which is unsupported, there is only one logical switch deployed on each hosts, and it seems to be working so far, so I don't understand why I get this error. I do not understand the other messages tough.

On my network controller, I freqently get the error  Connection to device 3EBCFC92-2A53-4A0F-BAAB-F86ACEAD4E54 failed from process SDNCTLR, please see the Operational channel for more events related to this.

I get 3 different device numbers. I suppose they refer to SLB/MUX and/or gateways, as I have 3 devices that didn't peer with my physical switch. The rests peered like they were suppose to.

Also for the cmdlet  Get-SCNetworkGateway, I get the following output:

Notably, I see that NAT is not supported (NATSupported: False), wich is what, I believe, enables Direct Routing. I might be wrong tough. But so far, I haven't been able to create a NAT connection.

When I try to enable direct routing,  a VMNetworkGateway is created (not with NAT). And its always the same settings:

ObjectType             : VMNetworkGateway
MarkedForDeletion      : False
IsFullyCached          : True

I don't know what to do with this. What is this ip adresse?  I certainly didn't configured it myself, wether in an ip pool or directly. Also I can't delete those gateways. I get this error

Remove-SCVMNetworkGateway : Network service threw an unhandled exception: 'An error occured.

I don't really know what I did wrong or what I could do to fix the issues and make direct routing work. Do you know what could be wrong or what I could try? Feel free to ask for precisions!

Live storage migration using a specific network possible?

Hi,

Our production LAN is 1GB but our backend networks for live migration, Cluster-CSV , and storage are all running on 10GB.

I would like to know if it is possible to select our 10GB live migration network to live migrate virtual machine storage between Hyper-V hosts rather than using the 1GB LAN? Live (VSM).

Many thanks in advance.

SC 2012 VMM SP1 - Unable to Clone or Create VM Template of the Running VM

Hi there,

Does anybody know why I can clone or create the VM template of the turned off VM, but the "Clone"/"Create VM Template" options are disable for the running VM?

This happens for Gen 1 and Gen 2 VMs.

Many thanks, in advance!
