rebooting VMs often yields a 169 IP address

$

Hello,

I've been having a re-occurring issue where a VM reboots (Planned) and occasionally gets a 169 link local address. Its not all the time and random amongst which VM does it and on what Hyper-V cluster. The quick fix is to just disable/enable the NIC. The addresses are statically provisioned through VMM.

Setup A:

The Hyper-V hosts used to plug into in a cisco 4510 chassis (Single MAC Table). There was never an issue then.

Setup B:

We went to new core switches (IBM 8124) 10 gig switches (Multiple independent MAC Tables). These switches were vastly underpowered and chalked the 169 issue to that.

Current Setup:

We have replaced the IBM switches with Brocade VCS switches in a logical chassis configuration (one shared MAC address table but it needs to sync amongst the switches). The issue is not as rampant but still there.

The Vswitches are configured to use teaming, switch independent with both NICsactive/active

Now that we have brocade switches that support LACP fast timeout we will be converting the NICS to LACP links. I'm wondering is the problem is related to the MAC address being tied to a port and the other switch is slow to see the change causing the other switch to see that address in use? By making it an LACP link the MAC is tied to the Logical port and it wont actually ever switch ports on the Host (if that makes sense?).

Has anyone seen this before?

SCVMM 2012 R2 - "Computer Name" Missing from Guest Machines?

Hi,

Just set up SCVMM 2012 R2 on Windows Server 2012. Problem- after creating a few VM's (hosted on a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V host), I'm noticing that on the "General" tab of the Properties dialog for VMs with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2012, the "Computer name:" field is blank. I have the Virtual machine guest services installed on the VMs, and all updates installed on the VMs. On VMs running 2012 R2 as the OS, the "Computer name:" field is populated correctly. Is this a known issue, an unknown issue, or am I just doing something wrong? The problem here ultimately is that I'm trying to create a Visual Studio Lab Management environment, and when doing so, it complains that the computer name is missing when I try to add the machines to the environment.

Thanks

SCVMM HA Cluster?

Hello everyone,

I need to move my existing SCVMM deployment off of its current hardware.  I have the option of deploying it inside a VM on one of the Hyper-V clusters its intended to manage but it seems like having SCVMM running in the very thing its meant to manage is a little backwards.

So my other option would be to put it in a GEO cluster in two separate data centers.  I have resources to do it either way but thought I would bounce the option around here first.

Would really appreciate everyones thoughts.

Thanks.

Unable to deploy gen2 VM

EDIT: I updated the title to clarify that this seems to apply to ANY Generation 2 VM (including a new blank one), not just existing templates.

I'm not entirely sure what changed.  We have a variety of templates defined for different operating systems.  It seems that suddenly none of the ones based on Windows Server 2012 R2 will deploy.  Other templates (such as Server 2008 R2, Linux) will deploy fine.

It starts the process, copies over the VHDs, etc, and I believe at sometime around sysprep, it errors out:

Error (20413)
VMM encountered a critical exception and created an exception report at C:\ProgramData\VMMLogs\SCVMM.a6d3767d-0673-440d-91ab-7eabfcac1b7d\report.txt.

We are on Update Rollup 9.  EDIT: Just upgraded to UR 10 - same problem occurs.

The same error occurs whether we deploy from the VMM Admin Console or the Self Service Portal.

Looking at the referenced file, it shows:

----------------------------------------------------
------------ exceptionObject.ToString() ------------
----------------------------------------------------
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

   at Microsoft.VirtualManager.Engine.TaskRepository.SubtaskBase.Run()
   at Microsoft.VirtualManager.Engine.TaskRepository.Task`1.SubtaskRun(Object state)

If this was just affecting one template, I would assume we had somehow changed it and broke it.  However, since it is affecting multiple different Server 2012 R2 templates, I feel like something is wrong at a different level.  Any ideas?

SCVMM Replica VM settings greyed out

Hi,

We have two 2012-R2 Hyper-V clusters with replication enabled on VMs.  Both are hosted in our local data-centre and active load is spread across the two clusters with cluster A acting as a replica site for cluster B and vice versa as an additional level of redundancy.

We have SCVMM 2012-R2 installed to manage these clusters, and have noticed we can no longer change settings on the replica VM instance.  Example being we increase RAM on a VM, and would then ensure the change is made on the replica.  This used to be achievable via SCVMM but the properties are now greyed out along with most other options from the context menu of the VM.

This appears to have happened since we realised we were behind on updates for SCVMM and installed rollup 6 for SCVMM, later updating to rollup 10.  Has there been a change in the way replication can be managed though SCVMM, as I note that these updates have brought in Azure to the system.

Any advice appreciated.

VMM 2012R2 Rollup 11 - File Server Share Disappearing Randomly

$

Hi everyone,

I have an issue where a share created on our scale out file server keeps disappearing from within System Center VMM 2012R2 RU 11.

The share still exists on the actual scale out file server, but disappears from underneath File Servers, and as a result, it is removed from available storage of the Hyper-V Nodes.

I have to recreate the share* from within VMM (even though the share still exists and is accessible on the SOFS Cluster) and then add it back to my Hyper-V Nodes. Until this is done, my VMs are still running (because the share still exists) but are in unsupported configuration (because it isn't added to the nodes).

The share is simply called VMStore$, no jobs are being run that would interfere with the shares, it doesn't seem to have any rhythm, just randomly you will be trying to deploy a VM and it will show no valid storage available and that's how you know it's gone.

Any ideas?

vmms, nvspwmi, or vhdsv services not running error

Hi All,

In scvmm 2012 r2 I am getting the following error:

Error (12704)
Unable to connect to the Hyper-V service on the server hyper-vdevhost2.domain.local.

Recommended Action
Ensure that the Hyper-V services (vmms, nvspwmi, or vhdsv) and the Virtual Machine Manager Agent are installed and running on the server hyper-vdevhost2.esom6win.local.

What are vmms, nvspwmi, or vhdsv services?
I have checked that in my hyper-vdevhost2.domain.local machine System center virtual machine agent, WMI, WRM(WS management), User access logging, IP helper services are running under Local System account except WRM. WRM is running under Network Service account.

In my SCVMM 2012 R2 server related services are running under domain admin user account except WRM. WRM is running under Network Service account.

How can I resolve this problem?

Thanks in advance,
Mohak Mahato

Hello,

i'm trying to create multiple VM's from a VM Template in SCVMM using the following Power Shell Script

[int]$VMcount = Read-host “Input Number of VMs”

$VMTemplate = Read-host "Input VMTemplate Name"
$VMName = Read-host “Input Base Name”
$VMHost = Read-host "Input Host Name"
$VMPath = Read-host "Input VM Path (example: C:\Clusterstorage\Volume1)"

$Total = 1

While ($total -le $VMCount) {$NewVMName = $VMName-” + $total

Write-Output $virtualMachineConfiguration

New-SCVirtualMachine -Name $NewVMName -VMHost "$VMHost" -path "$VMPath" -VMTemplate "$VMTemplate" -ReturnImmediately -DelayStartSeconds “0"

$Total++

}

#End

When running the .ps1 file i'm getting the following error:

"New-SCVirtualMachine : The term 'New-SCVirtualMachine' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script
file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct
and try again"

is someone can advise what is wrong with this power shell script?

i'm using microsoft system center 2012

Thanks.

SDN: creating a NAT connection using SLB MUX

I'm trying to install an SDN architecture using the VMM templates. So far, I've been able to install the NC, and successfully make VMs ping each other on the same virtual network using VXLAN. Now, I've installed my load balancers but I had issues trying to connect a VM network to a NAT connection. I'm very intrigued by the output of this cmdlel:

Get-SCNetworkGateway

It seems that NAT is not supported by my network controller. Is that suppose to happen? I've been trying to follow this procedure: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/larryexchange/2016/05/31/step-be-step-for-deploying-a-sdnv2-using-vmm-tp5-part-3/

But I can't seem to connect to my outside network trough NAT. Any ideas on why the cmdlet tells me NAT is not supported and on how to create a NAT connection with a VM network?

Missing tabs from VM template properties in VMM 2012 SP1

One of the VM templates stored in a library had a few properties modified (Numlock, RAM, processor count) and after saving those changes, there are several tabs missing from the properties window.  I could not reproduce this on other VM templates.  Clones of this template also have the tabs missing.

The missing tabs are OS Configuration, Application Configuration and SQL Server Configuration.

TFS 2012 lab management will not allow me to create an environment using this template, stating 'Domain User Name' is an not a valid property.

How do I get the missing tabs back?

HNV Gateway "No network interfaces were returned..." problem?

After I have setup a HNV gateway, I am unable to make it work. In the Network Service's properties (in SC VMM) I see this error and have no NICs listed there. Can someone please help me troubleshoot what went wrong?

I have deleted and re-created the gateway VM twice. I do not get any error at any step while creating teh VM or creating the service in VMM. All the tests succeed. Gateway VM has three NICs, External, Management and TenantNetworks

Issues with Network Controller: Multiple errors

$

Hello!

I am currently trying to make a SDN test lab. So far I've been able to deploy NC, make VM's ping each other on a virtual network (vwire). I've also been able to present a VIP rule, so that I could have a web server on my VM's connected to my vwire, and that's it. Only web connections could go trough from the outside world. But now I'm trying to link those VM's to the outside world entirely. But I seem to have multiple issues and errors poping up, probably some components that didn't get installed during deployement? I used the procedures from Larry Zhang at Microsoft: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/larryexchange/2016/05/31/step-be-step-for-deploying-a-sdnv2-using-vmm-tp5-part-3/

Here's where I am right now. The output of the cmdlets

 Get-NetworkControllerServer -ConnectionUri $connectionURI |ConvertTo-Json -Depth 8

gives me the following output (among others):

  "ConfigurationState":  {
                                                      "Status":  "Warning",
                                                      "DetailedInfo":  [
                                                                          {

                                                                              "Message":  "Failed to configure the policies on the host device.",
                                                                              "Code":  "PolicyConfigurationFailure"
                                                                          },
                                                                          {
                                                                              "Source":  "VirtualSwitch",
                                                                              "Message":  "Multiple switches with VFP enabled, exists on the host, which is unsupported.",
                                                                              "Code":  "MultipleVfpEnabledSwitches"
                                                                          },
                                                                          {
                                                                              "Source":  "SoftwareLoadBalancerManager",
                                                                              "Message":  "Host is not Connected.",
                                                                              "Code":  "HostNotConnectedToController"
                                                                          }
                                                                       ],
                                                      "LastUpdatedTime":  "\/Date(1467659129673)\/"
                                                  },

For the message Multiple switches with VFP enabled, exists on the host, which is unsupported, there is only one logical switch deployed on each hosts, and it seems to be working so far, so I don't understand why I get this error. I do not understand the other messages tough.

On my network controller, I freqently get the error  Connection to device 3EBCFC92-2A53-4A0F-BAAB-F86ACEAD4E54 failed from process SDNCTLR, please see the Operational channel for more events related to this.

I get 3 different device numbers. I suppose they refer to SLB/MUX and/or gateways, as I have 3 devices that didn't peer with my physical switch. The rests peered like they were suppose to.

Also for the cmdlet  Get-SCNetworkGateway, I get the following output:

Notably, I see that NAT is not supported (NATSupported: False), wich is what, I believe, enables Direct Routing. I might be wrong tough. But so far, I haven't been able to create a NAT connection.

When I try to enable direct routing,  a VMNetworkGateway is created (not with NAT). And its always the same settings:

I don't know what to do with this. What is this ip adresse?  I certainly didn't configured it myself, wether in an ip pool or directly. Also I can't delete those gateways. I get this error

Remove-SCVMNetworkGateway : Network service threw an unhandled exception: 'An error occured.

I don't really know what I did wrong or what I could do to fix the issues and make direct routing work. Do you know what could be wrong or what I could try? Feel free to ask for precisions!

Dynamic optimization task always stuck

Hello! I have an old issue with VMM - dynamic optimization task is running and never ends (and actually it's doing nothing). My env.: VMM 2012R2 UR11, few Hyper-V hosts Win 2012 R2 in a cluster configuration. We run dynamic optimization task every 30 min. The issue's behaviour: I can see the task Dynamic Optimizer in the running state, but it's stuck on 33% (for example) and no VM's are migrating. This morning I came to office and found it's still running from yesterday 5PM (almost 13 hours). Also I find the errors like this:

Error (2606)

Unable to acquire a NoDelete lock on object 571c5a85-c8a8-4f9d-9d76-ba6e234b3584 of type VM because it is locked by task 9448bc92-4a27-4d50-9217-7f84c7ad470e (Run the dynamic optimizer) with a Delete lock.

Recommended Action
Cancel the task holding the lock or wait for it to complete and try the operation again.

Basically this issue exists almost more than 1 year, but after applying UR11 (day before yesterday) it became more annoying. Usually it's stuck 1-3 times per week, but not it's happen everyday.

We solving this issue temporary by killing vmmservice.exe service, but on the next day we have same issue. Any advice why it's happen?

Previously we did some changes how VMM keeps jobs history, we decreased the days and now we have only around 6000 records. I know it shouldn't be more than 10.000.

Sometimes I found many VMs in "Missing" state. I have to migrate them back to original host and run repair or VM refresh. Does it related somehow with vmmservice reset? Why VMs are getting "Missing" state?

SCVMM console updates

I am running SCVMM 2012R2. That server was updated with rollup 10 via windows update. I have a few remote servers that I runn the admin console on that are now not connecting. I also have Xenapp servers that use machine creation services that are broke as well. I have read that sometimes a version mismatch between the console and server will cause this issue. I have downloaded the console install package and attempted to run on the console servers. I receive an error stating that the update package cannot be installed as there may be missing parts, the product is not installed or the versions are wrong.

If someone could please let me know the proper way to upgrade to the same version of software that the main SCVMM is running on console servers.

Thank you

Lab with Hyper-V, SCVMM and NVGRE. How many Servers do I need? Nano server, on old Hardware, drivers?

This might be better located in a Server 2016 TP5 forum, but I will  post it here because its not really Server 2016 specific question.

I need to get some lab equipment for Hyper-V, will Migrate from VMWare to Hyper-V with Server 2016 and System Center VMM 2016, I will use Network Virtualization. I plan to get  two servers to cluster, do I need a third to use as a NVGRE gateway?

Second, if I plan to use the Nano server on Lab equipment (old lab equipment) will it have drivers and so on when running on a Host as Compute?

Preferred Owners Hosts setting is not considered when manually starting a optimization of the cluster

Hi all,

I configered a VM with two preferred owner hosts on which the VM is currently not running on. For "Possible Owners all Hosts are selected". Then I manually start the "Optimize Hosts" on the cluster in VMM. My assumtion was that the dynamic optimizer job would see that the VM is not running on a preferred owner host and would list the VM to be moved. However, the output of the optimize host job is: The host cluster is either within desired resource usage limits or no futher optimization is possible.

Is this correct? Does the dynamic optimizer not care about the "Preferred Owners" setting?

Cheers, Gunter
