Cannot remove failed VMM server

$

Hi,

I had a VMM server fail on me which required a rebuild.  During the commissioning of the new server, the client decided  to change the name of the server.  Once i'd rebuilt the server and restored the old database, now I have 2x VMM servers, old name and new name.

I cannot find out how to remove the old VMM server from the GUI, nor PowerShell.  Editing the database directly is not an option, this is a production install.  I can see how to remove old dead hosts, but not dead VMM servers.

Also rather worryingly the "old" server name is responding and green (which is not possible!)  VMM is not detecting the fact the server is actually down\gone.

Thanks

Licensing for SCVMM 2012 using with HyperV for Citrix

Hi,

I was planning to deploy citrix xendesktop for test purpose using hypervisor as Hyper-V.

It is necessary to use SCVMM to connect with Citrix studio when Hyper-V is used as Hypervisor.

I have Hyper-V already installed on a server. Would I need any license to download and use SCVMM 2012? How can I confirm? Please advise.

Set -SCVirtualNetworkAdapter script is failing while cloning ubuntu vm

Set -SCVirtualNetworkAdapter script is failing while cloning ubuntu vm with OS 14.X and 16.X versions. The IPs are allocating by granting but are not reflected in OS of cloned VM. The VM is not getting new IPs and if it gets then after some time automatically changed with Parent VM's IP addresses in SCVMM. I checked with "ifconfig" command in VM console , it is showing parent VM's IPs. The above script is working for Windows, Linux but not for ubuntu. Is there any step to assign IP addresses to OS of cloned Ubuntu VM ? Please give a reply with solution....

VM's deployed from library try to boot from the recovery partition

I stored some VM's that were no longer used in the library. I then had to deploy them again, so i went to the Library tab, then to 'Stored Virtual Machines and Services', right click the VM (the box was ticked to tell it the HDD had the OS on it), then click Deploy. After it was deployed it wouldn't boot, inaccessible boot device.

I then booted from Server 2012 R2 DVD into the recovery command prompt and ran 'bootrec /scanos' - it found the OS but it was on the 'D:' drive.

The recovery partition was set as C: drive for some reason. After running the standard bcdedit commands it works.

Why does it do this? Why doesn't it just leave the Windows partition as C and boot from it just like it was before it was stored in the library? What changed it?

cheers,

Jon

VSwitch, LACP Teaming and Reconfiguration

$

I'm trying to reconfigure a logical switch on a VMM-managed cluster.

The cluster is configured as follows:

  • VMM runs as a VM on the cluster
  • VMM is connected to the network via "Fabric" logical switch (on VLAN 1234, subnet A)
  • Hosts are connected to the network via LACP Team, "Fabric" logical switch and VNIC (on VLAN 1200, subnet B)
  • Physical network switch does routing between subnet A and B

So connectivity between VMM and the Host systems is via a LACP team, Logical Switch and VNIC on the host.

I want to reconfigure the Fabric logical switch, so I need to delete the Fabric logical switch and VNIC, then recreate it.

When I delete the logical switch, the team is removed (as expected) and VMM waits for the host to become contactable so it can continue reconfiguration.

I note that the physical NICs, once unbound from the team, don't get a valid IP address, which obviously is stalling the whole process.  They also fall back to untagged (i.e. VLAN 0) frames as there's no VLAN set directly on the NIC driver.

What's the correct way of making this work?  Is there some way to make VMM transition the static IP configuration set on the VNIC to one of the physical NIC when the team and vswitch is deleted?  What about any VLANs in use?  Do we need to configure the switches to convert untagged frames to the appropriate VLAN to support this process?

Need a proposal

Rasbian and Microsoft Virtual Machine

Is it possible to run an ISO system image of rasbian on Microsoft virtual machine/engine? I have tried to start a machine using the 'Type' listing of 'other' under the OS menu then under 'version' I have tried DOS and 'other/unknown', but to no success. Anyone with and experience and or advice to give would be very gratefully received. My main goal is to create a Virtual private network using an old raspberry PI, SD card COOM's to configure rasbian. and then use puttygen/putty software to create the cryptographic tunnel  to the pi. then link the raspberry PI to the router and in theory all traffic should be received by the PI's IP'4 then be forwarded to the device? is this possible? I did use the PI as a VPN before but It will not work any longer. I get a message that basically say's 'something needs configuring' once again any experience and or advice I would be grateful for very much. I wanted to ask the question about the VM and rasbian as I thought it may be a way to figure out how to configure and familiarise with rasbian quick but as usual this did not turn out to be the case. Also Is there any way a internet protocol six address could be obtained and used as the VPN's IP? I successfully manually configured some of the devices to only use the IP6 addresses as they seem much more secure? I have read that certain systems in certain parts of the world do not even have old IP4 address options anymore is this true? Anyway I have gone way of topic and apologise. Thanks for the time!

VM templates, unattend.xml, application profiles and GuiRunOnce

$

How do VM template customization (unattend.xml, application profiles, SQL Server profiles and GuiRunOnce items) actually work together?

I'm guessing that VMM takes the supplied unattend.xml (if any) and augments it with additional config to perform the additional customization steps. For example, I'm guessing it sets up a AutoLogon and adds more GuiRunOnce steps to execute the installation of the application profiles, SQL profiles and the template GuiRunOnce commands.

Also, does VMM have a way to know when the whole process is finished? Like does it add a GuiRunOnce step to do a "finished" notification back to VMM or does it just fire it off and forget it?

Can anyone shed some light on this?

What I'm trying to do is automate kick off of a MDT task sequence after VMM does the initial OS install. I thought the best way would be to set up a GuiRunOnce to start the LTI process. Of course this won't work if VMM does other stuff that interferes with MDT and vice-versa.

IPAM + VMM - should ranges/blocks created in IPAM appear in VMM?

$

Hi all,

I'm reposting this here on advice from the IPAM forum.

All hosts/IPAM/VMM are 2016.

I'm currently trialing IPAM + VMM on a test environment, prior to roll out to our production systems. My initial question is surrounding the integration between IPAM and VMM. I've set up the integration, and it's working fine: if I create a new IP pool/range within VMM, it appears under 'Virtualised IP address range' within IPAM, which is great.

However, if I create an IP range or IP block within IPAM, and link it to a the VMM instance, it doesn't appear on the VMM console. Is this to be expected? (I can't seem to find much out there about how the integration works, once it's been configured.)

Below are the settings I used to create the range, and that it's not showing within VMM... If that's how it works, then fine, but I don't want to be missing a trick!

Thanks,

Joe!

SCVMM 2016 Bare Metal Install frequently fails at 99% (Randomly)

$

We are facing a troubling issue with System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2016 UR5 when Bare Metal Deploying to a physicalHPhost. All is going well and the bare metal process is nearly complete when we get the following error: HRESULT 0x803381fa. (see screen capture below)

While there have been rare occasions where the installation completes successfully however the next attempt(s) will fail.  There does not appear to be any clear reason why we are failing.  In fact it is quite random.  We have eliminated group policy, post install scripts, IPV6, VHDx images, patches are up to the new July 24th release in both the VMM hosts (which are clusters for SCVMM) and in the VHDx image.  Frankly it seems like a timing issue within VMM.  It is as if the process does not wait long enough for the host to finish the completion of the switch (called converged switch in our case) before it starts requesting progress and then fails the entire process.  I am no expert but take note of the timing in the verbose log included below.  It seems theswitch creation was initiated @ 2018-07-19 17:33:46.257  and then the VMM sequence started checking for progress @2018-07-19 17:33:46.299  and 2018-07-19 17:33:51.301 however it then fails @ 2018-07-19 17:34:17.974  that is less than one minute later!!?

In a large domain environment, where DNS replication takes time and SCVMM may be far removed from the hosts, timing may come into play.  In our three weeks of pounding our head on the wall, it seems to be a timing issue we are facing.  Question: can we allow for more time for this switch creation process and progress checks to complete before we fail the whole task?  A few minutes after the deployment, the "failed" host willappear green within the SCVMM console with the converged switch created (although some port configurations are missing).  So it appears that even though the bare metal deployment fails, the process was in fact completed.  But some final steps are missed.  Thank you for any ideas or suggestions.

Allowing VMs to PXE

$

Is it possible to configure VMM to allow VMs to PXE?

In my environment, it looks like VMM intercepts DHCP/PXE done by the VM NIC and doesn't pass them onto the network (we use ip-helpers and I cannot see any forwarded traffic). I can see the VM starting the PXE process, but not acquiring a DHCP lease or downloading any boot files. DHCP done by the VM OS (WinPE, Windows or Linux) works fine.

Bonus question - can the PXE server be shared by VMM and SCCM?

VMM 2016 console high CPU usage/freeze/unresponsive

$

We're running VMM 2016 console on a WS2016 RDSH, similarly as we're (still) using VMM 2012 R2 console on a WS2012R2 RDSH (in a different environment).

The VMM2016 console usually freezes/becomes unresponsive if we keep it running for longer periods of time. Then it behaves like this:

- if the window had focus, you can't click any controls or anything, but it also doesn't change to the transparent white typical for unresponsive applications (with the changed "not responding" header). It just doesn't do anything.

- if the window didn't had focus or was minimalized, you can't get it to show again

In both scenarios, the console takes 100% of the CPU (core) and there are two things I can do:

1) kill the program in task manager and restart it

2) wait for very long time (tens of minutes to hours) and sometimes it will become responsive again, sometimes not

There are no running tasks in VMM during these periods.

Is anyone experiencing this?

APIPA addresses on Microsoft Failover Cluster Virtual Adapter

$

I'm currently working an issue where we are having CSV problems (STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT, causing all VMs to power off).

As part of my investigation, I noticed the following:

  • When the CSV goes to Downlevel, it is showing that it's accessing a SMB CSV path containing a APIPA address:
    \Device\SmbCsv\169.254.2.152\GUID$
  • That address is bound to a "Tunnel Adapter Local Area Connection" adapter on another host, which is a Failover Cluster Virtual Adapter
  • We have IPv6 disabled on all non-loopback interfaces in our Hypervisors by setting the DisabledComponents registry entry to 0xFF

So, the above makes me wonder if:

  • Does IPv6 need to be enabled on Hypervisors in a Failover Cluster?
  • Why is an APIPA address being used?
Can anyone point me to current information on this topic?

I’m looking for a best practice or a recommended suggestion by anyone who has configured an S2D cluster with VMM (virtual machine manager). I have configured S2D clusters several times but have recently begun researching how to implement S2D utilizing VMM too and specifically the initial network configuration of the S2D servers before they are clustered in VMM.

Should the servers be set up the way you would if VMM was not part of the intended configuration, in my case configuring 2 dual port adapters (4 ports) into a SET (switch embedded team) and configure IP network connectivity for management?

Or, create the virtual switch and the team inside of virtual machine manager after importing the cluster servers? Which complicates matters because I assume you would need some form of temporary adapter connected to have VMM see the servers first.

I’ve read articles on S2D setup but the articles I’ve read for S2D setup with VMM seem to omit going over my question above as if the author assumes you already have the servers networking configured. It just seems unclear to me how networking should start off for this S2D with VMM scenario.

Hello,

We have this strange issue - when I try to extend a .vhdx - the job fails, however the disk is expanded, but I need to run a Repair-SCVirtualMachine job afterwards.

Info about the enviroment:

Hyper-V 2016 Cluster with 16 hosts

HPE BL460c G9 blades running HPE 2018.03 SPP

The VM's are Veeam Replica VM's from a 2012 R2 Cluster, which has been made a Permanent Failover by Veeam.

If I tend to install a clean 2012, 2012 R2 or 2016 VM with bare OS, a Dynamic Disk at 30GB on the SCSI Adapter - and extends with 1GB, no problems.

So, it seems that were having issues with Veeam Replica VM's.

Any suggestions? :)

Error (12700)

VMM cannot complete the host operation on the 'HYPER-V-HOST01' server because of the error: 'GUEST-DC01' failed to modify device 'Virtual Hard Disk'. (Virtual machine ID 370A1ACF-15CB-4EDC-BEA6-71A766482296)
Unknown error (0x8002)

Recommended Action
Resolve the host issue and then try the operation again.

SCVMM Migration, No available connection to selected VM Network can be found

Whenever I attempt to transfer from one server to another in our SCVMM environment and whenever I select migrate there is an X under explanation that says "No available connection to selected VM Network can be found". I have attempted this here

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/lync/en-US/4d5cd949-c5a2-42e9-9640-1ce69aa5aa73/no-available-connection-to-selected-vm-network-can-be-found?forum=virtualmachingmgrhyperv

but this didn't seem to work because I see no network attached to the VMs and I have attempted to give them a switch with the same name (I had read that that would work) and that didn't. I am a little confused here and could really use some help here if possible. This is the final step in a server migration for me and would love to knock it out.

Migrate VM's between clusters - CredSSP vs Kerberos

We have several different clusters all managed by VMM 2016 UR4.  We are trying to migrate VM's between clusters (migrations within a cluster works fine) and getting an error.

Error (12700)
VMM cannot complete the host operation on the 'source host' server because of the error: Virtual machine migration operation for 'vm failed at migration destination 'destination host (Virtual machine ID BC3EB07E-E9A8-48D5-AB1D-A7926DB7D4EF)

User '<serviceid>' failed to create external configuration store at '\\share: General access denied error. (0x80070005)
Unknown error (0x8001)

Recommended Action
Resolve the host issue and then try the operation again.

We have never tried to migrate between clusters and currently have everything configured for CredSSP.  From the documentation we've found though everything points to using Kerberos for cluster to cluster vm migrations?  Has anyone done cluster to cluster migrations via CredSSP from within VMM?

SCVMM 2016 - NAT connections fail after a while

I am trying to get a lab setup to work, but NAT connections from the VMs fails after a few minutes.

I have three hosts: HOST1, HOST2, and GWHOST1. GWHOST1 runs the gateway VM, GATEWAY1. HOST1 runs VM1 and VM3 and HOST2 runs VM2.

VMQ is not enabled anywhere.

The gateway VM has one default route (to the external gateway 172.20.0.1).

VM1 and VM2 are connected to the virtualized VM network Test1 (192.168.1.0/24).

VM3 is connected to the virtualized network Test2 (192.168.2.0/24).

The provider address space is 172.21.0.0/24.

The external (front end) address space is 172.20.0.0/24.

Scenario 1:

After initial setup I start ping -t 172.20.0.1 (an external router) on VM3 and it starts to ping for a while. After a few minutes ping fails with 'Request time out'. As long as ping in the VM works I can ping -p 172.21.0.3, the provider address for GW-External, from HOST2 and HOST1. When ping stops responding in the VM ping -p to 172.21.0.3 also stops responding to HOST1 and HOST2 (Detsination host unreachable). Why does 172.21.0.3 disappear?

Disconnecting and reconnecting the Test1 from the gateway reestablishes 172.21.0.3 and ping starts to work again from the VM.

Scenario 2:

I start ping -t 172.20.0.1 on all VM machines and it works for a while. After a few minutes ping fails with Request timed out. At the same time 172.21.0.3 stops responding to ping -p.

Disconnecting and reconnecting Test1 from the gateway reestablishes NAT for Test1 (ping works). Disconnecting Test2 from the gateway makes NAT for Test1 start to fail and 172.21.0.3 disappears again.

I am at a loss to get this to work. There seems to be some kind of software glitch but I can't believe MS releases something with such a fundamental bug, on the other hand DPM 2016 was a real horror story when it was released.

I have tested the above on different physical hosts, different switches, and changed cables. No luck.

Any ideas?

Hans Carlsson

We have power failure not long ago. And after that we found that the VMM service role is failed.

From error report i found that :

Exception Message=Unable to connect to the VMM database because of a general database failure.
Ensure that the SQL Server is running and configured correctly, then try the operation again.
EIP=0x00007ffa5d383c58

Microsoft.VirtualManager.DB.CarmineSqlException: Unable to connect to the VMM database because of a general database failure.
Ensure that the SQL Server is running and configured correctly, then try the operation again. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user 'domain\scvm.service'.

I have check the vmm account is allright and the SQL service is running.

What others can be wrong, that the service still cannot start?

Erik
