Hello,

Can someone provide a good Step by Step configuration in order to install VM using Unattended installation file? ( SCVMM 2016)

Or can someone tell me what i am missing form the fallowing steps:

1) Go to VM Templates

2) Use an existing VM template or a virtual disk stored in the library ( Select: Blank Disk -Snall.vhdx)

3) VM Template Identity: Select Generation 2

4) Hardware Configuration: Add Virtual DVD iso image ; Disable Secure Boot Enable

5)Configure Operating System
        - I have created an answer file and added it to the Scripts> Answer File  ( if you have a good example please provide because i am not sure if it is working correctly what i created. Please provide a tested one because i took from internet more but they Windows System Image Manager is failing on loading them)

6) I have tried to deploy the VM using the template but the VM does not get deployed. I need to reset it because it is trying to boot from the network and after that it reaches the screen to select the language even tough i have added it in the Answer File)

Thank you,

Hello,

I removed checkpoints for a virtual machine. Now when I create new VM using the vhdx file machine boots and asks for chkdsk. I skipped it and machine boots but when chkdsk is run in readonly mode I get below error;

Error:- Snapshot was deleted chkdsk cannot continue. Snapshot error occurred while scanning the drive...

Please provide a solution to avoid boot asking for chkdsk..

thanks

SCVMM Move Database to another server

Hi,

I would like to move database from current database server to new server

We have cluster scvmm both running on windows 2012 R2. e.g. SCVMM01, SCVMM02

Things I tried

  1. Backup the SCVMM Database (from SQL Management)
  2. Stop SCVMM Services, Agent on activat node (e.g. SCVMM01)
  3. Take the VMM cluster resource offline
  4. Restore the DB onto new server with SCVMM login account (Same db account which was use on other server)
  5. Change reg "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager Server \ Settings \ Sql"
  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager Server\Settings\Sql]
    "InstanceName"= "SCVMMDB01_NEW\\DB_INSTANCE_NAME"
    "DatabaseName "= "VirtualManagerDB"
    "ConnectionString"="Integrated Security = SSPI;Application Name= VirtualMachineManager;Max Pool Size=500;Encrypt=true;TrustServerCertificate=true;Server=SCVMMDB01_NEW\\DB_INSTANCE_NAME;database=VirtualManagerDB"
    "OnRemoteServer"=dword:00000001
    "MachineName"= "SCVMMDB01_NEW"
    "MachineFQDN"= "SCVMMDB01_NEW.Domain.com"
    "Port"= dword: 00000000

6. Bring Cluster Online which now it keep failing to start and also unable to restart the scvmm services.

"Clustered role 'ClusterName' has exceeded its failover threshold.  It has exhausted the configured number of failover attempts within the failover period of time allotted to it and will be left in a failed state.  No additional attempts will be made to bring the role online or fail it over to another node in the cluster.  Please check the events associated with the failure.  After the issues causing the failure are resolved the role can be brought online manually or the cluster may attempt to bring it online again after the restart delay period."

Can you please let me know what i'm doing wrong here.

VMM Client connect errors after upgrade to 1801

Hi

We upgraded our VMM Cluster from 2016 RU4 to 1801 last weekend. The process was not smooth. I ended up throwing away the VMM cluster, de-installing VMM from both VMM nodes, and reinstalling 1801 with the existing database. This method ended up being the smoothest and in the end I had a working 1801 VMM. This also actually the supported upgrade path.

But, for 6 days in a row we see that VMM is not accepting client connections during the night. The VMM service is running on one of the nodes in the VMM cluster, and has not failed or failed over. The node is simply not accepting client connections with VMM client. To fix this, we have to restart the VMM service on the active node, or failover which is essentially the same.

We don't get any errors pointing to VMM no longer accepting connections. As stated, the service keeps running. Doesn't crash with nice event-log entries to help pin-point the issue.

Anyone had this happening before ? I'm almost at a total loss.

Tried a lot of things already. New VMM nodes in VMM cluster, threw away the old nodes, check permissions, disabled nightly backup, windows updated up until sept 2018, and 20 more other things.

Greetings

Richard

Run a Powershell script Post-Deploy using VM Template

We are using SCVMM 2012 R2 and need to run a PowerShell script post-install that adds users to the local admins group.  Is this possible when using VM templates to deploy VMs? I looked into the application scripts, but they appear to require VM services?

Compliace Scan Results In Error 24021 0x80240439

I am running SCVMM 2016 with 2016 hosts.  I ran a compliance scan on a host and it showed what I expected, out of compliance.  I had SCVMM remediate the updates and the results was completed with info.  It showed Error (24021) Compliance scan of AgentServer server.domain.local succeeded with warning: --0x80240439.  I retried scanning again but the same message.  I tried rebooting both the host and the WSUS server again, but the issue persists.  I found the following errors in the Windows Update log.

2018/09/25 10:19:39.0377850 1884 8564 WebServices WS error: There was an error communicating with the endpoint at 'http://wsus.domain.local:8530/ClientWebService/client.asmx'.
2018/09/25 10:19:39.0377865 1884 8564 WebServices WS error: The server returned HTTP status code '413 (0x19D)' with text 'Request Entity Too Large'.
2018/09/25 10:19:39.0377875 1884 8564 WebServices WS error: The response from the HTTP server was not recognized.
2018/09/25 10:19:39.0377896 1884 8564 WebServices Web service call failed with hr = 80240439.

I increased the UploadReadAheadSize by adding a 1 to the end of it.  I increased app pool memory to 4 GB.  I did an IISReset but received the same message.  I also tried to reboot the WSUS server but I am still getting the same message.  I also tried to do a WSUS cleanup.

I was curious if anyone else would be able to offer any further assistance.  I haven't been able to find much more to help/try.

Hello,

I am interested in creating something like :

https://labondemand.com/Event/MsHandsOnLabs/Home

Can some give me some hints/support on how to do this?
( Having templates and running multiple instances of the same time, maybe reusing the VM`s in multiple Labs)

Thank you

VMM Client Error (2912)

Hi Everyone,

I am hoping for a little advise on an generic issue I am having on mutable Hyper-V hosts within vmm. I have around 20 servers that are reporting the following error when trying to do a refresh or reinstall.

-----------------------------

Error (2912)
An internal error has occurred trying to contact the '***' server: : .

WinRM: URL: [http://***:5985], Verb: [INVOKE], Method: [GetVersion], Resource: [http://schemas.microsoft.com/wbem/wsman/1/wmi/root/scvmm/AgentManagement]

The request is not supported (0x80070032)

Recommended Action
Check that WS-Management service is installed and running on server '***'. For more information use the command "winrm helpmsg hresult". If '***' is a host/library/update server or a PXE server role then ensure that VMM agent is installed and running. Refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2742275 for more details.

---------------

Actions / Checks I have tried so far :

1. Reinstalled client. This results in the same issue.

2. ensured all systems ( including the vmm server are on the latest updates and VMM version )

3. Reset performance counters

4. Checked WinRM was configured on remote boxes

5. Firewalls is off on both ends

6. No proxy configuration in place.

7. This is effecting 2012 r2 and 2016 servers core and desktop

8. Checked wmi for corruption

9. Increased time outs and max concurrent in WinRM

10. Restarted all related services on client box

11. If I remove and reinstall the Hyper-V server from console I also get the same error when re-adding it.

VM Checkpoint "created by" user is wrong

SCVMM 2016, ver 4.0.2314.0

Hi All,

We have VMs with a Self-Service owner.  When a different user creates a checkpoint on that VM, within the checkpoint properties, it shows that the checkpoint was "created by" the owner, not by the user that actually created it.

Can someone explain this?  Or is there a fix/update/somewhere we can report to MS for this issue?

Thanks,

Chris

SCVMM2016-UR5: MSA2040 SMI Storage - error 26280 / 20406 MM could not enumerate instances of class CIM_RegisteredProfile

Hi,

we use SCVMM 2016 with UR5.

When we would add our MSA2040 Fibre Channel Storage over SMI and SMI-S, we get the Errors:

Error (26280)
Storage discovery of fabric provider san-a.ttcon.local for user manage failed from SCVMM-Server.intdomain.local

Recommended Action
Specify valid provider, port and user credentials for storage discovery.

Error (20406)
VMM could not enumerate instances of class CIM_RegisteredProfile on the server . Failed with error HRESULT 0x80338104 The WS-Management service cannot process the request. The WMI service returned an 'access denied' error.

Recommended Action
Ensure the provider is running, and then try the operation again.

For Tests we disable SMI-S and try to connect, but it don´t helps.
Also we Change the RunAs Account to .\manage with updated Password, but same error.

Can someone helps?

Kind regards Joerg

Permission error on VHDX expand

We're in the process of moving to VMM 2016 from 2012 R2 and I've hit a problem that doesn't appear to make much sense.

The End User roles (Tenant or Self Service) don't appear to be able to make any modifications to an existing VHDX. Trying to expand, convert to a fixed disk, compact etc all fail with a permissions error pasted below. The permissions set 2012 which this works absolutely fine for, I've even tried checking all permissions within a role as a test but it makes no difference. This role can make other changes such as increasing vCPU's or Memory and can even add a second VHDX and set options during creation. Once the disk has been created, we're back to square one and no future modifications will work.

Error (1401)
You do not have the permission required to perform this operation.

Recommended Action
Contact the Virtual Machine Manager administrator to obtain the appropriate permissions. Please contact your system administrator with this error ID.

SCVMM 2016 – Physical adapters are missing from the logical switch

Hello,

I have a problem with the VMM and a fresh new host.

Here is my setup:

  • VMM 2016 UR3 (I know about UR4, but we are not ready to use it in the production). At the same time we have a few 2016 hosts that work well with the current UR
  • Windows 2016 Server with all the updates installed
  • Host hardware: HPE BL460 server with NC532i network adapter (aka BCM57711)
  • NIC driver: 7.12.32.0 by Qlogic Corporation

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Install the fresh Windows 2016 on the host, turn on the “Hyper-V” feature
  2. Install the SC VMM agent from the VMM console
  3. Create a new logical switch:
    1. Add new logical switch (embedded team)
    2. Add physical adapter(s)
    3. Add a few new virtual adapters
    4. Click OK

If you check the “Network connections” on the host, you can notice, that the physical adapter(s) will blink and then lose all its/their properties except “Microsoft LLDP Protocol Driver” and “Hyper-V Extensible Virtual Switch”. The same time all the virtual adapters are created. They work well so everything looks fine except for thing. If I open the host settings in VMM console, I can discover that the virtual switch is not bound to any of the physicals adapters.

If I try to add the adapter again, I’ve got the following error:

Error (25240)

Adding a member to the adapter team <virtual switch name name> failed with error Unable to find Adapter <physical adapter name> in Team after addition

Recommended Action

Ensure the team is functioning correctly and retry the operation.

I've tried to get the information about the switch with the Hyper-V cmdlets.

Here is the host that looks fine in VMM:

And this is host that doesn't work:

It looks the same for me...

Can SCVMM 2012 manage Hosts\VMs in different domains

$

We have three domains. We'll call them Domain_A, Domain_B and Domain_C. On DOMAIN_A I'm currently managing about 250 VM's on different Hosts and Host Clusters. We have two other domains, Domain_B and Domain_C that are in the DMZ. I'm wondering if we need to have separate SCVMM servers in each domain? My boss would like to have one SCVMM server if possible to manage the Hyper-V environment in all three domains. Could this be done if the network team were able to open up specific ports on the firewall or does something else have to be done in order to make this possible, if at all. If it were possible, would we still have the same capabilities as if everything were on the same domain? Any extra information or technical articles on how to accomplish this would be great. Thanks

S2D and DCB Configurations

$

I have been building out some S2D clusters that are not managed by VMM. Pretty much everything is done via PowerShell. I have no issues with S2D deployments via PowerShell. However, I have some questions on some of the steps to deploy a S2D cluster using VMM.

First, when you deploy the S2D cluster in VMM, there is no way to pass to VMM the Friendly Name of the Storage Pool it creates.  Not a big issue but would be nice to have that available in the GUI.  Very easily done via PowerShell when creating the clusters.

Second, in VMM when created the SET Switch the first Network Adapter always takes the name of the Switch.  The vNetwork name is correct but the network adapter name it creates isn't.  Not a big thing unless you have been use to deploying these clusters via PowerShell.  (This may be a User Issue)

Third,  this one seems to be the big one for me.  When VMM creates the S2D cluster, it doesn't configure any of the Data Center Bridging requirements. It also doesn't give you the option to enable RDMA on those Nics as well.  However, for the RDMA part, we can fix that with a Port Profile.  The big one is creating the Network QoS policy for SMB-Direct and applying that policy along with the bandwidth percentage.

Is there a way to do this from within VMM that I am unaware?  Or just keep doing it through PowerShell after the cluster has been created?  As with setting Jumbo Packet sizes.. this will be done as a PowerShell task as well.

OS Profile take a long time to be populated with an answer file at a second site library

Hi!

I have two connected Hyper-v Datacenters with SOFS servers as a storage solution, the Datacenters are in different cities and replicate normally. I use SC VMM 2016 to manage them. I have two management servers in each site, the management server at the second site is a Library server at VMM also.

When i create a new VM from a template, it takes 4-5 minutes to populate an OS profile with value from answer file (which is an XML file at the mgmt server's library). while it takes to second if i use an answer file from a vmm server's library.

Is there any reason to that?

I have checked all the user permissions and everything is the same for both library folders!

Thanks in advanced for your help

VMM2016 can't build new VM

$

Hi,

I am running VMM 2016 and HyperV Core 2016 and it used to function fine when building new VMs, now it fails each time with the following error:

Error (20408)

VMM could not get the specified instance Scvmm_EthernetSwitchPortInternalSettingData.InstanceID="Microsoft:Definition\1f59a509-a6ba-4aba-8504-b29d542d44bb\Default" of class Scvmm_EthernetSwitchPortInternalSettingData on the server xxx.xxx.xx.xxx.co.uk. The operation failed with error HRESULT 0x80338000 The WS-Management service cannot process the request. The class Scvmm_EthernetSwitchPortInternalSettingData does not exist in the root/virtualization/v2 namespace.

However, if I use HyperV manager then I can build the VMs OK and VMM2016 will then allow control of most functions, my othe rHyper-V Core 2016 servers running under the same VMM2016 instance are working just fine.

Can anyone shed some light on this please?

SCVMM 2012 R2 Migration

$

So, I am looking to migrate our instance of SCVMM 2012 R2 to SCVMM 1801 on a new Server 2016 server. I have read that the migration should be relatively simple when it comes to backing up the database and restoring it to the new instance of SCVMM but my most important question is whether the commands that it uses to pull information will be the same and just need to be updated or not.

I know that these two talk and from what I read I should just have to change the connection name once everything is migrated over, is this correct? I do not have to transfer any VMs over either as the instance it is currently on will just become a new host (as will another server).

Any assistance or best practices would be helpful!

Hi,

I cannot remove file share from some hosts but I cannot understand why.

The "Remove" button from Hosts->Properties->Storage->File Shares is grey, only from one host I removed.

Could you help me?
