Dear Experts,

I need your advice to Move VMs from a Hyper-V Server to SCVMM managed Hyper-V Host. Fact is I have deployed SCVMM and I need to transfer all the VMs from my old system. I am trying to move my VMs from Hyper-V manager and its transferring all the files and at the end of transfer it fails.

Please let me know what is the exact process to transfer VMs from a Hyper-V host which is not managed by VMM to a VMM managed Hyper-V host.

Notice that my Windows Server 2012 r2 is running on old Hyper-V hosts and Server 2016 are running on VMM Managed Hosts

Thanks and Best Regards

problems moving virtual machines inside of cluster

Even though I have made no changes to my environment, other than normal OS patches, I unable to move my vm's between host servers.  This is true for host server that are part of a cluster and those that are not.  When I attempt to do this inside of VMM, I get a error message stating that "CLR is not terminating". Research I am finding points to .Net Framework 4.5 not being installed.  I have not found any more recent for Windows Server 2016 and this error.  Other article talk about different circumstances when the problem occurs.  I only see this attempt to move VM's between hosts.  Also when using Hyper-V Manager  and attempting to move between hosts I receive: "Virtual machine migration operation failed at migration source. Failed to establish a connection with host: '*': no credentials are available in the security package. The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to authenticate the connection for a Virtual Machine migration at the source host."  For all my hosts authentication is configured to use Kerberos and NOT CredSSP.

Please keep in mind, this was working as configured for most of this year.  I have not changed the RunAs account in VMM for this operation, it is enabled, active, and there are no problems with the password.

Any help helping to location more information about this problem or how to resolve would be greatly appreciated.

I want to ask how can I dismount a VHD which the VHD file is no more existed?

So I have a VHD set by ImDisk RamDriver, for some reason I forgot to unmount this VHD with the VHD file not exist now, and I can't unmount it right now with any ways such as Dismount in powershell or detach in diskpart cli or detach in disk manager, they will all show me "Device is not ready". Do I have another way to dismount this VHD?

Run a Powershell script Post-Deploy using VM Template

We are using SCVMM 2012 R2 and need to run a PowerShell script post-install that adds users to the local admins group.  Is this possible when using VM templates to deploy VMs? I looked into the application scripts, but they appear to require VM services?

Unable to migrate VM to cluster storage (storage spaces direct)

Hello

When I try to migrate VM that resides on an old host (windows 2016) to our new windows 2019 cluster vmm dont see the cluster shared volumes as an volume to migrate to. It wants to use the c:\

I get this error

"There is not enough disk space on the available volumes.
Maximum disk space on the most appropriate volume, accounting for the host resource utilization  (in megabytes): 112084
The virtual machine requirement (in megabytes): 327495
The maximum available space at the time of evaluation, after considering the virtual machine requirements (in megabytes): 112084"

The strange this is if i Migrate one VM that is less then 112gig it works and I can then in the migrate process choose cluster storage..

Im running vm2019 and the cluster volumes is set as available for placement.

Anyone knows how to do?

VMM PXE Provider does not appear to be working when booted from UEFI mode over Ipv6

When the deployment happens through IPv4, its booting from “DCMgr\boot\windows\bootmgfw.efi” .
But in case of IPv6 it’s trying boot from “boot\x64\wdsmgfw.efi” is there something I am missing here? My DHCP server is configured on different server and WDS SCVMM is configured on the different server.
Everything is working fine when the deployment happens from IpV4. is this the correct behavior or are we missing any configuration??

We are running VMM 2016 and have a job that appears to be hung up. The job is 'Update Library' and nothing I have tried seems to have any effect on it.

1. Tried to manually stop with powershell. Said the job was unable to be canceled and to wait for it to finish

2. Right clicking it yields no options

3. Tried restarting the vmm service to no impact

4. Tried deleting the library got an error saying there was a job running against it to wait for it to finish

After upgrading to SCVMM 2019 all Windows 10 VMs has operating system unknown

Hi,

We upgraded to SCVMM 2019, ADK/WinPE to 1809. Server is still on 2016 so is SQL.
After the upgrade all Windows 10 VMs we have shows Operating System unknown. We then set them manually to x64 Windows 10 all looks good. However when the VM refreshes it reverts to Unknown operating system.

Anyone seen this or have an idea of what the problem can be?
Cant see anything in the logs that might relate to this.

How to reinstall VMM HA node

Hi.

I need to reinstall OS on one of the nodes in VMM HA config. Is there a documented procedure how to do this? I need to reuse the original/current computer name.

Do I just reinstall the OS and run the VMM install - add node wizard? Will that work when the records are already in the VMM database and AD? Do I need to run some cleanup prior to reinstalling VMM? Etc.

Thanks in advance, I haven't found any information regarding this.

Registering Providers and File Servers

Hi,

Currently I have a VMM 2016 server.  It has (for example) SOFS1 as a Registered Scale-Out File Server with some File Shares.

I have a newly built VMM 2019 server.  Can I register SOFS1 on the new VMM 2019 server, whilst still having it registered on VMM 2016?

Thanks in advance.

Not able to delegate permission to enable nested virtualization in SCVMM 2019

Enabling nested virtualization from VMM is a great feature we have been waiting a long time for.

Sadly, when delegating permission to our self-service users to enable nested virtualization it's not working.
Not even the new VM Administrator role can do it. Seems fabric administrator is required...

Tried both console and PS.

Shame to have implement this nice feature and then forget about the delegation parts...

Generation 2 VM boot order multiple entries

I deployed a number of machines on SCVMM 2012 R2 and they boot via an attached ISO which then stream a Citrix PVS vDisk. When the machines are deployed, the don't have an entry in this format: File > bootmgfw.efi. After the first boot this entry is added to the machine and is put as first in the list. I noticed lately that now some machines have 3-4 entries like this, most probably generated after I updated the Citrix vDisk. My question is what trigger SCVMM or Hyper-V to add these entries ? What can i do to avoid having them, because it seems the number grows and then at some stage I need to clean this up. And also every time a new one is added is always at the top of the list. And also where this is list is maintained ? Is in SCVMM itsellf or is in the Diskc (C drive) ?

SCVMM 2019 SDN deployment

Hi,

I have questions with regard to deployment of SDN 2019 in SCVMM 2019.

a. For SCVMM 2019 deployment of SDN, does it still require the 3 networks namely Management, HNV and transit as before? Github templates is still using the old templates. Not sure whether it is still valid.

b. If SDNExpress 2019 is deploy first and then SCVMM 2019 is installed, is it able to manage SDN? Notice that SDNExpress 2019 only use Management and HNV network.

Thanks

Available Memory and CPU Average stats are wrong

$

I have a few hosts in a Cluster that always seem to report 0KB Memory free and the CPU average as 255%.

The two anomalies don't always go hand in hand, for example in a single 8 node cluster I have 4 of the 8 showing 255% CPU but only 3 appear to be reporting incorrect Memory. I haven't observed it enough to be 100% sure but I don't believe it's always the same hosts showing these problems.

It doesn't appear to be affecting the cluster in any way, they appear as balanced as I'd expect them to be. I've just <g class="gr_ gr_499 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" data-gr-id="499" id="499">ran</g> a fresh job and looked at the host status within properties and they all appear to look good.

We have a separate 3rd party that also monitors infrastructure and this reports things like CPU and Memory correctly so this appears specific to the way SCVMM gets the data rather than a generic host issue.

SQL Recommendations

Hi,

I understand that Single SQL or SQL Cluster for all System Center products (CM, OM, VMM, O, SM, etc.) is not recommended although supported.  I have following questions regarding the issue?

1.  Is it really supported?  If not, can I have a link to microsoft documentation so that I can show as an evidence to convince one of my customers?

2.  If it is supported, what potential issues I can run into? Performance, Compatibility, etc.

3.  Is it really practical to do that even if it is a small environment? Especially keeping OM and SM's Datawarehouse and OM's ACS Databases in mind?

4.  What would be recommended in this scenario of small environment? Localized SQL for better performance and quicker recovery time?

5.  I could not find any collocation matrices for system center products on technet.  Before I remember they were used to be there.  Any link with respect to that would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Minimum Servers / Collocation

Hi,

1.  What are the minimum number of servers required to implement an SCVMM Solution (All Roles)?

2.  What server roles can be collocated on the same server?

Thanks in advance.

Running Two-2 VMM Servers in HQ/DR Scenario

$

Hi,

WARNING:  COULD BE THE MOST STUPID QUESTION YOU MIGHT HAVE EVER READ!

SCENARIO:  Consider Two-2 Sites (HQ and DR).  Both HQ and DR are running same Applications, but only HQ Applications are ACTIVE and in use.  In case of disaster, BACKUP is RESTORED on the DR Site Applications and they become ACTIVE for users until fallback happens to HQ Site.  HQ Site has it's own SCVMM Server managing HQ Site Applications and DR Site has it's own SCVMM Server that is managing DR Site Applications.  Both SCVMM are joined with same AD Domain.

1.  Is this good design?

2.  Can we face any issues with this strategy?

3.  SCVMM has a DR mechanism of Backup/Restore.  Should we be following that or for our environment, we can manage it through this method as well.

4.  Is this even possible in the same AD Domain?

5.  Thoughts on the strategy?

Thanks in advance.
