SCVMM 2008 R2 Convert Physical Machine P2V and Network Considerations

$

Currently running, but not for long as going to SCVMM 2012, a 2008 R2 SCVMM environment.  We have Virtual Machine Manager installed at our Los Angeles HQ and it manages 4 sites.  Our East Coast Site has a physical machine that we need to perform a P2V to its local HPV Cluster Host but I'm concerned the bits travel over the network between Los Angeles SCVMM system and our East Coast cluster as the P2V occurs.  Its a pretty sizable system so this would be a disaster if this occurred.

I'm hoping that the SCVMM system only issues control commands between the Physical and the Local HPV system and thus the P2V data transfer happens within the local network loop.

Can someone let me know which is the case?

Thanks

Cannot Add users or groups to System Center 2012 R2 App Controller

Hi,

I am unable to add a user or group to an App Controller user role as I get the following error:

The user or group name is not valid please enter a user or group name in the format "domain\name"

Our NETBIOS domain name has an underscore in it (DOMAIN_LOCAL) which looks to be the problem (domain created before my time).

Is there any workaround for this issue?

Thanks,

Hi Everyone,

Here is my issue.

I have Lab, with SCVMM2012R2, clustered of Hyper-v hosts, VMM server also works as storage (CIFS and iSCSI) and managed via VMM just fine.

I'm trying to add second storage, also built on Win2012R2, but only difference is new server is not part of domain, and i use local account (Ran as) for this server.

Local account is in Admins on remote server, but i'm still getting Error (406).

Error (406)
Access has been denied while contacting the computer..... Recommended Action
1. Verify that the specified user account has administrative privileges on x.x.x.x.
2. Verify that DCOM access, launch, and activation permissions are enabled on x.x.x.x for the Administrators group. Use dcomcnfg.exe to modify permissions, and then try the operation again.

Any help appreciative.

VMM 2012 R2 Error 26857

Hello Everyone,

I have VMM 2012 R2 configured and All the Hyper-v host Added to Fail-Over Cluster.

Most of the VMs are tag the VLAN ID and few of the VMs are without VLAN Tag. I have configured the Dynamic Optimization.

Every 10 minutesDynamic Optimization running and base on the load on the host VMs are moving to different host.

Problem is Vlan Tag VMs are not live migration different host While running the Dynamic Optimization. Rest of the VMs (with out vlan id )are moving  to different host.

Vlan Tag VMs are live migrating through Fail-over cluster and Through normal VMM live migration.

While running the Dynamic Optimization job VMs i'm getting below errors on VMM job.

Error (26857)

The VLAN ID (532) is not valid because the VM network (INTERNAL) does not include the VLAN ID in a network site accessible by the host.

Recommended Action

Either specify a valid VLAN ID, or do not specify a VLAN ID and a valid one will be assigned automatically.

Any one have any idea please let me know.

Configure Live Migration Multi-channel with SW QoS

$

I'm a bit confused about what is needed to properly configure Live Migration using SMB multi-channel with QoS, using a SCVMM logical switch. Where I'm confused, coming from a VMware background, is how many and what type of vNICs that I need. I'm thinking I need two of some virtual NIC type, each with a unique IP address, which SMB multi-channel for LM would use. I would then somehow tie a SW QoS policy to the vNICs to ensure LM traffic doesn't stomp all over other network traffic types.

Any explanations would be most welcomed.

Windows Azure Pack - Server returned HTTP response code: 500 error while accessing the public tenant API

Hi,

We are facing the following error while trying to access the given Windows Azure Pack Public tenant API to query the virtual machines list along with network adaper details -

java.io.IOException: Server returned HTTP response code: 500 for URL: https://<hostname>:30006/<subscription-id>/services/systemcenter/vmm/VirtualMachines?$expand=VirtualNetworkAdapters&$top=10000&$skip=0

The response is proper when we access the following URL -

https://<hostname>:30006/<subscription-id>/services/systemcenter/vmm/VirtualMachines

Only on adding the $expand=VirtualNetworkAdapters, url parameter we are getting the above error.

Where can we check for the error logs on the Azure Pack server ? We checked for the logs using Windows Event Viewer but did not find any for the public tenant API.

What should be the cause for such an error and how can we fix this to get the proper data?

Thanks in advance.

Turning off VM in guest does not update status in VMM 2012 R2 Update Rollup 2 console

I am seeing an issue with a few VMs where if you turn the VM off from within the guest OS, the status does not change in the VMM console.

Details about the environment:

  • Six node cluster running Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Core
  • Cluster validate completed successfully.  Only warnings due to some VMs being offline
  • Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2 with UR2
  • 251 VMs in cluster used for Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp

I've read a few articles similar to this one that refer to a change in the VM Light Refresher schedule from RTM to SP1.  (http://blogs.technet.com/b/chengw/archive/2012/09/17/update-on-vmm-refreshers-what-has-changed-and-what-this-means-to-you.aspx).  Basically it looks like the light VM refresher was turned off and now we depend upon WMI if the environment support WCF 3.0.

Does this mean that we're looking at the WMI on the Host or the Guest?  Or, is it possible that I just have WMI corruption in a few guest VMs?

If I want to turn it back on, it seems like I should be able to create a registry DWORD key in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager\Settings called VMPropertiesUpdateInterval and set the value.  Does this seem plausible?  Would it be supported?

Need to clear Duplicate Virtual Machines from VMM with incorrect statuses

Over the past couple of weeks we had a couple of power outages that knocked out our R&D cluster. When the cluster was restored Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2 showed duplicates of various different machines that had no owner. We know not to delete the duplicates as it's been proven that deleting the duplicates actually deletes the VM it references.

The statuses very from missing, incomplete vm configuration, update failed , and unsupported cluster configuration. Most of these have Owner "Unknown".

We've used this in the past to remove the missing duplicate VMs from the database http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff641854.aspx.

So I was wondering if anyone knew of a way I could remove these other duplicates, through a similar process as described in the link above or any other way.

Failing to add read-only library share to cloud for a library share in a managed NetApp vserver

We have a NetApp Data ONTAP cluster mode added as a storage provider within SCVMM. We created a vserver with a file share that is managed by SCVMM. We then right clicked on the Library server and added that share as a managed Library share. When we go to a cloud's properties and add that share as a read-only library share for the cloud, the job fails and gives this error.

VMM02 is our Library Server in SCVMM, FS02 is the NetApp vserver with a file share of vmmlibrary. We can use any files in the share for templates and such, we just can't associate it to a cloud.

We followed the first part of this article for the NetApp share part, https://communities.netapp.com/community/netapp-blogs/msenviro/blog/2014/02/21/leverage-scvmm-2012-r2-offload-data-transfer-odx-for-vm-provisioning-using-data-ontap-smi-s-agent-51

Error (24338)
Path \\fs02.ourdomain.com\vmmlibrary\ is not on a library share that is managed by VMM Server.

Provide a path on a library share.

SCVMM Service Template to Remote Cluster

Hi,

We have an SCVMM 2012 R2 Implementation with 2012 R2 Hyper V Clusters, across data center's worldwide.

Deployments of VMs work extremely well utilising local libraries in each hyper v cluster with Equivalent Library Objects.

However during Service Template deployments a WAN based BITS file copy occurs of the vmguestagent.iso which is about 130 MB in size, upon investigation this file exists, in the bin directory of the scvmm server.

What we need to do is be able to deploy this file from the local region library server and not the scvmm server.

Has anyone seen this before or have any idea's on how we can prevent SCVMM sending this file across the WAN.

Chris

One HV host in Host Group can see SAS array and other one cannot

Hi Everyone,

I am new to VMM and block storage so please forgive me.  I am trying to set up a 2 node cluster with a p2000 SAS array.  I was able to provision the p2000 from VMM but can only see it from the one host.  So when I go in to the properties of host1, i see my P2000 under the SAS arrays but when I do the same for host2, I do not.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Tony

Bandwitdh/Latency between VMM server and Hyper-V host

$

Hi,
We're testing VMM and Hyper-V in a scenario where the connection between VMM and the Hyper-V servers it manages may vary in quality (this is an Offshore/Vessel scenario using VSAT links).

I haven't been able to find any info regarding this in the supported configurations section of the documentation, but I'm sure it's there somewhere.

Right now, we're testing managed hosts that have about 6-700ms of response time when pinging the host from the VMM server. There is no ping fail, it's just slow. In any case, VMM Status for the host reports "Critical" on the "Network" health, stating that the host cannot be reached through ping (although it can, it's just slow).

So, what is VMM's upper limit response time when it decides to put the host into "Critical"? Is there any way to tune this? We're just using VMM to keep an eye on hosts and VMs on these boxes - deploying vms etc is out of the picture.

assign management ip address with SCVMM 2012 R2 for hyper-v converged network?

$

Hi,

I am setting up a converged network for our Hyper-V clusters using vNICs for the different network traffic including management, live migration, cluster-csv, hyper-v etc.

Problem is, how do I assign the hyper-v hosts a management IP address? They need a network connection on the management network for scvmm to manage them in the first place. How do I take the existing management IP address that is directly assigned to the host and transfer it directly to the new vNIC so scvmm has management of it? Kind of in a chicken and egg situation here. I thought about assigning a temp ip address to the host initially but am worried that assigning the address will cause problems as then the host would then have 2 default gateways configured. How have others managed this scenario?

Thanks

Parent disks not placed according to specified placement paths

$

We are using differencing disks for our RDP servers (basically VDI deployment). We have a three-node Hyper-V cluster utilizing SOFS cluster for VHDX storage. We have a service template that deploys the service. We are using VMM 2012 R2 with update rollup 2 (yes, we applied the SQL script after upgrading).

We create a new VHDX template about once a month (to incorporate patches into the build), which means that new services are created, and the parent disk gets copied from the templates into the parent location, and then new machines create their differencing disks from that parent.

It has been working splendidly for about six months, until last week when we attempted to deploy the latest VHDX and a new service that relies on it.

Even though each host in our cluster has a single "default parent disk path to be used for the virtual machines" configured to the SOFS share where we have our parent disks stored, the parent disk gets copied to a different share all together.

The place where the parent VHDX is going is in our list of available storage, but not in the "default parent disk path".

The share where it should be going has plenty of storage (200GB free) for the VHDX file (11GB). The hosts have access to the share, and it shows as OK in the VMM console.

Why is VMM choosing something other than what we specify? Why would it change this month, when it has been working fine for six months prior?

Script to remove Network Adapter from Virtual Machine Managed VM

$

We're using VMM 2012 and have a 5 Node cluster (running on Win 2008) of around 600 VM's.

We have around 135 VM's which were being used for a project that is winding down.  We're being asked to turn these VM's off but not delete them yet.  The requests to turn off all 135 VM's will be staggered over time so each week we'll need to work on this task as the requests come in.

I need to create a script whereby we can read an input (txt) file of VM names.  The script will turn off the virtual machine then it will remove the network adapter from VMM for that VM.

I've been researching the commands necessary for this script but I'm hesitant to run it for fear I may impact other VM's in our cluster.  I'm thinking I need to use something like the following command:

$VM = Get-SCVirtualMachine -Name "VM03"PS C:\> $Adapter = Get-SCVirtualNetworkAdapter -VM $VMPS C:\> Remove-SCVirtualNetworkAdapter -VirtualNetworkAdapter $Adapter

Is this the right command to use?

How would I use this in a script and read in a list of VM's from a txt file?

Deploying OVA template

Hi all,

I have been trying to deploy an OVA/OVF template VM into Hyper-V environment. I have a 2012 SP1 beta version of VMM installed.

I am trying to follow the procedure below to import OVF tool.

http://technet.microsoft.com/library/jj158932.aspx

Now, I am getting the following error while I try to add the OVFtoolsnapin.

PS C:\Users\administrator.VBUAQP3> Add-PSSnapin OVFToolSnapIn

Can anyone help me in figuring out the issue. I have followed the rest of the procedure accurately.

Thanks.

TotalVHDCapacity attribute is returning zero in "Get-SCVMTemplate | select Name, TotalVhdCapacity" powershell command though the Vhd capacity is 20 gb in size, vmm 2012 r2

Hi All,

TotalVHDCapacity attribute is returning zero in "Get-SCVMTemplate | select Name, TotalVhdCapacity" powershell command though the template has Vhd capacity is 20 gb in size, vmm 2012 r2. I can create VM using this template too.

For other templates it is returning correct value though.

Can anyone help us understanding the root cause and the solution too.

Thanks in advance.

Can't choose VM subnet in template deployment

$

When we create a VM Template we use a configurable service setting(See image below) for the VM network, so that when a user deploys the template or service to their assigned network they can choose the correct network for the VM. Only problem is, is that they can not choose the VM subnet, and upon deploying it errors out with the following error. How do you work with this type of scenario without creating a VM template per VM Network?

Error (25166)
The VM subnet specified was not found in the VM network (Net32).

Recommended Action
Specify a VM subnet that belongs to the requested VM network and then retry the operation.

Connecting to SCVMM remotely via install on workstation cannot run console windows to VMs (locally on scvmm it works)

We recently installed a SCVMM 2012 machine and connected it to a few HyperV2012 hosts.

From the SCVMM console locally on the machine it is installed on, I can connect to the Console of the VMs on the remote HyperV machines.  However for some reason when I run it remotely from my workstation, I can connect to SCVMM just fine, but connecting to the console of the VMs gives me the error:

Virtual Machine Manager lost the connection to the virtual machine for one of the following reasons:
Another connection was established to the console of this manchine.
The virtual machine has been shut down or put into the saved state.
The user credentials do not have the necessary privilege to connect.
0x0003, 0x0000

The firewall is not detecting any dropped packets (I enabled logging) and I am logging in with the same user as I do locally to the SCVMM server, so it is not permissions.

Any advice would be extremely helpful.  Thanks,

Nicholas

Compliance scan fails

I have SCVMM 2012 R2 running on Windows Server 2012 R2; the host servers are 2012 R2 as well.  I have established a baseline and done compliance scans without issue in the past.  However, I have now added additional items into the baseline and now, after a long timeout period, get the following when I try to do a compliance scan on any host.

Error (2931)
VMM is unable to complete the request. The connection to the VMM agent on the virtualization server (host.domain.com) was lost.
Unknown error (0x80338029)

Recommended Action
Ensure that the Windows Remote Management (WS-Management) service and the VMM agent are installed and running and that a firewall is not blocking HTTPS traffic.

This can also happen due to DNS issues. Try and see if the server (host.domain.com) is reachable over the network and can be looked up in DNS. You can ping the virtualization server from VMM management server and make sure that the IP address returned matches the IP address locally obtained from the virtualization server.

If the error still persists, restart the virtualization server, and then try the operation again.

The firewall is disabled on the SCVMM server and the host servers.  I have verified there are no DNS issues and that WS-Management is running.  I have rebooted all servers.  I have even removed the baseline and created an entirely new baseline, but always get the same error.  Anyone seen this issue?
