Service Management Portal / Azure Pack: Can't connect to VM Console

Hello, I've got a strange problem with the new 2012 R2 Azure Pack & Service Provider Foundation for SC VMM 2012 R2. On the Service Management Portal, I can create Plans, Users and Abonnements without problem and I also can access the Tenant-Portal with the Users I created. There I can create, Start/Stop and delete VMs, but there is one thing I can't do: Connect to the machines via Console or RDP. No matter from which Server/Client, or with which Browser and security settings, its not working.

While using Internet Explorer, after clicking on connect simply nothing happens. When I use Firefox or Chrome, following Errormessage is displayed: "Error downloading the Remote Desktop File for the virtual Computer: [Name]" (crudely translated from german).

This happens with Linux and Windows VMs.

On the Azure Pack Server, the following message is logged every time I try to connect:

Hi,

I'm unable to Live Mirgate a VM from one Cluster to another when VM is on a CifsShare. I get either Error 12700:

VMM CustomProperties Query

Greetings. In VMM you can create your own custom properties variable. Let's say I created one named 'Chargeback'. After that I populate this field with a "Y" or "N" for every virtual machine. Anybody know of a quick powershell script that allows me to create a list of all VMs in VMM that have the Chargeback custom property set to "Y"? Any feedback appreciated.

VMM and WAP - performance issues with subscription sync

$

0
We have WAP deployment with 800+ subscriptions. It's public cloud, all tenants subscribed to one plan. This plan have 60 templates and 16 hardware profiles allowed.

We're experiencing performance issues with subscription sync - when we change anything in plan or new tenant subscribed.

First of all, subcriptions synchronized sequentially, not parallel. One sync ("Change properties of user role" job in VMM) takes ~1.5min. So full synchonization process of 800 subscriptions will take ~1day, which is totally unacceptable.

And second and more serious problem. Subscription sync process causes large CPU and network load for VMM and VMM DB. Network can be loaded up to 300Mbps (send+receive) on VMM and DB when only one subscription synchronizing. Oh, our VMM cluster nodes have 8CPU and 16GB memory, and 12CPU-32GB for DB nodes.

As I understand, the problem is related to large read-write operations in TR_Task*, TR_Subtasks* tables in VMM DB.

Screenshot from VMM jobs:

That's how it looks in the SQL Profiler at the same time:

It's filtered by only one of calls, of course there are other calls. (updates to Tasks for example)

And screenshot from SQL Studio:

In this query first "SubtaskParamsXml" have ~12MB of data and ~200KB in other rows. So one procedure call causes ~25MB transfer.
This procedure called for each subtask update twice ~= 160 calls. Totally we have ~4GB data transfer for just one subscription sync (!). And all this data processed by VMM and DB...

I hope for some workaround or fix.

NVGRE - Policy refresh failed with error

$

We have lot of NVGRE gateway clusters in our environment - currently 15 with 50 networks on each.

In VMM job "Update the Hyper-V Network Virtualization Policy" always ends with error like this:

Warning (50074)

Policy refresh failed with error: nvgrevmcluster10 Execution of Microsoft.SystemCenter.NetworkService::UpdateCustomerAddressRecord on the configuration provider 4ee559f1-f479-480c-9458-d14b8b1c1779 failed. Detailed exception: Microsoft.VirtualManager.Utils.CarmineException: Policy refresh failed with error: The HyperV network virtualization policy update failed on gateway host (nvgrehost1.domain). DetailedErrorMessage (The WS-Management service cannot complete the operation within the time specified in OperationTimeout.).

If the error repeats and the server is responding, adjust GatewayPolicyUpdateTimeout registry value and try the operation again.

I noticed that "nvgrehost1.domain" points to currently passive host, but not sure is it always like this. But I'm sure that any failed job in VMM is abnormal :)

I can't find reasons and misconfigurations that can cause this error. Any suggestions?

SCVMM and Untangle

$

Has anyone set up the Untangle firewall in a Hyper-V guest with SCVMM and multiple tenants behind the untangle?

I am pretty sure I broke my brain trying to get this to work.
The idea is to replace 8 physical routers in a datacenter rack that are functioning as individual gateways for each tenant with one Hyper-V host and multiple untangle installs.
One untangle install can handle up to 3 tenants due to the 7 nic limit on untangle and needing wan/lan interfaces for each.
Hardware is beefy on the host and I have as many physical NICs as I need to make this work but I am trying to get it done with 2 teamed nics for wan and lan (total of 4 and one for management).
It is not a high traffic rack and this should be enough physical bandwidth.
Thoughts?
Ideas?
Any input would be appreciated.

The real IPs have been changed to protect the innocent.

Public IP block
68.15.44.x/24

Tenant-1 LAN - 192.168.5.0/24 (vlan10)
Tenant-1 WAN - 68.15.44.112 (vlan5)

Tenant-2 LAN - 192.168.20.0/24 (vlan11)
Tenant-2 WAN - 68.15.44.113 (vlan5)

ETC
ETC
ETC

The main issues I am having a hard time wrapping my head around - how many virtual networks do I need to create for each tenant? Do they need to be attached to logical switches with uplink port profiles? Can I use regular virtual switches and just attach them to a nic team?
Keep in mind I want the untangle VMs handling NAT and port forwarding etc and I do not want to use SCVMM to manage the gateway.

Delegate Selected VM Access

Can anyone assist with the following scenario? Now that Azman has been deprecated in Windows Server 2012 R2 I need to find a method to delegate access to a single (already existing) VM. This is in an environment that currently has a single Hyper-V 2012 R2 box running many VM's but I have a requirement to delegate access to just a single VM. Can anyone direct me to additional information for this requirement?

Sizing SMB storage for SCVMM-Hyper-V storage provision

$

Hi,

We are using Netapp SMB 3.0 storage which is natively supported.

We have 2 Hyper-V 16 node cluster and each cluster would need 4 SMB 3.0 shares with each 4TB capacity as listed below.

When we asked the above requirement, the storage team created 8 - 4TB SMB shares on netapp storage and discovered through SMI-S.

But what i understand is the discovered storage is not SMB shares but they are storage pools. Listed below.

As per my understanding, They should have created 2 storage pools. each pool with size of 16TB to satisfy our requirement.

Later create shares of each 4TB. 4 shares for first cluster and 4 shares for second cluster.

When we do that, we can achieve ODX as 4 shares will be from same pool and ODX should function between the 4 shares.

Correct me on this,

Above screenshot shows up 8- 4TB storage pool but should haven been 2 storage pool with each pool being 16TB. and create 4 - 4TB shares fulfilling the requirement of 4 shares per cluster and qualifying ODX function.

When i read this article, the netapp storage is represented as share from storage side, then volume and then create the share to get the ODX working

SCVMM not showing VMs' Performance

Hello All,

We are using SCVMM 2012 R2 with UR5. We're running our production VMs on Hyper-V Hosts Clusters. Some clusters are of WS 2012 Datacenter Hyper-V hosts, and some clusters are of WS 2012 R2 Datacenter Hyper-V hosts.

Issue is that VMM is not reflecting the performance of any of the VMs. Neither the VMs hosted on WS 2012 hosts, nor the VMs hosted on WS 2012 R2 hosts.

Details are as follows:

CPU Average for all of the VMs = 0%

Assigned Memory = 0 KB

Memory Demand = 0 KB

Memory Status = this field is empty

Disk Read/Write Speed = 0 KBps

However, SCVMM is showing the corrent information of hosts (e.g., Average CPU Utilization, Available Memory, Total Memory, CPU Count, etc.)

Please guide and help me.

Thank you in anticipation.

VMM Agent Issue

Hello All..........I recently upgraded my VMM Server 2012 R2 to the last rollup and subsequently updated the Agent on Host Servers as well. On most servers, the agent was updated, but two-2 servers are failing to update the agent.

I have tried following:

1.  I have tried rebooting and pushing agent again. This gives an error in the Console that there is already an agent in place on the Managed Computer which should be removed first before newer agent installation.  So, I manually uninstalled the agent on the Host and tried to push the agent again with the same error.  Couple of things are interesting to note here is that even after uninstall of the VMM Agent, the service remains running on the Host somehow.

2.  I have also tried to manually install agent as well. This give the same error that I get at the Console that I need to remove the old agent before installing new one.  So, I go ahead and do that, but still face the same issue.  And again, the service remains running even after uninstall.  The other thing to note is that even with the older agent version, I could only see one Program in the Software's Installed i.e. VMM DHCP Agent.  Generally, two programs are installed (VMM Agent and VMM DHCP Agent).  And in my case there is only VMM DHCP Agent visible in the Programs and that is the case with both the servers facing issues.  Other servers have both VMM  Agent and VMM DHCP Agent.

So, I am completely stumped how to resolve this?

Can't switch to the Deploy Configuration window

Hello,

I'm brand new to VM Manager Service Templates.

I've created my first Single-server Service Template.

I'm at the Service Templates view. I have a Service Template with an OK status.

I click on the Configure Deployment button.

I can see that there is a window open to configure the deployment, but I can't switch to it.

If I click on the Configure Deployment button again another window apppears to  get created, but I can't switch to it either.

I'm running Rollup 8 of VM Manager Console on a Windows 8.

Anyone understand what I'm talking about? Any ideas what's going on?

VMM Issues

Hello All..............I am facing some issues with my VMM. Would appreciate if someone could address following:

1.  One of the Hyper-V Hosts abruptly powered off due to hardware failure. Some of the VMs made it to other hosts. But, two-2 VMs remained on that particular Host according to VMM Console. The host is dead now.  But, as I did not removed the Host from the Console fearing it might delete the VMs too, VMs show up against that particular host which is dead.  The VMs are functional and can be accessed, but through VMM no operation is possible on them. Now, how to get rid of the dead host as well as Failed Configuration VMs that I see against it?

2.  I often get VMM Library warnings regarding ISOs when I refresh the library.  What do they correspond too? How to get rid of them?

SCVMM 2012 R2, Unable to connect to VM using console from Client.

Hi All,

I am trying to connect to VMs using the console from the SCVMM tool on my PC. This comes up with the error

"Virtual Machine Manager lost the connection to the virtual machine for one of the following reasons: Another connection was established to the console of this machine. The virtual machine has been shut down or put into saved state. The user credentials provided do not have the necessary privilege to connect. (0x0003,0x000)"

I can connect to VMs fine when using the console locally from the SCVMM server. I thought it may be a firewall issue with our PCs --> SCVMM server, so have ensured all the correct ports are open. (Initially 2179 was not open to the hosts)

I googled and found a pagesuggesting run as administrator would help, but it does not.

I am using an account which is a member of an ad group in the administrator role.

Also I found this article (Microsoft KB 2986796), and have tried it to no avail.

This is a new build, with update 6 of SCVMM 2012 R2.

We are running four clusters of hyper-V, and the problem affects VMs on all of them - from all client support PCs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I dont know what I have configured incorrectly!

Thanks.

UserControl parent property is null, developing an AddIn for HyperV SCVMM Client (System Center Virtual Machine Manager)

I am developing an AddIn for SCVMM, It is simple user control with a Grid and few Buttons and text boxes, I am able to successfully host my user control inside of SCVMM.

But I am not able to get a handle to the parent of my user control, I was thinking that .Parent on my control would return me the content control or grid that SCVMM is using to host Addin, but it is just null.

Another interesting thing is that I added a break point to the loaded event of my user control and there the sender is also coming out as null.

Hello everyone,
I have a problem in creating VMs from SCVMM because when I try to create a VM are generates the following errors:

Error 25262: CAN NOT SET bandwidth setting on virtual network adapter for SRIOV switch (Public Network)

Recommended Action: Check the native virtual port profile and correct the issue.

What could be the problem?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Luca

Converting vhdx to fixed from VMM2012R2 has generated a very strange error on vhdx

Hello,

For someone who can help me on this very strange issue:

Our environment: Hyper-V Cluster with hosts running w2012 R2, Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2 to manage virtual environment, SAN storage that provide LUNs where CSVs are stored, and virtual machines running Windows 2008 R2.

Yesterday, a commont task such as converting vhdx to fixed from VMM2012R2, has generated an error on that vhdx that has put it completely unavailable. That are the steps were done:

- with the vm stopped, from VMM i edited the properties of one of the virtual disks connected to that machine, and selected to convert to fixed

- i started the proccess, the job began to do the task and about at 50% of the process the task ended in VMM with the error:

Error (2909) VMM cannot create the file C:\ClusterStorage\VolumeX\....\efpljdkr.vhdx because the file name already exists on the hyfbdst26.dmndst.loc server. Cannot create a file when that file already exists (0x800700B7)

- The VM was unavailable, only with the repair option active. I executed a repair with "ignore" option, and VMM returns the same error.

- In the LUN where de vhdx disk is stored, there was the temp file efpljdkr.vhdx created by VMM

- I deleted the temp file, i tried to repair again the VM with the "ignore" option and the VM became available again, but wen i started it the VM showed an error as the vhdx was inacessible.

The vhdx disk is stored on the lun but actually is unavailable: i have no permission to edit, rename, copy, show security acls, etc... despite of i am domain administrator. I can't view security properties of the file...

if i execute powershell command "Get-Acl name.vhdx" i obtain error: Access is denied.

I can not get ownership of the file. The file is completely isolated from somehow security reasons

Can anyone help me with this strange error please?

Thanks in advance!
