Agent Installation and Behavior of VMs

$

I have just recently installed SCVMM Agents on my Hyper-V Clusters. I have noticed following things which I would like to know more about and whether there is a workaround to that:

1.  When I look at the state of the virtual machines part of the cluster in Failover Cluster Manager, they appear to be normal and working, but when I look into the SCVMM Console, sometimes it shows as stopped and sometimes shows as Host Not Responding and sometimes depicts the correct state.  What could be causing that? SCVMM and Hyper-V Hosts are all on the same network.  Is there a way to fix this?

2.  Some of the machines that I was live migrating easily through Failover Cluster Manager are providing strange options when I am migrating them through SCVMM Console such as when I was moving one of the nodes that is using a shared VHDx and is part of the Guest Cluster, the wizard provided me with an option to store the VHDX on any of the CSVs available.  Why is it asking me so? Is it moving the Storage of the VM along with the Configuration as well?  I get the same option when I live migrate a machine that is part of a Guest Cluster that is using Fiber Adapter and has direct connectivity to the SAN.  Also, machines were highly available when in Failover Cluster Manager, but here both of these Guest Clusters are appearing as not Highly Available.  Why is it so?  How to rectify it.

3.  After the Agent Installation what are the basic configuration settings that must be done.  Any article/blog would be appreciated.

I would love to know about these items.  Thanks in advance.

Virtual Machine deployment speed

Hi,

I'm having some performance issue when deploying a VM template from the VMM library to our cluster.

If I start a deployment, I can see VMM uses the "Fast Copy" method to transfer the VHDX from our library to the cluster storage, but only does it at about 150MB/s

The strange thing is that, if I manually copy the same file to the same location (using windows), I get more than double that speed (360MB/s)

Any ideas why this could be?

Thank you,
Stephane

Refresh Virtual Machine Error

I am getting this error when I click Refresh Virtual Machine on my cluster nodes:

Error (2932)
VMM is unable to complete the request. The connection to the VMM agent on the virtualization server (NODE2) was lost.
The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request (0x800703E3)

Recommended Action
Ensure that the Windows Remote Management (WS-Management) service and the VMM agent are installed and running and that a firewall is not blocking HTTPS

traffic.

This problem can also be caused by antivirus software that is installed in the parent partition of the virtualization server (NODE2) if the real-time

scanning component is configured to monitor the Hyper-V virtual machine files. For more details on how to resolve the issue look into KB 961804,

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/961804.

If the error still persists, restart the server (NODE2), and then try the operation again.

PS:  VMM Agent is running, Firewall is allowing traffic and WS-Management is also running.

Are there any special settings required that I am missing.

Creating availability sets is easy enough:

VM Properties -> Hardware Configuration -> Availability -> Manage availability sets
- then Add/Remove or Create

...but how does one delete or rename an existing availability set?

Multi-Disk SQL Server Service Template

Hi All,

I have a VM Template with multiple disks which I'm planning to use in a service template containing a SQL Profile.

When building a VM from this image, the 2nd & 3rd disks are always offline.  I've created a diskpart script to bring the disks online.  What's the best way to ensure that this script runs prior to the SQL Server customisation being applied?

It's VMM 2012 R2 & the guest OS is Win 2012 R2 with SQL Server 2012SP1

Thanks

Stu

Hyper-v Cluster in SCVMM 2012 R2

Hi all,

I am trying to create a Hyper-v cluster in SCVMM 2012 R2.

What i have done ?

1. Created a ISCSI storage server, target, iscsi disk.

2. Added the ISCSI storage server in scvmm under storage provider, then created a classification & 2 LUN's on this disk.

3. Assigned the storage & the LUN's to the host group.

4. Added the storage in both the host as ISCSI array.

5. Then started building the hyper-V Cluster.

What the problem is ?

When i create the Cluster it always fails & every time it gives me new errors. Literally it fails every time with new error messages. What i wanted to know that is there any step by step tutorial for creating a hyper-v cluster in scvmm which has details about how to prepare the nodes of the cluster(A quick google search returns many such posts but they only describes the process of creation of cluster which is quiet straight forward).

Please Suggest, as i am getting closer to my deadlines.

Thanks,

Pranay.

Adding an app-v package to SCVMM 2012 R2

Hi,

I sequenced an application with App-v Sequencer 5.0 SP1. I don't have an app-v infrastructure (Server, Streaming ...). When the application is sequenced, I have the following files:

  • Report.xml
  • Application_Name.appv
  • Application_Name.msi
  • Application_Name_DeploymentConfig.xml
  • Application_Name_UserConfig.xml

I created a folder in my VMM Library with all these files. When a refresh of the library is done, I only have these files:

  • Report.xml
  • Application_Name_DeploymentConfig.xml
  • Application_Name_UserConfig.xml

If I well understand, only .OSD files are supported for App-v packages in VMM library. So I would like to know how to add my app-v package and deploy it from VMM with an application profile please.

Thank you for help.

Missing tabs from VM template properties in VMM 2012 SP1

$

One of the VM templates stored in a library had a few properties modified (Numlock, RAM, processor count) and after saving those changes, there are several tabs missing from the properties window.  I could not reproduce this on other VM templates.  Clones of this template also have the tabs missing.

The missing tabs are OS Configuration, Application Configuration and SQL Server Configuration.

TFS 2012 lab management will not allow me to create an environment using this template, stating 'Domain User Name' is an not a valid property.

How do I get the missing tabs back?

SCVMM 2012 SP1: Native Port Profiles Maximum Bandwidth bug

$

I have found a bug in SCVMM 2012 SP1. When a Hyper-V host is using a Virtual port with the MaximumBandwidth at 2148Mbps or above VMM is incapable of reading/calculating this value and reports a negative number (for 2148 it VMM reads -2146). This in turn makes the port not compliant.

VMM 2012 R2 error configuring networking for Hyper-V 2012 R2 host - 25234

Currently running a 2012 Hyper-V 3 node cluster and using VMM 2012 R2.  I want to start building a HV 2012 R2 cluster so I have configured the networking to support that, and have added a new R2 host.  I have configured logical networks, switches, port profiles, etc for this.  I am getting the following error when attempting to configure the networking on the new host and I can't find any information on this error:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Error (25234)
The selected host adapter (HP NC382i DP Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapter #56$$$Microsoft:{143077D5-B28D-48B2-AEEF-0BD81597CC8D}) has an uplink port profile set configured with network sites, so logical networks, IP subnets, or VLANs cannot be directly modified on the host network adapter.

Recommended Action
Make the intended change to the uplink port profile set or choose a different network adapter and retry the operation.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If anyone has seen this before, I'd appreciate knowing how you got around it.  I can add more configuration information if needed, but for now I'm under a bit of a time crunch.

Thanks

New VM's on new Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster are getting all zeros for their MAC address

Currently running a 2012 Hyper-V 3 node cluster and using VMM 2012 R2.  I want to start building a HV 2012 R2 cluster so I have configured the networking to support that, and have added a new R2 host.  I have configured logical networks, switches, port profiles, etc for this.

When I go to create a new vm on the new cluster, the machine sets the mac address field to static and sets the mac address to all zeros (00:00:00:00:00:00) The selection for Dynamic is grayed out. I have checked and the host group it is in is inheriting the mac address pool from VMM.   There's also a mac address pool on the host server in Hyper-V manager under Virtual Switch.  Not sure which one it's supposed to use.

Ensure that the Windows Remote Management (WS-Management) service and the VMM agent are installed and running and that a firewall is not blocking HTTPS

traffic.

This problem can also be caused by antivirus software that is installed in the parent partition of the virtualization server (NODE2) if the real-time

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/961804.

If the error still persists, restart the server (NODE2), and then try the operation again.

PS:  VMM Agent is running, Firewall is allowing traffic and WS-Management is also running.

Are there any special settings required that I am missing.

Need help with following things:

1.  How to add Fixed Hard Disk to a Hardware Profile in SCVMM 2012 R2?  The new menu does not allow to add disk in the profile.

2.  How to configure Host Group in such a way that two machines part of cluster do not end up on the same host?

3.  How to configure WSUS integration with SCVMM 2012 R2?

Links to blogs/articles would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

I am getting this error when I trying to do any task on the Host Servers from SCVMM MS.  Sometimes it works and sometimes it fails such as Refresh Virtual Machine, etc.:

App Controller 2012 R2, cannot open multiple console windows at the same time

$

Hi All

I have just moved from SCVMM 2012 SP1 and AppController 2012 SP1 to the 2012 R2 versions. In the previous version my users were able login to app controller, select the virtual machine that they wanted to connect to and click on the console button (or right click and select console) and this would open in a new tab in IE, they could do this for multiple VM's and could have multiple tabs in IE so that they could switch between them easily.

However, since the upgrade, they can now open only one console tab. each time they click on a new VM and select console, it will open in the same IE tab. Meaning that switching between console sessions on multiple machines has become a lot harder.

I've checked all the obvious IE options, and multiple machines/users, so this seems to be a setting in Silverlight or in IIS somewhere that has changed. I've had a good search around (bing/google) but can't find anything. Has anyone got any suggestions on how we can get back to the old multiple consoles in there own tab scenario?

Cheers

Darren
