Hyper-V / NVGRE Gateways / SCVMM 2012 R2

I am currently investigating the roll out of network virtualisation using Hyper-V, Windows Server gateway and SCVMM 2012 R2

I have tested deploying a single WSG in a single datacentre and I can get VMs working with Network Virtualisation.

I have a requirement to deploy network virtualisation in multiple datacentres so that I am able to amongst other things live migrate VMs between datacentres with next to no downtime.

My question is what do I need to deploy to make this work?

For example do I need a WSG in each datacentre and if so are they completely independent of one another or are they aware of one another?

I understand that each datacentre will have its own provider address space but I'm assuming the customer VM network will be the same at each datacentre - this would mean the customer VM network gateway IP would be in two locations but does this matter if the provider addresses are different?

Is there anyone who has experience configuring WSG / NVGRE at multiple sites who could give some useful tips?

Thanks

John.

Cluster Live Storage Migration completes without deleting the source virtual hard disk VHDX

Testing HV setup in a cluster of two nodes with shared FC storage.  Storage is CSV on both nodes.  Storage migration of a VM from C:\ClusterStorage\A to C:\ClusterStorage\B completes without any problem.  Upon completion, the source VHDX are still left at C:\ClusterStorage\A.  The source files can be deleted manually.  All is done through VMM "Migrate Storage" option.  Why the storage migration does not delete the source files upon job completion?  Thanks!

App Controller 2012 R2, cannot open multiple console windows at the same time

Hi All

I have just moved from SCVMM 2012 SP1 and AppController 2012 SP1 to the 2012 R2 versions. In the previous version my users were able login to app controller, select the virtual machine that they wanted to connect to and click on the console button (or right click and select console) and this would open in a new tab in IE, they could do this for multiple VM's and could have multiple tabs in IE so that they could switch between them easily.

However, since the upgrade, they can now open only one console tab. each time they click on a new VM and select console, it will open in the same IE tab. Meaning that switching between console sessions on multiple machines has become a lot harder.

I've checked all the obvious IE options, and multiple machines/users, so this seems to be a setting in Silverlight or in IIS somewhere that has changed. I've had a good search around (bing/google) but can't find anything. Has anyone got any suggestions on how we can get back to the old multiple consoles in there own tab scenario?

Cheers

Darren

Hi all,

SCVMM 2012 R2 in prod. Because of power failure this server got down & I came to know about this from the critical errors in the event logs after this i am unable to connect to the SCVMM console.

Here is the Log file error:-

Microsoft.VirtualManager.DB.CarmineSqlException: Unable to connect to the VMM database.
Ensure that the SQL Server is running and configured correctly. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot open database "VirtualManagerDB" requested by the login. The login failed.
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM'.

The NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM & svcscvmm account is the DB owner of the SCVMM DB.

Hi all,

We are having SCVMM 2012 R2 in prod, Because of power failure this server got down recently & I came to know about this from the critical errors in the event logs after this i am unable to connect to the SCVMM console.

The NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM & svcscvmm(this account was used to run the scvmm service & to connect to db) account is the DB owner of the SCVMM DB.

Thanks,

Pranay.

Error 2927 when creating VM from template to remote SMB storage or CSV volume.

Hi everybody! When you try to create a VM from a template cause an error (2927), this occurs only if I create a VM on remote SMB storage or CSV volume, if I create a VM from a template on a local repository server (local disk C:\ for example) Hyper-V, while no such problem and everything goes well. Already during the week I can not solve this problem, and  and tried many methods but they do not help. Please help me to solve this problem. OS 2012R2 with last update, VMM2012R2 with last update. Thx!

Setup MPIO using Virtual Machine manager 2012 R2

Hi,

I wonder whether it is possible to configure my hyper-v hosts for MPIO to connect to an ISCSI target using SCVMM 2012 R2.

I can setup MPIO on the hosts itself just fine, but for the life of me, can't figure out how to achieve this from within scvmm without touching the hyper-v hosts. The ISCSI storage does not support smi-s so that could be a limiting factor.

I tried creating a virtual switch specifically for ISCSI, but when I try to assign that to my host, it only lets me bind it to one nic, as I've chosen not to team it in the port profile I guess.

Anyone know whether this is possible, and potentially have the steps needed to do this?

When you using a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, how many displays are allowed on an individual virtual desktop? I cannot find this anywhere in technet.

I asked a similar question in this forum a while ago. Here is the link.

I read the suggested blogs. However, the pain is persist.

Here is my environment:
1. Two computer with Windows Server 2012 R2 and Hyper-V enabled.
2. One computer with 10GB memory(HV001), another with 4GB(HV002).
3. With different memory on the computers, so I configured the reserves on the host individually. One HV001, the reserve is 5500MB, another is 1000MB. CPU reserve is the same, 10%. As you can see the following screenshot.

I created 3 VMs(2 with 1GB memory each other, the 3rd with 512MB) and put them running on the host HV001.
When I tried to create the 4th VM and put it on HV001, I got the following information.

However, when I tried to run "OPtimize Hosts" and got the same result like the one in my last post.

Is there a easy way to use dynamic optimization in SCVMM?

How to Uninstall a failed Virtual Machine Management Server (x64) installation ?

Dear Technet Team,

I cannont uninstall the Virtual Machine Management Server (x64). Already tried it with the Installation Image. The Uninstalling process suddenly crashed without no error. I delete everything so far DB as well because it was never in use. So how can I uninstall the Management Server. I did not install it a Cluster as well.

By the way i tried it with wmic but there i got "no instance available" error. I am stucking with this quite a while. I messed it up really hard so i think i must manually delete all regestry keys because i already delete some. Is there a way to uninstall it Forcefully ?

Thank you!

Yours sincerely,

Tobias

Hi All,

I am setting up SCVMM 2012 R2 in a production environment. Whenever I restart the SCVMM virtual machine the VMM service doesn't start automatically, I have to manually start it. I checked the VMM logs and in the event viewer i find the below error,

Service cannot be started. I added the 'VMMSVC' account as db_owner and sysadmin and also NT_Authority\System with same permissions still the service doesn't start on the start up.

I googled a lot and I find the threads with the error containing "General failure" but not with the above. Can someone please help me to find out why this error is occuring.

Thanks,

Ravi

Hello Guys, good everning!

When I try to clone some VMs from my SCVMM 2012 R2 Update Rollup 3, I receive the following error:

Error (2904)

VMM could not find the specified path C:\ClusterStorage\Volume6\VM-01\ExportFolder\VM-01\Virtual Machines\5E7811C6-6C0B-4EFF-93E0-02C8CEDC5386.xml on the HYPER-V01.domain.local server.

Recommended Action
Ensure that you have specified a valid file name parameter, and then try the operation again.

Warning (10655)
Hardware changes while cloning a Hyper-V virtual machine, VMware virtual machine, or stored virtual machine are not supported and were ignored.

Recommended Action
Make any hardware changes to the virtual machine after the cloning operation is complete.

I noticed that the XML file is not there, and the ExportFolder is created automatically on the moment that the cloning process is iniciated.

On this same environmnet, some other VMs with the same configuration I can do the clone without no error.

Thanks again for the help of you!

Query about SCVMM Host Cluster

Hi All,

We have built a private cloud for one of our customers using SC 2012 R2.

We have SCVMM 2012 R2 in place, everything was up & running till we face a power failure & now we have a configuration issue which made me think on the entire private cloud design.

What we have ?

1. A Storage Server - which has 1 TB disc attached. we have created 2 ISCSI Disks out of it.

2. A SCVMM 2012 R2 server - The ISCSI disc are connected to this server using ISCSI initiator.

3. 3 Hyper-v Hosts for Host cluster.

We have added the storage server in SCVMM & have created 2 LUN's. This server is also added as storage in Hyper-v host cluster. All the system center VM's were built on the hyper-v cluster with there VHD's on the Luns.

What the problem is ?

The SCVMM is now not able to connect to the iscsi disk due to some configuration problem (which was caused after a power outage) & our private cloud got down not a single VM is running now as they were all built on Host cluster with storage on iscsi disks.

I discussed this issue with my manager & he said that scvmm is just a management tools & once we have a cluster up & running we don't even need scvmm services running. which made me to rethink on the design of the private cloud.

Need Experts help :-

Should we connect the iscsi disk to all the hosts which were added in SCVMM. So, that even if scvmm is down every vm created on hyper-v cluster runs without any issue.

Thanks,

Pranay.

Storage migration for virtual machine fails with general access denied error

Hello all,

I have a annoying problem with storage migration.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V and SCVMM 2012 R2, SAN storage, CSV volumes.

Error (12700)
VMM cannot complete the host operation on the <fqdn> server because of the error: Storage migration for virtual machine 'My VM' (78B1982B-69D4-4377-8BA8-C559391797E3) failed with error 'General access denied error' (0x80070005).

Migration did not succeed. Could not start mirror operation for the VHD file 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume14\VMMDisks\MYVM_disk_1.vhdx' to 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume6\MYVM_disk_1.vhdx': 'General access denied error'('0x80070005').
Unknown error (0x8001)

Recommended Action
Resolve the host issue and then try the operation again.

This happens only when migrating/moving individual disk/vhdx(allow VHDs to be placed individually) without moving configuration. If moving configuration at the same time with disks everything works just fine. I can even do a live migration from one cluster to another without problems..rtual machine configuration everything works just fine.

VMM Management Server ACCESS DENIED - After the Update Rollup 02 (KB 2932926) installation

Hello guys! Good night!

My Environment:
VMM Server 2012 R2 UR 02 with HA
2 x Win Server 2012 R2 Std

Scenario:

After applying the Update Rollup 02 (KB 2932926) I ran the following command to check the version of the VMM Agent installed on all my servers:

"Get-VMMManagedComputer | Select Name, AgentVersion"

So, I ran the second command to update these VMM agent installed on all my servers:

"Update-VMMManagedComputer -VMMManagedComputer $Computer -Credential $Creds"

After that VMM Management server got the Access Denied status, giving me the following job error:

-----------

Error (10429)
An older version of the Virtual Machine Manager management server is installed on VMMDC-02.totvscloud.local. The VMM agent on the VMM management server cannot be upgraded independently.

Recommended Action
Remove VMMDC-02.totvscloud.local from the Managed Computers view of the VMM console, uninstall the VMM management server from VMMDC-02.totvscloud.local, and then add VMMDC-02.totvscloud.local back as a host or library server.

-------------

I did the recommended action, but when I re-install the VMM Management Server, the agent returns with the old RTM version, and if I try to update it, the same error is present again.

Is there anyway to correct this error? I thought to slepstream the UR 02 in the installation folder of the SCVMM. I dont't know if it is possible.

Thanks for the help!

SCVMM 2012 / WSUS Baseline Updates Selection

$

Hello everyone,

I have some questions that I have not been able to find my own answer to and I am turning to the forums in an effort to figure out the answers.

I manage a number of clusters using SCVMM 2012 R2 and have my WSUS server on a different server.  I am interested in leveraging the update feature of SCVMM.  After installing WSUS, I checked the configuration to ensure it was configured to not download updates locally.  After adding it to the fabric, I went through and configured the classifications and products. Essentially, the only thing I really want is Windows Server 2012 R2 updates at this current time.  So I went through and selected just that.

After doing so, I was going to create my baseline but it lists updates for products that are not what I had selected.  I see updates for products such as previous versions of Windows and Office.  I also noticed that within the WSUS console, SCVMM appears to have changed the system so that it downloads files locally to the WSUS server.

I suppose the heart of my post is around two questions

  1. Is there a way to limit the updates when creating the baseline?  Obviously, I can search for terms but it would be way easier for them to just not be there.  Is this possible?
  2. Is there a way to keep the setting so that WSUS does not download the updates?  I know it takes longer if I let the system download it fresh each time but that is not something we mind.  I was just hoping to keep the size down for my WSUS server.

I received this error no matter who'e credentials I use.  The virtual machine manager is running and I did restart it and still caannot connect.  I also tried, based on one suggestion, changing the virtual machine manager service logon to a domain account and I received the following error when tring to restart the service:

Error 1297; A PRIVILEGE THAT THE SERVICE REQUIRES TO FUNCTION PROPERLYDOES NOT EXIST IN THE SERVICE ACCOUNT CONFIGURATION

When I googled that error the suggestion was to make sure the logon account was part of the create global objects.  That didn't help.

What else can I try.

Service Deployment - SQL Server fails with Error 22738

Hi,

I'm trying to setup a Service Deployment for SQL Server.

The VM deploys, joins the relevant domain and then procedes to the SQL Server CompleteImage operation as expected, however this fails with the following:

-------------------------------

Error (22042)
The service SQL Server Deployment was not successfully deployed. Review the event log to determine the cause and corrective actions.

Recommended Action
The deployment can be restarted by retrying the job.

Error (22738)
The CompleteImage operation for the SQL Server Instance MSSQLSERVER could not be completed because the specified Windows account is not valid. Impersonation of the specified Windows account failed.
ErrorMessage: The user name or password is incorrect

Recommended Action
Provide a valid Windows account for the SQL Server CompleteImage operation.

Error (20400)
1 parallel subtasks failed during execution.

Error (21952)
Application deployment failed for one or more tiers or application hosts in the service SQL Server Deployment. Check job logs to get more information on the failed operation.

Recommended Action
Check error messages and retry the operation if needed.
-------------------------------

I've ensured that the passwords for the SQL accounts being used are correct (even to the point of typing it out in notepad and using copy/paste for both the VMM account and the Domain account) and the installation account is a member of the local administrators group.

The error is constant when using either a Domain account or a local administrator account in the SQL Server profile.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

Mike

Agent update on VMM management server

Hi!

I just installed Update Rollup 3 for SCVMM 2012 R2. Updating the agents on all hosts in the fabric was smooth sailing, but the "Agent Version" on the VMM management servers (clustered) still shows 3.2.7510.0 (base R2 installation). Viewing the Properties of the servers it shows that RU3 is installed, but I can't figure out how to update the VMM agent on these management servers.

VMM version and agent version

Does anyone have ideas on how I can update the agents to the latest version? I am guessing that the management servers' agents also are supposed to be updated after rollup installations, not just the other servers in the fabric?
