hard-coded computer name error in service template

$

I keep getting a hard-coded computer name message in my service template design.  I am using the @name@ variable.  even when I use @computername@ or any other variable, it still gives me this error.  It worked initially, allowing me to supply a name at deployment but subsequently it insists that it has a hard-coded name.  When I do a deployment, the server is named WITH the @ symbols!

Also, I've tried to follow Greg Shields demonstration and TechNet article on creating a scale-out RDS server.  He uses @RDSFirstServerName@ but my service template limits the computer name field to 15 characters.  How is it he's able to get away with this and I can't?  Is it because he's using VMM 2012 and I'm using 2012 R2?  Or is there something I'm missing here to support longer variable names?

VMM 2012 R2 - VMware host SAN Storage status set to 'Reserved'

$

This may be an easy fix. I'm hoping this is just a setting that I've missed. I have setup VMM 2012 R2 and connected our VMWare 5.5 hosts to it. When I open the properties of any of the hosts, and select storage, I can see all of the shared storage LUNs in the list, but they all have a status of Reserved. When I select the Hardware tab, I can see all of the LUNs and they have the Available for placement box enabled. How can I set this storage to online so I can deploy VMs to them?

Thanks

No CPU Average or Available Memory Info on Hosts in Fabric Resources View

Trying to figure out why a group of Server 2012 R2 hosts don't show any CPU Average (0%) or Available Memory (0 KB) in SCVMM 2012. Is there someplace in Hyper-V that I need to configure so SCVMM sees this? I have some 2008 R2 hosts that show both without a problem.

Deleting VM with snapshot/checkpoint is extremely slow in SCVMM 2012 R2

$

It appears deleting VM with checkpoint from SCVMM 2012 R2 is extremely slow.

There is the configuration:

one SCVMM 2012 R2 running on Windows Server 2012 R2

one Windows Server 2012 R2 as file share server (SMB), stores all VM files. The share is managed by SCVMM . uses local SSD disk. two gigabit ethernet ports connected to a switch.

two hyper-v hosts running Windows Server 2012 R2, non-clustered, managed by SCVMM, each hosts has three gigabit Ethernet ports connected to the switch.

Everthing works including live migration. Here is the problem:

When I deleted a VM with checkpoint, it appeared that SCVMM/Hyper-V merges something, it took a lot of time on reading each AVHDX and write to VHDX, this results two problems:

1. It took a lot of time and bandwidth. I am about to delete the VM (and all its files). Why SCVMM/Hyper-V wants to merge all files? The deletion took 29 minutes for a 36GB VM.  This VM is just plain standalone VM, no usage of template.

The expected result is to just delete all VM files and remove VM, don't do merge. (BTW: VMWare doesn't do merge, the deletion is done in a few seconds))

2. although all data file are on the file share, the hyper-v host still reads each file from file share, then write to another file on the same file share. It consumes significant network bandwidth. Can they offload the work to file server?

The expected result is that Hyper-V offload the transfer to file share server. It should not create huge amount of network io.

3. The merging operation is incredibility slow. around 24MByte/sec data being copied.

The hyper-v has 2xgigabit links, benchmark shows the file share access can easily go 200Mbytes/sec, and the file server side is SSD drive with 200+MByte/sec bandwidth. The expected result is if hyper-v ever merge, the speed is least 100MByte/s and hopefully go up to 200MByte/sec.  21MB/s is just painfully slow.

Did I miss anything?

VMM Application Profile - Powershell Script

I have an Application Profile, that runs a script:

executable = cmd.exe

parameters = /c %windir%\system32\windowspowershell\v1.0\powershell.exe -executionpolicy bypass -file script.ps1 @param@

I'm changing the @Param@ ServiceSetting value at the point of creating a Service, however, i get an error at the point where the VM Guest is executing the script:  Error 22632 - which is complaining about the param function in my script which i have in place to capture the param input from the parameter line in the Application Profile (as above).

Essentially, what i'm trying to do is execute a powershell script via the Application Profile and pass in a variable - any advice is appreciated?  Thanks!

Hi,

When I add a load balancer to service, it shows the following message in Service Desinger.

"using Microsoft Network Load Balancing in VMM requires network connectivity and two-way trust between VMM management server and the virtual  machine"

And then deployed service failed. The error message:

Error (25128)
None of the virtual machines related to the virtual IP (VIP) address (W45NRRF18O40S00) in Microsoft Network Load Balancing are responding.

Logical switch creation error

Hello!

I tried to create a logical switch and got this error:

It's rather strange for me because I set up the bandwidth setting only once (while creating a virtual network adapter port profile) and I even don't know what does mean"...bandwidth settings of logical switch" - I haven't seen such setting in a virtual switch properties... ???

Thank you in advance,

SCCM 2007 Migration to SCCM 2012

Hello,

I read http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/58ba35e5-d84e-4741-8089-624f5269a2ca/sccm-2012-design-consideration-advice?forum=configmanagergeneral&prof=required with the following notes:

Secondary vs. DP is a subjective call based on two factors: client count and available bandwidth. More clients and/or less bandwidths means secondary site, less clients and/or more bandwidth means DP. Both use a server OS so there's really no cost difference, just some added complexity for a secondary site. Without knowing the bandwidth, no way for me to be able to say one way or the other.
As for IBCM, correct, it's no a primary site server, it's simply a site system that typically hosts an MP, DP, and SUP. The App Catalog Website Point is also applicable.
Are you planning on managing legacy mobile devices or Mac OSX? If not, the Enrollment Proxy Point is not needed -- it's not applicable to IBCM anyway to my knowledge.
Also, the FSP must be on a separate site system so that clients can communicate with it via HTTP.

I have for now two sites:

- 25,000 Desktops on one site

- 1,500 Servers on the second site

in SCCM 2007 I had three sites: One Parent doing the reporting and two child sites handling the inventory, distribution, etc... (No SUP do far)

I have on each child sites 1 DP.

What should be changed for SCCM 2012?

What is "More Clients" or "Less Clients" ?

"More Bandwidth" or "Less Bandwidth"?

Thanks,

Dom

Network Switch requirements behind a NVGRE Gateway

$

Hello there,

I'm looking forward to set up a nice System Center 2012 R2 Environment, with one Major Site where the Infrastructure for System Center and the Virtual Machines reside. There are another 2 Sites which will get an NVGRE Gateway so I can have the same IP Setup both sites matched to the deployed VMs. We will call the Site where all the big Hardware sits Site A, Site B and C only will have a NVGRE Gateway so that physical Machines on Site B and C can Access their VM's with their locally assigned IP Addresses and not what Site A is configured with.

My question seems a bit silly but I haven't found any answer to this (neither in the Hybrid Cloud Guide nor somewhere else)

If I deploy the following layout on all 3 sites (simplified), what features will the Switch on the local site need? Any certain numbers like ARP Entries or anything?

Layout: [Hardware] ---- [Switch] ---- [NVGRE Gateway] ---- [ISP]

My ISP has assured me I'm on full IPv4/6 Dualstack and I can have an ASN on the site where the Hardware is. The other two sites are simple enough ADSL IPv4 Lines where the x86 commodity Hardware NVGRE Gateways will be set up. I understand that eBGP will not be possible with this kind of Setup but iBGP should be working?

So do I need something like a Juniper EX-4200+ Series Switch on each Site behind the NVGRE Gateway or will be a basic L2(+ ?) Switch do the Job on the local Networks or do I need to watch out for some specific Switch supported features to get going?

Thanks for your help in advance guys!

Understanding clouds

$

0

We have a local Hyper-V cluster that we recently upgraded from Windows Server (and VMM) 2008 R2 up to 2012 R2.

Obviously, VMMs model, particularly as it pertains to self service users has changed quite a bit.  I'm having a little bit of trouble understanding how it should be used.

Primarily - I'm trying to understand the purpose of the existence of "clouds".  I see that they are required for VMs to show up in App Controller, but I do not understand what functionality they are actually providing.

First, let me describe our users.  They are predominately software developers.  There are different projects going on.  Some people only work on one project, some work on multiple.  Most of our VMs are conceptually associated by a project. A handful though are more general (shared source control servers, etc).

At first, I thought I would create a cloud for each project team we have.  What we would like is for any of the project team members to manage (esp start/stop existing VMs, but also create them) VMs that are in the cloud for that project.  Members of Project B on the other hand, would never see these VMs.

So, I setup a user role and a cloud for "Project A".  However, when a VM was assigned into that cloud, no one in the Project A user role could see the VM until the owner actually went in and explicitly shared it (to the Project A user role).

To accomplish what I was wanting, it seems like instead I should simply create a single cloud (a "default" cloud - simply because I must have one, else VMs do not show up in App Controller).  Then user's will have to grant access on the VMs they own to the appropriate team members (by user or by role).  Not ideal, I would have hoped everyone would automatically get access to what was in that cloud, but at least I know how to manage that (and how to tell users to grant access to others).

But that leaves the question - what is a cloud?  Why would I want one?  Or more importantly - why would I want MORE htan one?  I feel like I'm just missing the point of it.

I tried Googling around, but everything just seemed to focus on HOW to create them, not why I want to do so.  Appreciate any insight you might have (or even just links to articles that actually touch on this).

Thanks,

Adam

SCVMM 2012 - Error (25100) when removing logical network without dependancies

$

I have been trying to remove some bad old logical networks for awhile now without luck. I have gone through the dependancies and removed them all until there are no more displaying. Then I try and remove the logical network and get prompted quickly with the error (25100) below. I am guesing the only way to remove this is in the database. I have gone into the database and found the ID's for the logical networks. Just curious if anyone knows how to remove them completely from SCVMM in the most efficient and effective manor. I appreciate any help in advance!

Error (25100)
VMM is unable to delete the logical network because dependent resources, such as logical network definitions, are still associated. Contact your VMM administrator for details about this error.

Recommended Action
Remove the logical network association with all dependent resources, and then remove the logical network.

Hi all,

Can we deploy an operating system using VM template created with SCVMM 2012. Please tell me how to do it ?.

I have created a P2V disk using SCVMM 2012. And then created a clone of this P2V disk. And deployed a vm based on this clone.

But I want to deploy  P2V on a physical machine. Can i do it. If yes then please guide me how to do it.

How to add an SG to the Admin Group of a newly created VM in SCVMM cloud

Hi, have given a team access to the SCVMM private cloud to create there own VM's , what I would like todo, is to add the SG that these guys are a member of to that servers Admin Group.

Otherwise they cannot log in, when once there server is created.

it joins to the domain fine etc.

Now, can this be done via PS in the template somewhere, or is there another way. ??

any ideas greatly appreciated

Thanks

SCVMM 2012 R2 - how to import Virtual Network and VLAN from hyper-v host.

$

Hi Folks,

I am just working with SCVMM 2012 R2,  I have added a host machine and all of the VMs that are on it.  I need to switch between using SCVMM and the Hyper-V management console on the host.

When I create a new VM using hyper-v manager, I assign an 'Internal' network and this has a VLAN of 2.  When I open the VM settings in SCVMM  the network adaptor setting is set to:-

Not connected to a VM Network
   Enable VLAN ID: 2
   Standard Switch:  Internal.

However, when I try and create a new VM in SCVMM I do not get the same options.

Does anyone have an instructions on how to about setting up SCVMM so that VMs created on this host are configured correctly with regards to networking?

I have seen quite a few articles that contain theory, but don't seem to be able to find any that explain how to actually go about doing it.

Regards

Andy

Setting IP Address in VMM Service Template/Configuration

$

I’m attempting to deploy a VM via a Service Template (Service Configuration) where I would like to set the IP Address (as opposed to it just picking the next available IP address from the IP Pool).

Obviously, I can not do this using “Service Settings”, as there is nowhere in the template for me to declare the Service Setting variable.

Therefore, I presume this should be done by updating the “Service Configuration” just before the New-SCService is executed.

After trying various things such as Granting an IP to the VM Configuration’s NIC - The result of this is that I can see the IP Address being allocated within VMM (Get-SCIPAddress), however when the VM gets created it still pulls an IP from the IP Pool (instead of using the IP i specified) and Get-SCIPAddress shows that the IP was assigned to a Virtual Adapter that has a different ID to the one I see/set in the VM Configuration.

Any suggestions appreciated!

Hi,

I've got a cluster with two nodes on Win2012r2. It have been added already configured in SCVMM2012r2. I did however configure the VM Networkt through Logical Switches.

1 - Logical Networks : ProdVMNET, with one site, GVEProdVMNet, where my hosts are and the Production vLAN 3108, subnet 172.31.8.0/24 :

2 - IP Pool linked with my Logical Switch and configured in the same subnet (172.31.8.x/24) :

3 - I've a port profile Uplink, ProdDynamicTeam, for creating the team dedicated to VM Network traffic on host.

4 - This Uplink is bound to my logical Switch, tVMNet

There is no enough disk space on the available volumes

Hi All,

I am facing issue while doing V2V through SCVMM 2012 R2. Below is the screenshot:

As i have 2 CSV with 2 TB each, still at the window of select host, SCVMM only able to recognize the local H.D.D space which is 55 GB free & i am converting 265 GB VM  & it's denying to go further.

Kindly suggest any solution asap.
