SCVMM 2012 R2 High Bandwidth usage

We've got a Windows 2012R2 server running SCVMM 2012 R2, when we add an Hyper-V host (running Windows 2012) we see that vmmservice.exe generates a little bit of traffic to that host; if we wait a few hours the amount of traffic has risen to about 1,5mbit; looked at over a longer period this growth is pretty linear and doesnt seem to stop until we restart the SCVMM server.
It's all traffic going to port 5985 and if i look at the traffic it's all WinRM requests.

Anyone know why this is happening?

Get-SCJob / Get-Job alias conflicts

Unfortunately, the Get-SCJob SCVMM command was aliased to Get-Job , which is a command that comes with Windows / Powershell natively..

In order to get around this awesome (sarcasm) problem, if you are trying to get to the Windows jobs, you have to reference the fully qualified command, which is:

Microsoft.PowerShell.Core\Get-Job

Otherwise, you'll always get the results from Get-SCJob whether you intended to or not.

Have an open case on this, no hotfix / fix date supplied yet.

VMM 2012R2: VMM Server, agent status: access denied

After upgrade SCVMM 2012SP1 to 2012R2 Library Server became unavailable. All library sources with status "missing".

In VMM Console (Fabric - Servers - Infrastructure) VMM Server and Library Server agent status "access denied".

Tryed to remove and add Library Server: Error 24363 VMM agent needs to be reassociated.

Reassociating with different credentials (local and domain) goes fine, but agent status still "access denied".

By the way, after upgrade SCVMM no new events in windows eventlog.

How to repair work of VMM Agent on VMM Server?

How to get rid of old dependencies on Stored VM

Hi,

I'm changing some stuff in my SCVMM Network design. I'll have to delete some stuff, starting with VM Network.

I did hunt for dependencies, essentially by removing any references of my VM Network in Hardware Profiles, VM templates and deployed templates.

Unfortunately, I still have dependencies in Library Stored VM. I did try to change the vNIC config on them. It worked for one of them, then I got this message :

Error (1285)

Virtual Machnine Manager cannot perform hardware configuration changes on virtual machine VMNAME because it is stored in the library. This functionality is not supported.

Recommended Action

Deploy the virtual machine to a Hyper-V host and then try the operation again.

I've no idea why it did work once. Since the deploy wizard of stored VM asks on which network to connect the VM, the depedency is totally useless.

Any idea how to force my VM Network deletion ? I don't want to waste time to deploy hundred of archived VMs, change parameters and stored them again :(

Thx,

Hel

Total Storage Size Not Updating in VMM2012 Sp1 UR1

I have VMM 2012 SP1 (Upgraded from RTM) Managing a 7 Node 2008 R2 SP1 Cluster, all at WMF 3.0 with Hyper-V hotfix. I use Powershell, VMM and Excel to create reports on storage and memory consumption for an assortment of clouds/tenants.

I recently added a pre-exisiting virtual machine to VMM that had 2 Dynamicaly Expanding VHDs that both had space available to compact. After migrating it to the cluster (prior to compacting) the full size of the VHDs was displayed (~300GB). I ran a compact and the total size and acording to Windows Exporer it went from 300 GB to about 120GB, but in VMM it remained at 300GB. I refreshed, migrated, restarted, recompacted, waited over 24 hours and nothing changed and there are no errors in my job logs, but the size remained at ~300GB. What finally fixed it was creating a checkpoint and immediately removing the checkpoint. Then I realised that no Virtual machines are updating their size, or have been updating their size since the upgrade. I have another VM that shows 0.01 GB used in VMM when in Windows Explorer it shows 109GB. another that shows 730GB but is now actually at 780GB. So creating and removing checkpoints for 200+ running virtual machines is not an option.

This means quotas aren't being enforced properly and my reports arent acurate, which is incredibly bad for me.

In VMM2012 RTM this wasnt a problem as numbers would change at least on a daily basis, which is my reporting period. Now, the storage numbers on my reports barely change.

Can't Create Service Due to Insufficient Host Resources?

I have created a simple, single-tier Service Template. If I now create a Service from this Service Template, I get an error 23737. ("The deployment configuration for VM with name %Name; cannot be placed on the host group or cloud that it targets. More detailed information can be found by getting star ratings for the target host group or cloud.Ensure that sufficient host resources are available on the host group or cloud that this virtual machine configuration targets by resolving any issues found while rating the virtual machine and try the operation again.")

My Cloud's capacity is set to all unlimited. The hosts (it's a three-host cluster) have some virtual machines running but I don't think they're overcommited.

What could be the problem here?
Thanks in advance!

"Unsupported Cluster Configuration" status for all VM's in SCVMM 2012 R2

I have multiple Hyper-V 2012 R2 clusters that are managed via SCVMM 2012 R2. I want to make all the VM's highly available, but I receive the following errors.

VM status - Unsupported Cluster Configuration

error 13923 - highly available virtual machine is not supported by VMM because its cluster resource group is not configured correctly.

error 13706 - the host network adapter is not associated with any logical networks

I have 2 10Gb NICS teamed on all the Hyper-V Hosts. Then I create virtual switches and virtual NICS in Hyper -V. I then create separate VLANS for each virtual NIC to segment traffic for clustering, live migration, etc.

I found the following article, but it seems to just show how to identify the issue, not resolve it.

Setting computer name on a VM created from template (SCSM, SCVMM and SCORCH)

$

We've set up some basic server provisioning automation to see how it works. It's a fairly simple setup so far:

1. User submits ticket via the SCSM portal; the ticket includes the desired machine name.

2. Ticket requires our team's approval before the workflow continues into Orchestrator.

3. If approved, an Orchestrator runbook is kicked off, using SCVMM to create the server from a template.

The resulting server has the correct machine name in SCVMM, but the machine name inside the OS is randomly generated (the template currently has * in OS Configuraiton -> Identity Information in the VM Template properties).

What's the best way to make the computer name inside the OS reflect the desired machine name? I can think of a number of ways we could accomplish this, but I don't know SCORCH/VMM that well yet. I'm wondering if I have overlooked something simple inside the existing process we're using. I suspect that, if there is an easy solution, it would lie in VMM.

Many thanks for your time and consideration.

WinRM failures after Reinstall of VMM (using existing database)

Hey there Technet,

I have recently needed to reinstall SCVMM 2012 R2 on my server due to the free license expiration and had to reinstall to apply a new license. Since the Reinstall, I now get errors constantly complaining about not having access rights for WinRM. Most of the forums and troubleshooting guides indicate that you just need to ensure that the service is started (which it is).

At this point, I am at a loss for what to do or check. I reinstalled using an existing database. The only 2 Items that I am not sure on is if I am using the same domain account for SCVMM service and if I had the encryption keys stored in active directory.

Can anyone provide me with a list of concise locations or test that I might be able to check to see what is causing SCVMM to fail to talk to my VM Cluster hosts?

We are using Hyper-V in a 3 host cluster which are supporting a number of production VM's.

Thanks in advance,

-Jared

How do you create an external logical switch in SCVMM2012?

I've been trying to find out how to create an external(insecure) logical switch, that some of the NICs in the Office 365 servers (Federation Services Proxy server among others) need to be connected to.
But I've yet to find a guide that shows you how to do this.

Are there anyone who knows how, or have superior google skills than me, that can find such a guide? :P
Thanks.

VMM 2012 R2 - Network Received/Sent Throughput Stats

$

Hi all, who has used VMM 2012R2 and has looked at the Network Received / Network Sent Throughput statistics that you see in the VMs view in the Home tab? Its shows the network activity for VMs and I'd like to know how these figures are derived. What I'm really trying to do is to accumulate some statistics of which VMs are generating the most disk I/O over time. I've got several 2012R2 hv clusters using CIFS shares and cluster shared volumes. Anybody know of a way that I can collect per vm disk I/O stats if I'm using CIFS shares and CSVs for virtual machine storage? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Side question: If I have iscsi drives connecting to virtual machines, do these disks bypass hyper-v and would I be able to monitor disk I/O on them?

User Roles Problem

Hello VMM Geeks,

I am using SCVMM 2012 R2 with Update Rollup 4. I have configured User Roles for each service groups (like Exchange-Admins, SCCM-Admins, SCOM-Admins, etc.), assigned the Self-Service user rights for each User Role, and added the respective service accounts for each user Role in the Members tab.

I have not added the User IDs, but the service accounts for each user role.

I installed the VMM Console on the desktops of users. Now, the users are logging-in on the console through ‘Use current Microsoft Windows session identity’, it opens a small window of Select User Role (Select the user role you would like to use for this session), which shows the drop-down options for all the configured user roles. When any user chooses the Administrator (VMM default) user role, users are getting connected to VMM with all administrative privileges.

This is a crucial security threat as any user is able to easily login to VMM with all administrative privileges.

Following are the members of Administrator user role:
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
CONTOSO\DomainAdmins
CONTOSO\SCVMM_Admin
CONTOSO\VMM_Node1$
CONTOSO\VMM_Node2$
CONTOSO\VMM_ServiceCluster$
CONTOSO\VMM_CNO$

When the users login using their designated service accounts, it works fine and VMM shows only their assigned VMs. But the thing is that I cannot restrict the users from logging on the VMM console with Administrator user role.

Please help and advise me ASAP.

I have a powerful hardware and already downloaded the following evaluation system center components :

  • SC2012 R2 SCAC EVALVHD
  • SC2012 R2 SCCM SCEP EVALVHD
  • SC2012 R2 SCO EVALVHD
  • SC2012 R2 SCOM EVALVHD
  • SC2012 R2 SCSM DW EVALVHD
  • SC2012 R2 SCSM EVALVHD
  • SC2012 R2 SCVMM EVALVHD
  • W2K12-R2

all I need to know is there any order to deploy above components ? Or is there a guide to follow ? as I saw on Microsoft website individual components ships with its own deployment guide there is no guide to deploy all of them together ?

Hi All,

I am new in System Center. I am using System Center 2012 R2. I have a web application written by dot net, which shows the list of virtual machines created in the SCVMM.  Now, I need to select a Virtual Machine from the list, and click a link named "console access". This will allow the console access to the virtual machine. How can I perform this task?

Thanks in advance,
Moohak

SCVMM 2012r2 UR5 Issues

$

Hi All,

We have just updated SCVMM 2012R2 to UR5 and are having a few issues. When we try to perform a live storage migration the job will instantly fail with:

Error (20404)
VMM cannot find a required object.

Recommended Action
Ensure the object is valid, and then try the operation again.

Also we are using Hyper V Replica to replicate to our DR site. The SCVMM console shows the replication health as "Not Applicable" and replication status as "Disabled". However checking replication within Hyper V Manager shows that it is still working ok.

Has anybody else had these issues or know of a fix?

Cheers

Duplicate VMs issue

Hello,

I am running SCVMM 2012 R2 with UR 5. Our VMs are running on the Windows Failover Cluster. One of the VMs (let’s say VM1) is showing duplicated in the SCVMM Console.

Virtual Machine State of both duplicate VMs is Stopped, as well as the Status of both VMs is Stopped. When I try to delete any of the duplicate VMs, it prompts “You have chosen to remove the following virtual machines from Virtual Machine Manager and delete their virtual hard disks: VM1. Do you want to continue?”

Date Added of one VM is 1/26/2015, and the Date Added of other VM is 12/20/2014. When I migrate the VM from one host to another using the Failover Cluster Manager, it updates the Host name for both of the duplicate VM entries. Actually, I was just trying to see which entry is real and which one is fake.

Please help me to remove these duplicate VM entries.

scvmm 2012 custom properties broken

$

I'm having this issue and wondering if it's a BUG:

Using powershell on the VMM 2012 server, Legacy custom properties (Custom1-Custom10) cannot be updated. Try this and see:

get-vm | select name,{$_.customproperties[9]}
get-vm | Set-VM -custom10 "TEST10"  | Select Name
get-vm | select name,{$_.customproperties[9]}

What I find is that custom9 hasnt changed for all VMs. sometimes it changes for none of them... :(

I can set other fields (like -TAG) just fine...

yes I'm admin and running elevated powershell.

I'd appreciate it if someone can verify these symptoms on their systems.

cheers,

Can't Delete Private Cloud - tbl_WLC_PhysicalObject not being updated

$

I am having issues with our SCVMM instance where I can't delete Private Clouds...even if there empty.

When I right click the Private Cloud and click Delete, the "Jobs" panel says it finished successfully, however, the Private Cloud is not deleted.

After doing some researching, I believe its because entries in the tbl_WLC_PhysicalObject database table are not being updated correctly, when a VM is moved from one Private Cloud to another. After determining the "CloudID" of the Private Cloud I am trying to delete, I still see resources assigned to this Private Cloud in the tbl_WLC_PhysicalObject table, even though from VMM Console, the Private Cloud shows up empty.

For some testing purposes, I assigned a VM back to the Private Cloud I am trying to delete, only to move it out again and gather some tracing/logging. When I moved the VM back out of the Private Cloud, I had a SQL Profiler running in the background, capturing the SQL statements on the DB server. Looking at the "exec dbo.prc_WLC_UpdatePhysicalOBject" statement, I see the @CloudID variable is assigned the "CloudID" of the Private Cloud the VM is currently assigned to/the Private Cloud I am trying to delete and is NOT the CloudID of the Private Cloud the VM is being moved to/assigned to.

Instead of having the VMM Console GUI do the Private Cloud assignment/change...I copied the PowerShell commands out...so I can run them manually. Looks like the script gets 4 variables ($VM, $OperatingSystem, $CPUType, and $Cloud), and then runs the "Set-SCVirtualMachine" CMDLET. For the $Cloud variable, it does return the proper "CloudID" of the Private Cloud I am trying to move the VM too (I ran it separately and then ran an ECHO $Cloud to look at its value). When I run the "Set-SCVirtualMachine" CMDLET, the output has values for "CloudID" and "Cloud" and these are still the values of the source Private Cloud/Private Cloud I am moving the VM out of and ultimately want to delete.

Has anyone ran into this? Is something not processing right in the "Set-SCVirtualMachine" CMDLET?
