System center Stack / private cloud setup with network planning

$
0
0

friends to start with i am going to put the same query on private cloud thread also as i am not sure where it best suits and where will i get the most relevant answers.

ok i have to do a private cloud implementation using System center and later on will have azure pack on top of System center but i am not to put all the pieces together as setup wise i have

a. two routers / switches/ two different kinds of firewalls each two quantity

b. Multi please servers

I am having doubts on the network side of it as how the network segments will be as my understanding it servers will connect to switch .. switches to firewall 1 which is basically for filtering all apart IP based attacks and then this firewall to ASA and then ASA to router.. but i am not sure how to put the network segments.

second is ... i understand network in system center is now that IP can be managed automatically but how it will work with outer segments .. means if VMM can manage the network leg for the internal IPs what about NAT to putlic IP via firewall 1 or 2.. is this going to be a manual procedure... i want to keep the max things automated i can.

guys can you please provide me the best approach for this deployment. if i have to configure these devices stand alone i can do it. but putting all the pieces together.. i am stuck with.

Mark as useful or answered if my replies helped you solving your query.
Thanks, Happiness Always

Unexplainable delay with Hosts property on objects returned by Get-SCVMHostGroup

Executing the following cmdlet returns an empty collection (maybe $null) for the Hosts property initially.

Get-SCVMHostGroup -VMMServer "my_vmm_server" -Name "Production"

AllChildGroups            : {}
AllChildHosts             : {}

But after some unknown time, without touching anything, if I rerun thesame command, the property is suddenly populated. The elapsed time between the initial run and when it is populated can be anywhere from3 to 7 minutes.

AllChildGroups            : {}
AllChildHosts             : {}

Can somebody please explain this? Is there a way to get the property populated immediately? Is there a different command I can run to get the collection of hosts?

In my particular case, I ultimately need to find the host (under a particular host group) with the lowest number of virtual machines so I can use that for provisioning a new vm.

Hi,

Upgraded out System Center VMM 2012 R2 Update Rollup 4 installation to Update Rollup 5 and noticed that when modifying the properties of a virtual machine and attempting to save the changes that the VMM console hangs.

Removed UR5 and the VMM console operates normally.

Reapplied UR5 and our VMM console hang issue returns.

Anyone else seeing this with the UR 5 update ?

SCVMM 2012 R2 - "Computer Name" Missing from Guest Machines?

$

Hi,

Just set up SCVMM 2012 R2 on Windows Server 2012. Problem- after creating a few VM's (hosted on a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V host), I'm noticing that on the "General" tab of the Properties dialog for VMs with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2012, the "Computer name:" field is blank. I have the Virtual machine guest services installed on the VMs, and all updates installed on the VMs. On VMs running 2012 R2 as the OS, the "Computer name:" field is populated correctly. Is this a known issue, an unknown issue, or am I just doing something wrong? The problem here ultimately is that I'm trying to create a Visual Studio Lab Management environment, and when doing so, it complains that the computer name is missing when I try to add the machines to the environment.

Thanks

Storage Provider not responding after installing SCVMM 2012 R2 UR5

After installing UR5 registered storage providers show Not Responding. I had two registered, both scale out fileservers in the same domain as VMM  that were working fine before UR5. Sofs running 2012R2 with latest patches

Trying to refresh provider:

Error (26101)
Storage discovery of provider {0869e333-12f6-44c7-b6b7-7139530a18c9} for user hyper-v\<user> failed from VMM01.hyper-v.blaa.com with error code 46010.

Recommended Action
Specify valid provider, port and user credentials for storage discovery.

The other one I deleted to recreate it. The deletion yielded:

Error (26312)
Unregistering the storage subsystem with unique ID {bca715fb-ce94-47f5-9558-f8e862c3e7dc}:SS failed from VMM01.hyper-v.blaa.com with error code 46005 [SM_RC_SUBSYSTEM_NOT_REGISTERED].

However the storage provider was removed and now if I run Get-SCStorageProvider i can't see it. When I try to add it back I get an error :-(

Error (26311)
Registration of the storage subsystem ss02.hyper-v.blaa.com for user hyper-v\<user> failed from VMM01.hyper-v.blaa.com with error code 4 [SM_RC_GENERIC_FAILURE].

Incomplete VMs Memory Info

$

Hello All,

I have SCVMM 2012 R2 with UR 5. My VMs are running on two different clusters of Hyper-V Hosts.

In the VMM Console, I can not see the correct information about the memory status of VMs. My Only 7 out of 75 VMs are showing the Memory Status. Moreover, the status of Startup Memory, Assigned Memory and Memory Demand is also not correct. For example, my heaviest VM (which is running SAP) is showing Memory Demand = 0 KB in peak hours, which is not possible. Same is the case with many other VMs.

Please help and advise.

Thank you.

Service Template Errors

$

Hi,

I am setting up a single tier service template that simply installs the symantec endpoint protection client onto a virtual machine at as a pre-install script running a batch file from a custom resource package I created. The application installs (with a reboot pending on the application) however I get a load of error messages telling me that the service has failed to install.

The details are as follows:

Custom Resource Package = setup.exe, scvmmcrt.cr, InstallSEP.cmd
Install.cmd is below:

@echo off
echo Installing Symantec Endpoint Protection...
start /wait Setup.exe
if errorlevel 1 (
    echo "SEP installation failed."
    exit 1
    goto EOF
)
echo Symantec Endpoint Protection installed.
:EOF

The application profile has this to run under the system account with 500sec timeout. I did try to change the advanced settings to enable logging but for some reason these settings will not apply and they always change back to default for some reason?

The errors I get are listed below:

Error (22042)
The service TESTSVC1 was not successfully deployed. Review the event log to determine the cause and corrective actions.

Recommended Action
The deployment can be restarted by retrying the job.

Error (22753)
The script command with properties: Type (PreInstall), Deployment Order (1) and Parent Type (ApplicationProfile), failed to complete successfully. Refer to the errors list for more information.

Recommended Action
If the script command's job restart action is set to restart, then the script will be re-executed.  Otherwise, the script command will be skipped when the job is restarted, in which case corrective action should be taken to mitigate the effects of the script command failure.

Error (22631)
The script command exit code 1 matched the failure policy setting "Match any value other than zero." Standard output log data: "Installing Symantec Endpoint Protection...
"SEP installation failed.""

Recommended Action
If the script command's job restart action is set to restart, then the script will be re-executed. Otherwise, the script command will be skipped when the job is restarted, in which case corrective action should be taken to mitigate the effects of the script command failure.

Error (20400)
1 parallel subtasks failed during execution.

Error (21952)
Application deployment failed for one or more tiers or application hosts in the service TESTSVC1. Check job logs to get more information on the failed operation.

Recommended Action
Check error messages and retry the operation if needed.

Any Ideas where I am going wrong?

App Controller 2012 R2, cannot open multiple console windows at the same time

$

Hi All

I have just moved from SCVMM 2012 SP1 and AppController 2012 SP1 to the 2012 R2 versions. In the previous version my users were able login to app controller, select the virtual machine that they wanted to connect to and click on the console button (or right click and select console) and this would open in a new tab in IE, they could do this for multiple VM's and could have multiple tabs in IE so that they could switch between them easily.

However, since the upgrade, they can now open only one console tab. each time they click on a new VM and select console, it will open in the same IE tab. Meaning that switching between console sessions on multiple machines has become a lot harder.

I've checked all the obvious IE options, and multiple machines/users, so this seems to be a setting in Silverlight or in IIS somewhere that has changed. I've had a good search around (bing/google) but can't find anything. Has anyone got any suggestions on how we can get back to the old multiple consoles in there own tab scenario?

Cheers

SCVMM 2012 R2 Bare-Metal-Deployment not starting

Hey!

I have a W2K12 R2 Server with SCVMM 2012 R2 CU4 and enabled WDS-Role.

The Server ist already registered as a PXE-Server within SCVMM.

When I start a Bare-Metal-Deplyoment, it fails during DeepDiscovery, because it's not booting into the Bootimage using PXE.

I had to set DHCP-Options 66 (SCVMM-IP) and 67 (boot\x64\wdsnbp.com).

The VMM OSD Provider is installed. Below is the output of wdsutil /get-server /show:config I have also checked the path (D:\RemoteInstall\DCMgr\bin\OSDPxeProvider.dll) for the .dll

WDS PXE Providers:
     Name: VMMOSDProvider
     Path: D:\RemoteInstall\DCMgr\bin\OSDPxeProvider.dll
     Order: 1
     Critical: Yes

     Name: WDSDCPXE
     Path: C:\Windows\system32\wdsdcpxe.dll
     Order: 2
     Critical: No

Within WDS PXE is configured to respond only to knwon Clients (or not to any)

In the WDS-EventLog I Receive the following error:
The following client attempted to boot from PXE but was ignored because it is not recognized:

Hardware Address: 40-F2-E9-C3-71-74
IP: 192.168.222.5
Device ID: {2740D0D9-885B-11E4-AF74-40F2E9C37170}
ClientArchitecture: 1
Prestaged: false

The Device GUIDs are matching between VMM and the Device.

Do you havbe any further Ideas?

Kind Regards
jojo

Basics...?

Hi All,

I guess this could be my new home for a while!

Background on me: Been involved with automation since Radia 2.0 days, through to SCCM 2007 and up to ConfigMgr 2012 R2.

However, I've had a new project given to me; Self Service Provisioning for Servers using SCVMM, Windows Azure Pack etc on VMWare ESX/i.

I'm finding that blogs etc on this are very limited, also quite confused by the whole 'fabric' thing. I've imported our test vCenter into VMM and it seems to have consumed everything; storage, VMs, Networks etc - which I think is good!?

What I'm looking for are some of the basics in plain english:

1. What are the basic things I need to build a VM? (i.e. what 'fabrics' do I need to ensure are setup?)
2. Are there any 'gotchas' in using VMWare with VMM?
3. Any good websites/forums I should be looking at? (For ConfigMgr there are lots...)
4. I'm thinking that when the basics are setup, then it won't really matter what Hypervisor I use - it will all be pretty much the same?

Thanks in advance.

Once again, its not me being lazy - I have searched and even took out a Pluralsight sub, but most stuff is aimed at Hyper-V and not VMWare.

VMM 2012 sp1 keeps on crashing randomly when refresh hosts or VMs

$

This problem has bothered us so much since we installed the last 1 or 2 update rolls. I was not able to find any relevant info online after digging for hours. The forum is my last hope now so any suggestion would be very much appreciated.

We are currently on 3.1.6018.0, with all the updates for SP1 installed. Every time we start the VMM console, we have to keep our fingers crossed, very likely it will crash and we have to restart the VMM service. Then we would be fine for a while until later someone starts a new VMM console session.

The errors logged every time: 2 identical event 1(I found it interesting to have identical errors from the same source to be logged twice), and event 19999

I think the core part of the error should be this:

P5(methodName):M.V.E.D.SANStorageManagementHelper.FindVolumeForGivenFileSystemPath

P6(exceptionType):System.NullReferenceException

the VMM has all our NAS listed, but we are using CSV through failover cluster manager and not using VMM to provision storage, is this part of the problem?

Event 19999:

Error1/12/2015 11:29:54 AMVirtual Machine Manager  19999None

Hello Everyone,

I have VMM 2012 R2 configured and All the Hyper-v host Added to Fail-Over Cluster.

Most of the VMs are tag the VLAN ID and few of the VMs are without VLAN Tag. I have configured the Dynamic Optimization.

Every 10 minutesDynamic Optimization running and base on the load on the host VMs are moving to different host.

Problem is Vlan Tag VMs are not live migration different host While running the Dynamic Optimization. Rest of the VMs (with out vlan id )are moving  to different host.

Vlan Tag VMs are live migrating through Fail-over cluster and Through normal VMM live migration.

While running the Dynamic Optimization job VMs i'm getting below errors on VMM job.

Error (26857)

The VLAN ID (532) is not valid because the VM network (INTERNAL) does not include the VLAN ID in a network site accessible by the host.

Recommended Action

Either specify a valid VLAN ID, or do not specify a VLAN ID and a valid one will be assigned automatically.

Any one have any idea please let me know.

Does SC VMM 2012 SP1 latest UR or 2012 R2 support the Nexus 1000v for vmware

Hi,

Does VMM 2012 SP1 support configuring the nexus 1000v for vmware switch?   For a long time this support did not exist but we have a Microsoft system engineer saying that it is supported now?

Before we could not configure virtual networking, virtual switches on the nexus 1000v from VMM.

Thanks Lance

MsiInstaller 1035 Events - VmmAgent

Hi,

I have 2 Hyper-V hosts, both on 2012 R2.  I just added both to be managed by VMM 2012 R2.  Every 30 minutes, MsiInstaller logs a 1035 event to advise that it has 'Reconfigured' the product and does so for each app installed on the server.

On one host, I removed it from VMM.  As such, this stopped the 1035's being logged. So this points to the vmmagent.

Anyone else see this and/or have a fix?

Cheers

Unable to get SQL profile to work when deploying a service: Error (22738)

I have done a search and not seen anything similar so apologies if I sound stupid.
My set up is as follows
2 node Clustered Hyper-V server 2012, SCVMM 2012 SP1. VM template contains (WS2012 SP1 +patched to 26 Feb 15) sysprepped SQL Server 2012 SP1 + patched.

I have read this in minute detail and still at a loss.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/scvmm/archive/2011/09/27/vmm-2012-sql-server-profile.aspx

What I am trying to do is use the VMM SQL Server profile to install a default SQL Server instance on my sysprepped VM template but it will never complete as I cant find ANY run as account that will work. I always get the error below, its doing my nut!
I can't see how this will ever work as the VM temlpate is a sysprepped image (workgroup not domain joined as per recommendations) and machine names are generated at creation time (e.g. WIN-05TBF9B79A4) so how can I provide an account with Administrator prvelidges that will be valid to allow VMM to compelte the SQL configuration bit? I am not able to put in .\Administrator in the profile so what can I do?

I am at a loss, please help me, someone MUST have been able to do this. this bit is not mentioned in any blogs or step by steps, its just kind of ignored so quite frustrating.

Yours expectantly

Andy

Application Administrators can't see VLAN configuration on VMs in VMM 2012 R2

Hi, I have the following issue on my VMM 2012 R2 infrastructure.

I have created a cloud with a Hyper-V Cluster in it. Configured a Application Administrator Role (Self Service) and assigned all permissions related to this cloud and Hyper-V Cluster, including a couple of VM Templates and a VM Network.

They users can see the VMs, create VMs but they cannot configure the VLAN inside the VM.

If I go to the VM settings using the full VMM admin, I can do it, select the VM Network and then select the appropiate VLAN, but when I try to do this using the Application Administrator account I configured specifically to this Cloud and Cluster, I can select the same VM Network but can't see any options related to VLAN configuration.

What am I missing? Is this the default behavior? Do I need an additional permission? Where?

Thank you for your responses.

Regards.

NVGRE NAT Issues with Update Rollup 5

Hello I'm looking to see if anyone is seeing the same situation when deploying a new NVGRE gateway after UR5.

In my test I have a Created a Front End Network on a Logical Switch.  There is a Logical Network and Network Site is 10.0.0.0/24.  I create a Front End Pool of 10.0.0.5-10.0.0.50.

I have a NVGRE Gateway provisioned to use this Front End Network and HVN Tenant Network as the Backend.  All is good there.

Now I go to set the Connectivity on one of my Tenant VM Networks. I tell it to use NAT.  For NAT Translation I set the IP to 10.0.0.20.  Hit oK, and away it goes.

Now if I go to the NVGRE Gateway and IPCONFIG, I can see that it has created the 10.0.0.20 Address on my Front End NIC, however, it has put the Subnet Mask to255.255.0.0 ?  I'm really not sure why the IP is being created and not abiding by my IP Pool and Network Site definition which has a Subnet of 255.255.255.0?

Anyone else seeing this issue?

Thanks,

Jason

SCVMM R2 Hangs on removing vmguest.iso from the virtual DVD drive

In addition to dealing with the "INCOMPLETE VM CONFIGURATION" (bug)  in SCVMM R2 (which is cleared only with a complete reinstall of the software and database), I have come across a new problem.

1.  Find a machine with vmguest.iso in the virtual dvd drive.

2.  Change the drive to "No Media"

3.  Click "OK"

SCVMM HANGS.
