Compliance scan failes to complete the first time

$

Hi

i have a issue during compliance scan in SCVMM, i always get the following error during scan of a host the first time (after a reboot or if it's a long time since the last scan)

when i run the scan a second time, it works like it should without any errors.

Error (2927)
A Hardware Management error has occurred trying to contact server host0000  .

WinRM: URL: [http://host0000:5985], Verb: [INVOKE], Method: [ScanForUpdates], Resource: [http://schemas.microsoft.com/wbem/wsman/1/wmi/root/scvmm/UpdateManagement]
Unknown error (0x80338043)

Recommended Action
Check that WinRM is installed and running on server host0000. For more information use the command "winrm helpmsg hresult" and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2742275 .

Compliance scan for virtual machines work's the first time, (SCVMM server's PXE, LIB etc)

So it's only for physical host's and only the first time.

When you remove a virtual hard disk from a virtual machine in System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2

Hi Experts !!!

We are on W2012R2 Hyper-V with SCVMM2012R2.

"When you remove a virtual hard disk from a virtual machine in System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2, the .vhd file on the Hyper-V server is deleted without warning"

http://blogs.technet.com/b/scvmm/archive/2009/11/16/kb976246-removing-a-vhd-from-a-virtual-machine-in-vmm-2008-r2-deletes-the-file-on-the-hyper-v-server-without-warning.aspx (This link is for SCVMM 2008R2, but the we are facing the same issue on SCVMM 2012R2)

Is this a normal behavior for SVCMM 2012R2? If not how to stop this from happening in the future.

VMM 2012 R2 - VMware host SAN Storage status set to 'Reserved'

$

This may be an easy fix. I'm hoping this is just a setting that I've missed. I have setup VMM 2012 R2 and connected our VMWare 5.5 hosts to it. When I open the properties of any of the hosts, and select storage, I can see all of the shared storage LUNs in the list, but they all have a status of Reserved. When I select the Hardware tab, I can see all of the LUNs and they have the Available for placement box enabled. How can I set this storage to online so I can deploy VMs to them?

Thanks

Hi,

I am running VMM server powershell scripts from C# code. First thing I am doing is "Get-VMMServer" to get the SCVMM connection. This command is same in all powershell scripts and I want to avoid it.

Can Get-VMMServer be called only once and use the same connection in all powershell script execution?

VM Guest Agent within VM corrupted

$

Within the VM (regular vm nothing special) - the event logs show error id: 7031 - the service "Microsoft System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager Guest Agent R2" terminated unexpectedly. On VMM and Hyper-V Host where the VM is running on I see no error.

So I want to install the VMM guest agent in the VM again. I do not see any VMM Guest Agent service nor do I see a vmm guest agent in "installed programs" within the VM. On the VMM server - in the agent folder - I see the vmmguestagent.msi file. I want to copy it into the VM and start it within the VM. Is there anything I should be aware of? I searched the web and did not find anything about the vmm guest agent within a VM - I found things for the "regular" VMM agent for hosts/library server but nothing on those vmm guest agents installed in a vm. So I want to be sure if there is something I should be aware of when installing the vmm guest agent in the vm.

SCVMM Library share using SMB 3.0 on Netapp array - Supported??

We are planning to use SMB 3.0 from Netapp array for shared storage for Hyper-V cluster via SCVMM.

Can we use SMB 3.0 share created on netapp array for Library share too ? is this supported? is there any drawback if we should not configure or use a SMB 3.0 share from netapp array for library share purpose?

Does the library share should always be hosted on windows server? cant it be directly used from a SMB 3.0 share presented via array like netapp?

Could you suggest the supported scenario for hosting library share over SMB 3.0 from Netapp/ or any array that supported SMB 3.0

I am trying to determine the cause of errors deploying new VMs to a host. Some discussions suggested that the VMMCA might be able to shed light on the cause of the problem.

In trying to use VMMCA, I am getting several errors in the report, but I am not convinced that they represent actual problems, and I am beginning to suspect that VMMCA is perhaps outdated.

Any opinions on that?

-

The original error I am trying to eliminate is this:

Error (2915). The Windows Remote Management (WS-Management) service cannot process the request. The object was not found on the server

-

In VMMCA I get this error for every server (VMM management, hosts, library):

“No required update or hotfix information exists for [server]

The VMMCA does not have a list of required hotfixes for the operating system of the specified server.

VMM may not function correctly or at all with the specified server (note that this does not apply to the VMM console, as the console can be installed in client operating systems and therefore this rule can be ignored).

If the computer is being used or will be used for any of the VMM server roles: host, library, PXE server, WSUS server, or VMM management server, ensure that it has a supported server operating system (Windows Server 2008 or a later version).”

All of the servers are running Windows Server 2012 R2 with all available updates from Windows Update.

I cannot find anywhere a list of recommended updates and hotfixes for VMM 2012 R2. So how should VMMCA be able to do this?

-

I also get this error in the VMMCA report for every host:

“The WMI virtualization store is in an unhealthy state on [server]

The Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) virtualization store did not respond appropriately to a basic health test on the specified server.

VMM may not function correctly or at all with the specified server. You may see a "Not Responding" message in the VMM console or VMM operations on the server may fail.

Resolution:

1. Verify that the WMI service is running on the specified server by running the command net start winmgmt at a command prompt using elevated privileges

2. Ensure that the WMI virtualization store is in a healthy state on the specified server. To check the integrity of or to repair the virtualization store, run the command winmgmt /salvagerepository at a command prompt using elevated privileges

3. Ensure that all Hyper-V management services are in healthy state if the server is being used or will be used as a host. You may need to restart the following Hyper-V services: Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management, Hyper-V Image Management, and Hyper-V Networking Management.”

With regard to the 3 steps for resolution:

  1. The WMI service is already running, so no point in net start.
  2. I do not want to run winmgmt /salvagerepository unless I am certain something is wrong. I tried winmgmt /verifyrepository which says “WMI repository is consistent”. So I think it looks ok despite the error.
  3. Again: I do not want to restart these services. There are vm’s running, which do important work. And I have rebooted the servers multiple times lately.

-

And finally I get this one error:

“VMM SPNs are incorrectly registered for [server name]

The Service Principal Names (SPNs) that VMM requires were not correctly registered when the VMM management server was set up on the specified server. This is a known issue in System Center 2012 – Virtual Machine Manager.

The VMM console may not be able to connect to the VMM management server and/or deploying a Hyper-V host to a bare-metal computer may not work.

Resolution:

Manually add the SPNs that are required by VMM by running the following commands as an administrator at an elevated command prompt:

1. setspn -S SCVMM/yourmachine -U domain\account

2. setspn -S SCVMM/yourmachine.fqdn.com -U domain\account”

The text mentions VMM 2012 – not VMM 2012 R2. So I am not convinced that it is a good idea to try to add the SPNs manually without verifying that something is actually wrong.

SMI-S Provider of SCVMM Development Issue

Hi, Everyone,

Work for a storage vendor, currently I have a problem in SMS-S provider development of SCVMM.

SMI-S Provider works well when testing in VMM 2012 R2 with PowerShell 3. However, when evaluating our provider by using VMM 2012 R2 with PowerShell 4. our StoragePool is not recognized by VMM server. for example, VMM could recognize our provider contains one array. When switch page to Fabric->Storage->Arrays, the Pools field displays that the array manages no pool.”

this issue has been blocked for months. we have tried many methods, but still cannot find a solution.

Please help if possible

Thanks

Cluster Live Storage Migration completes without deleting the source virtual hard disk VHDX

Testing HV setup in a cluster of two nodes with shared FC storage.  Storage is CSV on both nodes.  Storage migration of a VM from C:\ClusterStorage\A to C:\ClusterStorage\B completes without any problem.  Upon completion, the source VHDX are still left at C:\ClusterStorage\A.  The source files can be deleted manually.  All is done through VMM "Migrate Storage" option.  Why the storage migration does not delete the source files upon job completion?  Thanks!

VMM Logical Switch Hide from Host

Hello, I've created uplink port profile and logical switch, applied it to a Hyper-V host. Now the question is how do I hide it from operating system. I have another team for cluster traffic and management and I don't want VMM to manage that team. So I want VMM to manage only guest VM hyper-v switch and I want that switch to be hidden from the host OS. Do I have to do it on the host directly or I can do it with VMM? I can't seem to find anything relevant.

Funny thing is, the logical switch doesn't appear on the hardware tab of the Hyper-V host, is this by design?

The data above this text is pseudorandom, brace yourselves.

New Version of SCVMM?

Hello All,

For anybody in the know, are there any plans for an overhaul of the current System Center Virtual Machine Manager R2 in terms of a refresh of the management console interface, operation, increased levels of functionality, etc. in the coming future? One of my biggest complaints with Hyper-V has been the lack of holistic management capabilities within SCVMM. Current Hyper-V environments still require at a *minimum* the use of 3 different consoles on each individual Hyper-v host: Hyper-V Management MMC, the Cluster Management MMC and Disk Management MMC. I am really hoping to see a revised SCVMM version that consolidates all pertinent Hyper-V operations under a single console, like and has been the case with vCenter since its infancy. Also an improvement in the responsiveness and efficiency of such a critical piece of management.

We are looking at a Hyper-V deployment of 8-12 hosts and about 300 VM's. However I am concerned about the increase in overall management for this environment. I would like that piece of mind in knowing that Microsoft is addressing the current level of disparity and lack of efficiency in its *centralized* management of Hyper-V environments.

Anybody able to share some good news??

Error (2912): "An internal error has occurred trying to contact the server: NO_PARAM: NO_PARAM

To All,

I’m attempting to migrate VMs between Hyper-V 2012 R2 host with SCVMM 2012 UR7. Some VMs migrate with no errors and others fail with the error below.

We were getting the following Error in the VMM Jobs while trying to migrate a VM to a new host:

Error (2912): "An internal error has occurred trying to contact the <HOST_NAME> server: NO_PARAM: NO_PARAM

 Unknown error (0x80072f0d)

 Recommended Action

Ensure the agent is installed and running. Ensure the WS-Management service is installed and running, then restart the agent.

They are being migrated from the same source host to the same target host…but some fails and the other doesn’t… Is there anyone seen this?

John

Managing HV cluster nodes through VMM 2012 R2

Hi

We completed the installation of System center suit (SCCM / SCOM / VMM). We have more than 30 HV hosts in 4 HV clusters (for SAP Prod / Dev / App Prod/ dev), as of now all the hosts are configured with converged networks. Later we will upgrade the networks with 10Gb NICs and multiple NICs (split) will be configured at BIOS level and will remove the converged NICs.

Here our concern is shall we start adding the HV cluster nodes to VMM to manage them (there is no settings / configurations done with VMM), all HV servers are Windows 2012 R2 std or Datacenter editions. Once we done with the NIC up-gradation we will start configure the templates for NICs with VMM (since we are beginners with VMM we will add the needed templates / configurations based on requirements)

Thanks in advance

"There is not enough disk space on the available volumes" when trying to live migrate with SMB3 shared storage

$

I have 6 Hyper-V hosts (all windows 2012 R2) managed by VMM 2012 R2.

The all use the same File Share on the same File Server (Windows 2012 R2) for all of their storage.

Live Migration from VMM Console between these hosts usually works like a charm.

I just tried to live migrate a vm with a very large vhdx-file located on the file share. VMM complained in the placement dialog that "There is not enough disk space on the available volumes". It correctly quoted the size of the vhdx file and the free space on the file server and refused to allow the migration because the vhdx was larger that the free space.

Why does this happen? It does not need any additional space since it will just leave the files in place and move memory between the hosts.

It was urgent, so I freed up some space and was then able to complete the migration.
