2012 R2 Console Hanging Not Connecting

$

I'm experiencing an issue where after installing the SCVMM 2012 R2 console, the console is unable to connect to the VMM server. The console is on the same version and update release and the server name and port information are entered correctly. The console opens and after clicking connect it tries to connect and the splash screen comes up for the console but then that's it. I can leave it open for hours and it'll never connect. I've monitored it with process monitor and the console is indeed still active and trying to connect but it never loads. This issue occurs on multiple machines. Some are able to connect and some are not. I've tried running as administrator and adjusting the security for the Microsoft System Center 2012 R2\Virtual Machine Manager\bin\AddInPipeline folder. Any thoughts on what may be causing the issue?

NVGRE - Policy refresh failed with error

$

We have lot of NVGRE gateway clusters in our environment - currently 15 with 50 networks on each.

In VMM job "Update the Hyper-V Network Virtualization Policy" always ends with error like this:

Warning (50074)

Policy refresh failed with error: nvgrevmcluster10 Execution of Microsoft.SystemCenter.NetworkService::UpdateCustomerAddressRecord on the configuration provider 4ee559f1-f479-480c-9458-d14b8b1c1779 failed. Detailed exception: Microsoft.VirtualManager.Utils.CarmineException: Policy refresh failed with error: The HyperV network virtualization policy update failed on gateway host (nvgrehost1.domain). DetailedErrorMessage (The WS-Management service cannot complete the operation within the time specified in OperationTimeout.).

If the error repeats and the server is responding, adjust GatewayPolicyUpdateTimeout registry value and try the operation again.

I noticed that "nvgrehost1.domain" points to currently passive host, but not sure is it always like this. But I'm sure that any failed job in VMM is abnormal :)

I can't find reasons and misconfigurations that can cause this error. Any suggestions?

SCVMM 2012 SP1 with Windows 2012 R2 Hypervisor check point issues

hi

i have Windows 2012 R2 Hypervisor with SCVMM 2012 SP1(RTM) on Windows 2012 R2 Server, when i try to create checkpoint for VM from SCVMM, backend it will create checkpoint, but SCVMM job says it's failed (with running state), if you shutdown VM and take checkpoint from SCVMM, it will create from SCVMM,

as i found, if we have SCVMM 2012 R2, this will fix ( with Windows 2012 R2 Hypervisor), but is there any rollup for SCVMM 2012 SP1 to fix it issue .

thank you

SCVMM Bare Metal Deployment - Unable to configure BCD record on physical computer

Hi All,

I am stumped on this one, I am trying to perform a bare metal deployment of a Hyper-V server using SCVMM.

The server successfully PXE boots, performs deep discovery, downloads the VHD file and expands it.

The job fails with error:

Error (21114)
Unable to configure BCD record on physical computer D8BFA327-ADD6-DF11-1000-00000000001C.

Recommended Action
Verify that the physical computer profile and the physical computer information match.

On the physical server itself in the log file you can see:

0650.0610::09/28-15:57:59.031#00:exceptions.cpp(97)[000000000238CF: CarmineException::CarmineException: CarmineError: 21114,  hr: 0x8099527a

Above it in the log, I can see this error:

0650.0610::09/28-15:57:57.780#11:FindVolume.cpp(72): FindVolumes, Failed to IOCTL_STORAGE_GET_DEVICE_NUMBER to [\\?\Volume{d9b257fc-684e-4dcb-ab79-03cfa2f6b750}]

Some details:

Using SCVMM 2012 R2 RU6 on Windows Server 2012 R2
Physical Server is a UCS Blade M2 B200
Storage is Boot from SAN connected via Fiber to a EMC Clariion.

I originally thought this might be due to the physical disk appearing multiple times and WinPE does not support MPIO. I have dropped the number of paths down to 1 so the disk is only showing once for the server.

Does anyone have any ideas why it might be failed at the BCD start stage?

Thanks

SCVMM 2012 (not R2) High Bandwidth Traffic

$

we've windows server 2008R2 installed with scvmm 2012 standard (not R2).

From monitoring tool that we have, SCVMM server shows very high network traffic >5MB and this continues to rise.

The Traffic coming from multiple client with port 5985.
I have read the same problem, and the solution is to install rollupdates 6. But I use SCVMM 2012 is not 2012R2

Anyone know why this happens? is this the same bug that occurs in VMM 2012r2?

Compliance scan fails

I have SCVMM 2012 R2 running on Windows Server 2012 R2; the host servers are 2012 R2 as well.  I have established a baseline and done compliance scans without issue in the past.  However, I have now added additional items into the baseline and now, after a long timeout period, get the following when I try to do a compliance scan on any host.

Error (2931)
VMM is unable to complete the request. The connection to the VMM agent on the virtualization server (host.domain.com) was lost.
Unknown error (0x80338029)

Recommended Action
Ensure that the Windows Remote Management (WS-Management) service and the VMM agent are installed and running and that a firewall is not blocking HTTPS traffic.

This can also happen due to DNS issues. Try and see if the server (host.domain.com) is reachable over the network and can be looked up in DNS. You can ping the virtualization server from VMM management server and make sure that the IP address returned matches the IP address locally obtained from the virtualization server.

If the error still persists, restart the virtualization server, and then try the operation again.

The firewall is disabled on the SCVMM server and the host servers.  I have verified there are no DNS issues and that WS-Management is running.  I have rebooted all servers.  I have even removed the baseline and created an entirely new baseline, but always get the same error.  Anyone seen this issue?

Pieces of SCVMM Configuration Lost/Missing in GUI?

$

I setup SCVMM about 2 months ago.  I logged into to create a VM using one of our templates and I noticed we are missing huge pieces of our configuration.  An entire host group for our Training network and the below example.

I had Hyper V Replica Setup for one of our VM's and this entire configuration in VMM is 'gone.'  However when I attempt to add it back again 'GSCloud' as seen in the screenshot.  It says it already exists.  Well it clearly doesn't exist in the GUI.  I am not familiar enough with PS to troubleshoot and I would be more than happy to with some direction.

I only keep backups for about a month so whatever state this was working in is far gone.

Any ideas of how to recover or if others have seen this before?

VM when deployed in scvmm using SMB 3.0, do we have to make it highly available manually or there is any settings that needs to be enabled??

Using SCVMM 2012 R2, Hyper-V 2012 R2 Cluster, SMB 3.0 storage.

When deployed using cloud, the VM is created in SMB share but when i see the properties of the VM, it is not configured to be Highly available by default.

When i try to live migrate, i get the option to make it highly available.

How can we make the VM to deployed as highly available as a DEFAULT OPTION. As we are already deploying in a cluster, exception was to be deployed as a HA VM.

Hello,

I am trying to install System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 in a Hyper-V 2012 R2 environment, and when I run the analyzer, I get this alert:

Category: Prerequisite
Source: hyper-1
Issue: The above issue was found about Windows Remote Management (WinRM) on the specified server.
Impact: The specified server cannot be used for VMM server roles such as host/library/PXE server/WSUS server/VMM management server.
Resolution: On the specified server:
1. Verify that the WinRM service is present and running by running the command net start winrm at a command prompt using elevated privileges
2. Run the command winrm id at an elevated command prompt, verify that no error is received, and that Stack=2.0
3. Run the command winrm qc at an elevated command prompt.

The verify output indicates that I am running Stack=3.0. My question is, if I uninstall WinRM 3.0 will it automatically revert to WinRM 2.0

SCVMM 2012 High Bandwidth Utilization

I've got a SCVMM 2012 (no R2 no SP1) running on Windows Server 2008 R2, and has been running for about 17 months. Last month i've been contacted by our administrator that the traffic is so high.

When we take a look at it, there are so many traffic went to port 5985 and from port 5985 (WinRM port).

I've been searching the solution in technet, the best explanation and solution is for SCVMM 2012 R2 by installing rollup update 6 (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3050317 issue 11). Because i've been using a non-R2 product, i think the solution is not compatible with my SCVMM Server.

Is there any solution for my case?

Thank you.

And here i attach wireshark results, my SCVMM Server IP is 10.234.1.81

SCVMM appearance

Does anyone know how to change the appearance of the SCVMM console?  For some reason it is showing up in a light grey theme, which makes it hard to read the text.  How do I switch it back to the dark skin?

VMM managed Cluster's logs missing ?

$

Hi,

We've recently commissioned VMM into our environment and imported our cluster into VMM. Nothing much have been done yet but somehow we notice after adding the cluster into VMM the failover cluster event log is getting purge automatically from time to time (Applications & Services Log > Microsoft >Windows > Failover Clustering). I tried extending the log size & change it to archive logs and do not overwrite old events but it's still the same.

I'm not sure if this behavior is from VMM but the biggest change I've did to the cluster is just adding the cluster to VMM only really.

Appreciate your advice!

Scripting doesn't remove temporary template or profile

I'm attempted to automate creating some VMs from templates. I went through the steps in the GUI and then copied the script at the end. When I run this script, it creates a hardware profile as well as a new template, but then it leaves them in the library. When I run through the GUI, there is not a hardware profile or template in the library. When I look at the logs, it shows another step "remove resources" that is deleting the profile and template. Does anyone know why the copied script doesn't do this?

Errors during VM migration

$

Hi,

I have an SCVMM 2012 R2 instance (with CU1), and when I perform a VM migration I get a status of Completed w/ Info

In the details pane of the Jobs window I have 9 errors and a warning every time

Error 23801 - No available connection to selected VM Network can be found

Error 23810 - There is no host NIC with required classification

Error 23806 - All available ports on switch extenstion has been used

Error 23808 - All available ports on port profile has been used

Error 23807 - The switch extension has reached maximum supoprted ports on this host

Error 23809 - The port profile has reached maximum support ports on this host

Error 23811 - Ports are not available for VM Subnet

Error 23825 - The virtual machine requires a logical switch connection and the host network adapter is not attached to a logical switch or operating sytem doesn't support logical switch

Error 23753 - The virtual machine or tier load balancer configuration requires an IP pool and there are no appropraite IP pools accessible from the host

Warning 23830 - Unable to find compliant logical switch

Even with all of these warnings the migrated VM works just fine.

In our environment we are using a layer 3 switch with VLANs, so I have a logical network using the 'VLAN-based independent networks' option, with two sites

Each site has an assoicated VLAN ID, and IP subnet

I've created a logical switch (without SR-IOV), using only the Microsoft Windows Filtering platform extension

The uplink on the logical switch is not a team, and has a port profile associated with the host group including all my Hyper-V hosts, and including all sites from the logical network

The virtual port on the logical switch has High bandwidth and medium bandwidth port classifications associated

I have VM Networks created for each of the sites on my logical network

The network configuration on my VM is as follows:

Connected to a VM network, enable VLAN

IP address is greyed out as Static IP (from a static IP pool) - This was configured as Dynamic at creation time as I do not use IP pools

  MAC address is dynamic

Virtual switch - using the logical switch mentioned above and High Bandwidth classification

The hosts have a dedicated interface on a trunked network port for VM data. Available for placement is checked, used by management is not (as i have a dedicated interface for that)

It has the logical network mentioned above assigned, and all IP sites are shown with their VLAN IDs

I believe I have everything configured correctly (after all the VM works correctly regardless of which host is running it), but i still see these errors during a VM migration

Has anybody seen this before, or have any pointers to resolving them?

The hosts are Server 2012 R2 Datacenter and the VM is Server 2012 R2 Standard

Thanks,

Phil

Use VMM to Set "enable virtual hard disk sharing"

$

Hi,

Is it possible to use VMM/Powershell to set "enable virtual hard disk sharing" property for a virtual hard disk? I know the Failover Cluster Manager can set this but I would like to use VMM/Powershell for this. the virtual hard disk is located on a scaled-out file server cluster on a smb share. The smb share is controlled by vmm.

Thanx for helping me.

DJITS.

Manual migration no longer shows Live as a transfer type

$

Major power outage and a unsaved switch config led to the Live Migration and Cluster Communication networks dropping off of our secondary site. After rectifying the problem by re-creating the VLANs on the switch and restoring communication on those networks, SCVMM would not let me migrate normally. The transfer type in the Migratm VM Wizard shows "cluster" on 2 nodes and "network" on the current host. I ran the cluster validation in failover cluster manager and it showed VMs in an offline state. Any idea what i may be missing?

SCVMM Network Migration Query

Hi Frenz,

I have a Query regarding SCVMM Networking concept. My SCVMM Environment,

Version:      SCVMM 2012 R2
No. of Agent: 25 (standalone SCVMM Host - Win 2008 Server) + 6Node Cluster (Newly added Win2012 R2 DC edt)

I recently added my new 6 Node cluster to SCVMM and started migrating 70 VM running on stanalone Hyper-V Hosts (25). I trunked my New Hyper-V cluster host switch (XYZ) to allow all VLAN ID's in 25 Hyper-V Host. So far I migrated 5 VM's using Hyper-V Replica and in SCVMM I have added the Subnet site for all the 25 Hyper-V Host VLAN ID's and Subnet details to New Host Logical Network.

All the 05 VM's are started and running fine, but unable to ping the same not even the gateway from Self. Kindly suggest me a solution. If there any other better way to migrate the Network from Old to New Host.

Are System Center VMM Update Rollups Cumulative?

$

Hi,

We've had this long running argument for years now on whether Microsoft Update Rollups are cumulative.

Part of our team believes they are while the other part thinks otherwise.

Adding confusion is the varied internet articles that aren't sure either. There are articles that say Microsoft Update Rollups ARE cumulative for some products while others seem to refute this.

Where it concerns VMM 2012 R2, we've been running Update Rollups at customer sites with the assumption that they ARE cumulative. For example, we recently installed Update Rollup 7 on a System Center VMM 2012 R2 UR5 installation with the assumption that the fixes for UR6 are already included in UR7.

Could someone for Microsoft settle this once-and-for all for all of us.

1. Are System Center VMM 2012 R2 Update Rollups Cumulative?

2. Are Microsoft Update Rollups in General Cumulative?

Thank you in advance for the feedback.
