Script for complete VM inventory

$

Hi,

We have a 5 Node HyperV cluster on 2012 R2 with VMM 2012 R2. I am trying to find a script which will give me a complete inventory of my VMs. The problem the basic details i can get by get-vm command, however to get teh details of VHD with their size is a problem. I can see the Get-VM also gives the total size, but thats not teh correct. If teh Disk is dynamically expanding this total size gives teh as of now size and not the total allocated space. This then creates issue while in planning. I can see that teh get-virtualharddisk command gives the disk type and actual and max size of teh disk, but not the VM name so that i can map that info to the output of get-vm.

Can anyone please help me on this....

I have a strange issue with Hyper-V SCVMM 2012 SP1. "Enabled VlanID" is greyed out if I take VM properties in SCVMM 2012 SP1. But at the same time I am able to change it in Hyper-V host! strangely it doesn't happen to all VMs! Any help is appreciated as google doesn't give me any fruitful answer. appreciate your great support.

HA VMM on a multi-subnet failover cluster

Hi,

We have 2 datacenters and want to built a high available VMM infrastructure.
Each datacenter has its own subnet with stretched VLAN so we are going to built a Geo-cluster with a fileshare witness on a third site.

I can't find any information about this is a supported configuration or not.  Although I think this is a true business case for a lot of companies.
Has anybody implemented a HA VMM on a geo-cluster?

Kr,

Hi All,

I am setting up SCVMM 2012 R2 in a production environment. Whenever I restart the SCVMM virtual machine the VMM service doesn't start automatically, I have to manually start it. I checked the VMM logs and in the event viewer i find the below error,

Service cannot be started. Microsoft.VirtualManager.DB.CarmineSqlException: Unable to connect to the VMM database. Ensure that the SQL Server is running and configured correctly. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot open database "VirtualManagerDB" requested by the login. The login failed. I added the 'VMMSVC' account as db_owner and sysadmin and also NT_Authority\System with same permissions still the service doesn't start on the start up.

I googled a lot and I find the threads with the error containing "General failure" but not with the above. Can someone please help me to find out why this error is occuring.

Thanks,

Ravi

Importing .ISO files into SCVMM2012 R2 - Folder Naming Quirk

$

We've run into a folder naming issue in regards to importing .ISO's into the VMM Library. When specifying a folder to import the .ISO into, VMM adds %20 to the folder names where spaces are. Not a huge deal but wonder if anyone has a way around this without using dashes or underscores.

Capacity missing from Overview page on SCVMM 2012 R2

I was playing around with System Center and testing it out in my LAB and first tried SCVMM 2012 SP1. On this version you could see on the cluster Overview page bar graphs for the Total Memory, Total CPU/Cores, etc graphs for the entire cluster.

I installed and using SCVMM 2012 R2 and this seems to be missing on the Overview page. Only the "Summary" is there and not the capacity information.

Did Microsoft take this out or is something messed up?

Problem with library vhd not showing when imported

Hi,

I have some imported VHDs on my SCVMM 2012 R2 library share, in the VHDs folder (Same server). However, one VHD was imported but did not show so I re-imported and overwrote the resource, but it still does not show?

This is in the VHDs pane in Library.

Please advise.

Error 2910

Hi I use Microsoft Test Manager to deploy lab machines in an SCVMM environment. The environment only has one host, which is the same server as the VMM machine. If I try to deploy VM templates everything works fine right away. When I deploy a VM based on a stored VM (not a VM template) I always get an error on the SCVMM server "Error 2910 VMM does not have appropriate permissions to access the resource on the server.domain.com server." When I click repair afterwards in Test Manager it tries to deploy the VM again and then the operation succeeds. Any ideas what causes this error each time?

I already tried giving all server accounts and service accounts permissions on all folders from the libarry and machines. It creates all files but fails just before (or in) step 1.6 "Create network adapter." I enabled tracing while creating the VMM and noticed there is an access denied for remote management. I already reconfigured all permissions, firewall and other settings for winrm. Here is the output from the trace with the error:

Live Migration Slow - Maxes Out

$

Hi everyone...

I have a private 10GB network that all of my Hyper-V hosts are connected to.  I have told VMM to use this network for live migrations.

Using performance monitor, I see that the migration is using this private network.  Unfortunately, it will only transfer at 100MB per second.

There must be a parameter somewhere to say "Use all the bandwidth you need...."

It is worth mentioning that I also backup the virtual machines using this same network to our backup server, and the transfer rates goes to 10GB per second.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Error 2409 in VMM 2012

Hi

I have the following setup:

3 Node Hyper-V 3.0 (Server 2012) Cluster

2 Node SOFS Cluster (Server 2012)

VMM 2012

I am trying to clone a virtual machine in VMM, when I come to selecting the path for the virtual machine I select one of the folders on our SOFS and click next but get the following error:

The Specified path is not a valid folder path on hostname.domain.local

Specify a valid folder path on hostname.domain.local which the virtual machine will be saved on

ID: 2409

There is a super-duper helpful KB here which basically says put the VM on highly available storage rather than the local drive on the HV host - I am using a SOFS share which is highly-available.  I can't find much information beyond that pertaining to this error...

Steps I have taken to troubleshoot:

  • Tried a different Hyper-V Host
  • Tried a different SOFS Share
  • Restarting VMM
  • Tried making a VM rather than cloning

Last week I was creating VMs to my heart's content.  I have not installed any updates or changed and configurations since last week.

Many thanks

I am trying to upgrade the VMM agent on SCVMM 2012 from 3.1.6011.0 to 3.1.6027.0. When I run the update I get 'access denied" on the VMM console. In the system error log on the Hyper-V server is see error message:

The VMMAgentInstaller service terminated with service-specific error %%-2146041839.

I verified that the userid I was using was in the local administrator's group. I tried using other userid's and got the same message. I successfully update the agent on five other servers with no problem, and I can't see any difference between the servers.

VMM 2012 R2 errors with offline WSUS

Current Situation:

I currently have a setup with SCVMM 2012 R2 and multiple Hyper-V hosts (2012 R2). I have a WSUS server up and running and connected to VMM and have created baseline etc and it works ok.

The WSUS server is offline (not connected to the internet) and I manually copy metadata and updates. This works ok and the other servers using this WSUS are receiving the latest updates with no problems.

The Problem:

When I go to create a new baseline to include the new updates they are not shown for selection. The only updates available are the ones from when the WSUS server was first added. When I select syncronise this fails as the WSUS server is trying to connect to the internet to update! VMM does not seem to see the latest WSUS catalog.

Is this something simple or an oversight with the WSUS configuration?

Hi,

i tried creating a new Virtual Machine with Win7 ultimate OS in SCVMM. But, i am getting the following error, i have downloaded the

en_windows_7_ultimate_with_sp1_x64_dvd_u_677332.iso     file from the microsoft site.

Please, help to resolve this.

Guest VM's missing completely from Cluster in SCVMM 2012R2, but fine on Host Nodes cluster.

Hi, I am running SCVMM 2012R2, all seems fine.!

But, I just noticed that from the Hyper-V hosts I have 88 roles. and in SCVMM I have 85 Roles, 3 guests are missing.

I have run refresh cluster, and refresh virtual machines, but they do not appear, I can live migrate them on the cluster no problems.

in SCVMM I do get this error though when I live migrate on the nodes.

Error (801)
VMM cannot find VM object c2c476a2-e76e-4d1d-a9e4-dffed475abd5.

Recommended Action
Ensure the library object is valid, and then try the operation again.

I could try and remove the cluster and re-add it, but that is the last resort.!!

any ideas.

many thanks

Mark

migrate or clone from 2012 host to 2008R2

Hi

We have a hostgroup  where we added a single 2012 server. The rest are 2008R2. We are planning to upgrade all hosts to 2012R2.

The problem is now that machines created on the 2012 host can only be running on that host, so its not possible to migrate to the old hosts. is it possible somehow to remove the integration services or whatever that blocks this downgrade?

Thanks

When setting up converged network in VMM cluster and live migration virtual nics not working

$

Hello Everyone,

I am having issues setting up converged network in VMM.  I have been working with MS engineers to no avail.  I am very surprised with the expertise of the MS engineers.  They had no idea what a converged network even was.  I had way more experience then these guys and they said there was no escalation track so I am posting here in hopes of getting some assistance.

Everyone including our consultants says my setup is correct.

What I want to do:

I have servers with 5 nics and want to use 3 of the nics for a team and then configure cluster, live migration and host management as virtual network adapters.  I have created all my logical networks, port profile with the uplink defined as team and networks selected.  Created logical switch and associated portprofle.  When I deploy logical switch and create virtual network adapters the logical switch works for VMs and my management nic works as well.  Problem is that the cluster and live migration virtual nics do not work.  The correct Vlans get pulled in for the corresponding networks and If I run get-vmnetworkadaptervlan it shows cluster and live migration in vlans 14 and 15 which is correct.  However nics do not work at all.

I finally decided to do this via the host in powershell and everything works fine which means this is definitely an issue with VMM.  I then imported host into VMM again but now I cannot use any of the objects I created and VMM and have to use standard switch.

I am really losing faith in VMM fast.

Hosts are 2012 R2 and VMM is 2012 R2 all fresh builds with latest drivers

Thanks

Refreshing VM Checkpoint Information

One of my Admins decided to rename all of the VM Snapshot names directly in the Hyper-V Manager.  In SCVMM, after Refreshing the Host, I still don't see the Snapshot/Checkpoint names being updated.  Anyone with any ideas?

Thanks,

Jason
