Removed Host from VMM. Still tries to Refresh Performance Data

$

We recently added a host to our VMM 2012 R2-environment. It was a stand-alone Windows 2008 R2 Server running Hyper-V with only one VM on it. After we migrated the last Virtual Machine to one of the hosts in our 2012 R2 cluster we removed the server from the VMM-console via the Delete option.

All is good and well and everyting works as expected, except for the fact that we get error messages from failed jobs when our VMM tries to Refresh Performance Data for the removed server.

Error (401)

Virtual machine host 5d0ceb69-6e2d-40ed-b4f8-ddf68d466199 is not associated with this VMM management server.

Recommended Action
Check the virtual machine host name and then try the operation again.

The GUID above is from the server that no longer exists in our environment and in the Job History we can see the actual server name for the old server under "Result Name". We can't find anytyhing in the GUI that still refers to that server or GUID though. How do we make it so that VMM stops trying to refresh performance data for this server?

Thanks in advance

Problem with VMM 2012 R2 console

I have VMM 2012 R2 console installed on the VMM server and on my laptop. In both cases it works correctly. I also installed the console on Windows 2012 R2 remote desktop machine. When I start it it opens correctly, I can for example see the list of VMs. But when I try connect to any VM through console I get the below error.

And when I try to open the properties of the VM the console crashes with error

Does anyone know the solution to any of these issues?

I have a 3 node Hyper-V cluster (hosts are Windows Server 2012 R1) managed by VMM 2012 R2. Is there any way to give specific users possibility to connect to console of specific VMs? From within VMM console, Hyper-V console, Failover Clustering console or any other method?

empty "Sysprep" folder after create VM from template

Hi,

We have created a template from WS2012R2 and when we create a VM from this template this process is successfull.

When we log in to the new VM, there is a folder c:\sysprep visible with no files in it.  How is this possible.  When sysprepping a normal physical PC the sysprep folder is removed together with the sysprep process.  Is this normal behavior? How to remove the folder after VM deployment?

Hi, I am running SCVMM 2008 R2 SP1 and want to upgrade to the Update Rollup 2, but I went to the web site for the KB 2691812.

and tried to run Windows Update, but can't find "Update Rollup 2"

So then I tried to download the update packages. I received an error when trying to install KB2701207:

The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch.

When I open SCVMM 2008 R2, I am running Version 2.0.4521.0 Service Pack 1

Thanks

SQL 2012 SP1 VMM Deployment

Is it even possible to deploy sql 2012 sp1 with vmm?

The below are the high level steps I followed.

1. Create VM with Windows Server 2012 R2
2. Prepare the SQL Server 2012 SP1 image and note down the instance id used
3. Sysprep the VHD (generalize, oobe)
4. Copy the Syspreped VHD into VMM Library
5. Create VM template and map the syspreped DVH
6. Under SQL Configuration, specify all the SQL Configuration details(use the same instance id that was given during sql image preparation)
7. Create the Service Template
8. Create the Service and deploy to cloud or host groups

Error (22703)
The SQL media configured on the template is not supported by Virtual Machine Manager. Virtual Machine Manager only supports SQL2008 and SQL2012 for SQL deployment.

Recommended Action
Fix the SQL media path to point to a valid setup location for SQL2008 or SQL2012

Just to clarify, VM gets created just fine, sql setup doesn't even start, the error above is everything I could find regarding this issue.

The media is at c:\sql on the VHD file, I used the same path in deployment options.

VMM 2012 R2 Error 26857

Hello Everyone,

I have VMM 2012 R2 configured and All the Hyper-v host Added to Fail-Over Cluster.

Most of the VMs are tag the VLAN ID and few of the VMs are without VLAN Tag. I have configured the Dynamic Optimization.

Every 10 minutesDynamic Optimization running and base on the load on the host VMs are moving to different host.

Problem is Vlan Tag VMs are not live migration different host While running the Dynamic Optimization. Rest of the VMs (with out vlan id )are moving  to different host.

Vlan Tag VMs are live migrating through Fail-over cluster and Through normal VMM live migration.

While running the Dynamic Optimization job VMs i'm getting below errors on VMM job.

Error (26857)

The VLAN ID (532) is not valid because the VM network (INTERNAL) does not include the VLAN ID in a network site accessible by the host.

Recommended Action

Either specify a valid VLAN ID, or do not specify a VLAN ID and a valid one will be assigned automatically.

Any one have any idea please let me know.

SCVMM 2012 R2 - Creating a SQL Service Template with multiple drives

$

Hi All,

I am currently in the process of putting together a SQL service template for a single tier. The installation of SQL is sysprepped and I have all of my INI files saved and configured as a SQL profile in SCVMM.  A requirement of SQL installations for this service is that logs, TempDB, and backup locations must be on separate disks for storage tiering.

This is where my problems start.

The SQL service will not complete and fails out when looking for directories on drives other than c:\. I created a diskpart script that onlines the various disks that sysprep removes and sets the proper drive letter structure, however, I cannot get it to run before the SQL customization.

Methods tried:

  1. Add diskpart script to GUIRunOnce - does not run before SQL - works when not deployed with sql
  2. Create application profile with pre-install parameters in the service template - does not run before sql - works when not deployed with sql
  3. Place required settings in windowsPE pass of unattend.xml - does not run or make changes to required drives.
  4. Add diskpart script to %WINDIR%\Setup\Scripts\SetupComplete.cmd - does not run before SQL

I have also had success with exporting and importing the MountedDevices key in the registry, but my problem is that I can't seem to run anything before the SQL portion of the template customization starts.

Does anyone have a method to properly run a script prior to the SQL sysprep customization ?

VMM user roll quotas messured as thin

$

Hi, I am interested to know if there is a way to make VMM manage user rolls quota's based on thin data (actual used) instead of thick (possible used). Also if there is a script to determine current user roll resource usage. I am really only interested in memory and Disk usage. It seems that VMM currently measures each vm a user creates as thick, which makes it very hard to over provision resources. VMM as of 2012r2 even measures memory as thick so powered off machines count against the users quota.

I use VMM to deliver lab space to engineers so I would like to use quotas to make sure they share resources evenly. Currently the quota's are not really usable unless there is an option to change the way they measure.

VMM 2012 R2 bare metal deployment downloading wrong VHDX-file

$

Hi!

I am experiencing total weirdness during bare metal deployment! The issue started after upgrading to update rollup 2 and causes the host to download the wrong VHDX during deployment. I have checked and rechecked the physical computer profile, and it points to the correct VHDX file, but it seems the host chooses a random VHDX file at step 1.2.5 in the deployment process. 1 out of 10 times it gets it right and chooses the correct file, but I'd like the system to be a bit more consistent than that :) With update rollup 1 installed it was rock solid and stuck to the settings in the physical computer profile, but now it seems to have a life of it's own.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues? Better yet, does anyone have a fix?

SCCM 2007 Migration to SCCM 2012

Hello,

I read http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/58ba35e5-d84e-4741-8089-624f5269a2ca/sccm-2012-design-consideration-advice?forum=configmanagergeneral&prof=required with the following notes:

Secondary vs. DP is a subjective call based on two factors: client count and available bandwidth. More clients and/or less bandwidths means secondary site, less clients and/or more bandwidth means DP. Both use a server OS so there's really no cost difference, just some added complexity for a secondary site. Without knowing the bandwidth, no way for me to be able to say one way or the other.
As for IBCM, correct, it's no a primary site server, it's simply a site system that typically hosts an MP, DP, and SUP. The App Catalog Website Point is also applicable.
Are you planning on managing legacy mobile devices or Mac OSX? If not, the Enrollment Proxy Point is not needed -- it's not applicable to IBCM anyway to my knowledge.
Also, the FSP must be on a separate site system so that clients can communicate with it via HTTP.

I have for now two site:

- 25,000 Desktops on one site

- 1,500 Servers on the second site

in SCCM 2007 I had three sites: One Parent doing the reporting and two child sites handling the inventory, distribution, etc... (No SUP do far)

I have on each child sites 1 DP.

What should be changed for SCCM 2012?

What is "More Clients" or "Less Clients" ?

"More Bandwidth" or "Less Bandwidth"?

Thanks,

Dom

VMM 2012 R2 licensing

$

Can someone please confirm what I fear/suspect: In System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager, I have to count ALL of the VMs - not the hosts - if I want to use the standard edition licenses.

We are a development shop, and so we have tons of vm's lying around for all kinds of testing purposes and for dormant projects. Most of them are off, but they are still there. We also move the vm's around a lot between hosts to utilize capacity properly.

Consequently, the natural replacement for my wonderful single SCVMM 2008 R2 Workgroup license, which covers any number of VMs on 5 hosts becomes 5 System Center 2012 R2 Datacenter licenses. Correct?

SCVMM 2008 R2 workgroup = I think it used to be about USD 500

5 x System Center 2012 R2 Datacenter = USD 18,035 on mla.microsoft.com

Please tell me I am wrong.

Please direct me towards authoritative information about how to license this type of setup in the system center 2012 world. (the system center 2012 R2 licensing data sheet does not answer this in a satifactory way - it just talks about "managed operation system environments" and for that I do not know whether I should count hosts or vm's with VMM).

Thanks.

Configuration Issues Relating to NIC - Azure Pack / VMM 2012 R2

Hi Guys,

I'm pulling my hair out here over this.

I'm new to Hyper-V / SCVMM, but I've followed Labs, and the guides that are available.

I've setup a Azure Pack POC Deployment, and all is fine, except one issue.

I'm unable to deploy a Virtual Machine on a Network that is Isolated, or Tenant Created.

If I deploy it on the Public VM Network, all is fine; Deploy it with no Network, All is fine.

But if i Deploy it on a Isolated or Tenant Created VM Network, I get the following Issue:

Error Message: Configuration issues related to the NIC with ID [06aa0af0-6f5d-4d7e-ae22-7f739e9f1ec7] of VM [160e9b86-7e58-4694-9a66-d1a07cdf8d83Configuration] prevent deployment. Recommended Action: Please contact your system administrator with this error ID.

I Have no idea on where to go with this now, Any Help would be greatly appreciated, before I'm bald with madness!

Thanks in advance,

Ethan

Multi-site HNV - gateway redundancy

$

Hello,

We have two data centres and are considering HNV to stretch our VM network across sites, in order to avoid re-addressing VMs on failover. The HNV gateway would be in forwarding mode with appropriate routes configured on an L3 switch. The data centres only have layer 3 connectivity so we can't stretch VLANs, but we can route PA subnets between sites. HNV would also permit us to leverage Azure for workloads in future. The data centres are considered primary and backup, and each has an internet connection and link to our MPLS

My question is around HNV gateway redundancy. Should the primary data centre fail, and that's where the HNV gateway is hosted, how can we restore connectivity to the HNV network?

1) Multiple HNV Gateway clusters (one per site)? Does SCVMM then use these in a round-robin fashion until one fails? Can multiple network services on a VM network be configured active/passive? Is Hyper-V/SCVMM intelligent enough to use a gateway on the same PA subnet as the hosts?

2) Multi-subnet cluster for the HNV gateway guest cluster? (e.g four nodes, two in one subnet, two in another). Will SCVMM have problems when the front-end IP is changed by the cluster?

I haven't seen much guidance around HNV gateways in a multi-site private cloud so any input would be appreciated.

Thanks
