I installed SCVMM 2012 R2 with all updates and copied over all the templates and iso and images from the SCVMM 2012 SP1 Server. All the paths and shares are the same as on the former server. All the VM's and cluster comes up no problem.

However, when I try to create a VM from template with a .VHDX extension I get the error:

VMM cannot locate an available physical instance of the equivalence group for the virtual hard disk with ID:

With VHD files I can create a VM from template no problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Bare-Metal OSD and Management interface static IP

$

Hello,

I'm setting up the bare-metal deployment on my infrastructure to deploy about 30 new HP BL460c G8 blades.

Everything work well except that the management interface does not get any IP from the management IP pool. Cluster and LiveMigration virtual interfaces get one without any problem.

After deployment, the management interface is set on DHCP. If I select after the deployment static ip from pool (as it is configured in the physical computer profile), VMM get an IP and it's done... but require an additional manual step.

Any idea ? Someone already met this bug on VMM 2012 R2 ?

Thank you
Best regards,

VMM 2012 SP1 - Default Placement Path

$

Hi,

We are using SC VMM 2012 SP1 and SC App Controller 2012 Sp1.

We use a 2 node cluster with shared storage.

My problem is that I can´t change the default path where the Virtual Machines get deployed to. It always defaults to C:\Clusterstorage\Volume1. It would be really nice to be able choose a subfolder. In properties of the HyperV hosts the Placement tab´s options are greyed out, so I can´t change it.

As we deploy with App Controller we can´t and don´t want to choose a path when deploying a VM.

Cheers!

How to check whether the NetworkService is added in VMM or not

In my C# application, I want to check if my NetworkService is added in VMM or not.

For this I am currently creating an instance of runspace and calling the “Get-SCNetworkService”.

But it is taking more than expected time (>4 seconds).

Is there any better way to check whether the NetworkService is added in VMM or not?

Hope anyone can give me a solution for that.

Thanks in advance,

Replace the faulty SCVMM 2012 R2 server

Hello

My SCVMM server seem broken ( http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/systemcenter/en-US/19714845-243d-4b10-b8f7-82f2df674553/create-run-as-accounts-error-635-unable-to-securely-store-the-password-information?forum=virtualmachinemanager#19714845-243d-4b10-b8f7-82f2df674553 ) so I tried to install it again.

But I cannot as it throw me error 1603 at the creatsslcert stage.

As I cant seem to re-isntall the server, I'm trying to add a new server to my domain and link it to the existing infrastructure.

However the setup throw me an exception:

Virtual Machine Manager cannot process the request because an error occurred while authenticating INFRA-SCVMM-01.VCLOUD.LU. Possible causes are:
1) The specified user name or password are not valid.
2) The Service Principal Name (SPN) for the remote computer name and port does not exist.
3) The client and remote computers are in different domains and there is not a two-way full trust between the two domains.
Log in by using an account on the same domain as the VMM management server, or by using an account on a domain that has a two-way full trust with the domain of the VMM management server, and then try the operation again. If this does not work, purge the Kerberos tickets on the VMM management server by using kerbtray.exe, available at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=17657. Then, reset the SPN for INFRA-SCVMM-01.VCLOUD.LU by using setspn.exe. If this still does not fix the problem, make INFRA-SCVMM-01.VCLOUD.LU a member of a workgroup instead of a domain, restart the computer, rejoin the domain, and then try the operation again.

What should I do to repair my SCVMM installation or continue with a new one keeping the existing DB?

Hello,

I'm running on SCVMM 2012 R2.

When I try to create a new Run As Accounts the jobs fail with the error

Virtual Machine Manager is unable to securely store the password informaiton on this machine.

Ensure that the Microsoft Cryptographic Service has been installed on the VMM management server and try the operation again.

ID: 635.

I have make no modification and the server run since month without problem. I have more than 30 run as account existing.

Now I have installed all the latest patch but without any success.

All I can find is to uninstall VMM and install it back, but this is only a last resort solution for me.

Where can I find more logs information on this issue?

Is this limitation by design? If we have a shared VHDX between two VMs, then I am not able to change the VM properties from SCVMM.

How to import Console Add-in programmatically in VMM?

Hello All,

In my C# application, I want to import Console Add-in.

To do this currently I am creating a folder structure with similar permissions as it was created during the import of Console Add-in from VMM UI.

But when I start the VMM, it shows the following error :

“Your personal add-ins folder is editable by users other than yourself and the Administrators group. This presents a potential security risk by which user could malicious code to be executed using your credential. Please check the following folder and remove any permission assigned to the other users.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012 R2\Virtual Machine Manager\Bin\AddInPipeline\Addins\SCVMMTESTING_Administrator ”

Is there any other way to import console add-in programmatically in VMM.

Below is the image for your reference-

SCVMM 2012 R2 RU2 - the vlan ID still not showing

Hello everyone,

I know that the VLAN ID not showing in the console was a bug reported after the migration from SCVMM 2012 SP1. We recently upgraded or SCVMM 2012 R2 RU1 to RU2 and after the upgrade we still face the issue. Is there something that I missed or something that I should do more?

Thanks

Checkpoints and Disk Space

$

I am trying to understand how checkpoints affect disk space for a virtual machine that is stored on our SAN. For example, we have a virtual machine that has (2) hard drives attached to it, both located on our SAN. It is my understanding that if I create a checkpoint (snapshot) of this machine, the existing .vhd files will essentially stop growing and two .avhd files will be created to continue growing in size with everything new that takes place from the time the checkpoint is taken. We have a mixture of dynamic disks and fixed disks in our virtual environment and my question is if on our EVA SAN we dedicate 80 GB to a particular hard drive and then when we create a virtual machine and point to that location on the SAN and tell the drive to be 70 GB in size and it is fixed, will the new .avhd file also use that dedicated 70 GB of space or will it create a file on the SAN, in the same location as the existing .vhd and only have the remaining 10 GB of space left to work with, which is reserved for memory and thus cause the virtual machine to crash because it is out of space? If using a fixed disk, do we need to allow more room on the SAN for that new file to grow or can it just utilize the existing space defined when creating the virtual machine in Virtual Machine Manager. I just know that typically when you have a fixed disk scenario and you look at the host it appears like it is full because the full 70 GB shows up as used, even though on the virtual machine itself it really is not used.

That leads to the second question, in a dynamic situation, if you say you want a 70 GB hard drive, it grows as it needs space, who does the checkpoint work there, does it use the same 70 GB you dedicated when building the machine or does it go to the SAN and start growing, thus taking away space from the 70 GB you dedicated, thus causing premature space issues?

Cannot create new SCVMM VM Template into a SCVMM Library share managed by a NetApp NAS storage managed by SMI-S Provider

$

Consider the following scenario:

I have the following systems up and running:

 A SCVMM Server (SCVMM 2012 R2 + RU2), fully patched (hostname: SCVMMSRV)
A NetApp NAS Storage correctly reached and managed using NetApp SMI-S Provider (DataONTAP 8.2P4, SMI-Provider 5.1)
(The CIFS Server if reachable at \\NAS.domain.local)
 A two-node Hyper-V Cluster (Windows Server 2012 R2 Update 1), fully patched (hostnames: HVSRV01A, HVSRV01B)

I also followed these configuration steps:

 I created and registered a NAS Share to the SCVMM Library Role exposed by the SCVMM Server itself (\\NAS.domain.local\VMMLibrary);
 I associated a new RunAs Account for the Library Management Credential (username: DOMAIN\scvmmLibrary);
I set on the NAS share full-control for both share and NTFS permissions to the following principals:

  The SCVMM Service account (DOMAIN\scvmmService);
  The SCVMM Library RunAsAccount (DOMAIN\scvmmLibrary);
  The SCVMM Server Computer Account (DOMAIN\SCVMMSRV$);
The Hyper-V Cluster Nodes Computer Accounts (DOMAIN\HVSRV01A$,DOMAIN\HVSRV01B$)

Then I created a new VM (testvm2) and placed it on a cluster Node; then have run the New VM Template wizard starting from the  VM itself, targeting the NetApp NAS share (path:\\NAS.domain.local\VMMLibrary\Templates).

During wizard execution the following error is raised:

"Error (20552)
VMM does not have appropriate permissions to access the resource \\NAS.domain.local\VMMLibrary\Templates\testvm2\Virtual Machines\3DEF07D0-86FA-4A81-869C-27A88673B847.xml on the SCVMMSRV.domain.local server.

Recommended Action
Ensure that Virtual Machine Manager has the appropriate rights to perform this action.

Also, verify that CredSSP authentication is currently enabled on the service configuration of the target computer SCVMMSRV.domain.local. To enable the CredSSP on the service configuration of the target computer, run the following command from an elevated command line: winrm set winrm/config/service/auth @{CredSSP="true"}"

Seems that SCVMMSRV lacks some kind of permission over the NAS share.

What kind of permissions are required on the share, the VMM Server, or Hyper-V Nodes to make sure that this scenario is working?

Check for Computer Name in Use on Domain before deployment

$

Hi,

We currently have VMM and App Controller running in testing, soon to be released to the business. However one of our testers created a VM from a template and specified a Computer name that already exists on the domain.

Is there any way to check before deployment? Preferably as the user is specifying a VM Name.

Options i am considering:

Triggering an Orchestrator Runbook to fail the deployment if the Computer name exists on the domain unless the deploying user is part of the Admin Group.

Having a service run that will detect a template being deployed and Fail the deployment if the Computer Name Exists unless the deploying user is part of the Admin Group.

Thanks alot for your help/suggestions.

Cannot create a VM in SCVMM 2012 R2

I have a new installation of SCVMM 2012 R2 (all updates) on 2012 R2 (all updates). Everything works fine except that I cannot create a VM from a VHDX.

I can create a VM, but once I associate it with an iso or a template with VHDX file - it fails. I can create a VM with VHD though but thats no help. Any idea why it wont work with VHDX?

- I removed hosts from the cluster and re-added them, installed all new VM agents on the hosts.

- Certificates from all hosts are on the VMM Server Cert Store in Trusted People store and valid.

- All hosts are in an "OK" status int he Fabric tab, the cluster has no errors and is OK.

- No errors in event viewer

Recommended Action
Check that WS-Management service is installed and running on server server.com. For more information use the command "winrm helpmsg hresult". If server.com is a host/library/update server or a PXE server role then ensure that VMM agent is installed and running. Refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2742275 for more details.

SCVMM Network Virtualization - simulate DMZ network inside network virtualization

$

Hi All,

Here is my question. Is the following scenario possible. HyperV 2012R2 hosts, SCVMM2012r2.

I create a new VM Network (with network isolation) and create VMs on that network (with SCVMM). I'll call this network Corpnet.

Is it possible to have a separate  network that is also virtualized that can act as the DMZ network for the Corpnet?

I'm having trouble to make this work. VM networks are working as expected.

1. I tried creating two separete VM networks and creating a VM that has two network interfaces on both VM networks with the RRAS role and LAN routing. But I cant make the traffic be routed from one VM Network to the other one. (in this example I change the gateway on the network cards for the VMs on the two VM Networkis to point to the VMRouter interfaces.)

2. I tried creating two VLANs on the same VM network . I use again a VM as a router. The traffic starts behaving weird and doesn't pass through the VMRouter but goes directly between the two VLANs. (in this example I change the gateway on the network cards for the VMs on the two VLANs to point to the VMRouter interfaces.)

I am trying to call a remote power shell command-let and converting into C# objects

Get-SCVirtualNetworkAdapter -All

One of the Response Object :

IPv4Addresses                              : {12.12.12.12}

And MemberType is

Deserialized.System.Collections.Generic.List`1[[System.String, mscorlib, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089]] Property

How to cast particular PSObject vNetworkAdapter.Members["IPv4Addresses"].Value into List<string> without using systemcenter assembly ?

VMM 2012 R2 licensing

$
0
0

Can someone please confirm what I fear/suspect: In System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager, I have to count ALL of the VMs - not the hosts - if I want to use the standard edition licenses.

We are a development shop, and so we have tons of vm's lying around for all kinds of testing purposes and for dormant projects. Most of them are off, but they are still there. We also move the vm's around a lot between hosts to utilize capacity properly.

Consequently, the natural replacement for my wonderful single SCVMM 2008 R2 Workgroup license, which covers any number of VMs on 5 hosts becomes 5 System Center 2012 R2 Datacenter licenses. Correct?

SCVMM 2008 R2 workgroup = I think it used to be about USD 500

5 x System Center 2012 R2 Datacenter = USD 18,035 on mla.microsoft.com

Please tell me I am wrong.

Please direct me towards authoritative information about how to license this type of setup in the system center 2012 world. (the system center 2012 R2 licensing data sheet does not answer this in a satifactory way - it just talks about "managed operation system environments" and for that I do not know whether I should count hosts or vm's with VMM).

Thanks.
