Why can't I assign hardware and guest os profiles to servers in the new SCVMM 2012 Service Templates?

$

Trying to learn SCVMM 2012, but I'm confused about how Guest OS and Hardware Profiles work with the new 2012 Service Templates.

I create a Hardware Profile and a Guest OS Profile. Then I open the Create VM Template wizard. In this wizard I can assign the Hardware and Guest OS profiles I created under the Configure Hardware and Configure Operating System steps in the wizard.

If I open the new Service Template wizard, select a Single Tier Server (for example), open the Service Template Designer and go to the properties of the server I find under Hardware Configuration and OS Configuration I cannot assign my Hardware and Guest OS profiles to the server.

Why is this? It seems like extra work to have not be able to assign these profiles to servers in a service template. Is there something fundamental I'm missing here?

Hi,

some of our VM's display an error: Incomplete VM configuration, the strage thing is that only a few vm's out of thens get the error

the status say's:

Error (2912)
An internal error has occurred trying to contact the nod6.synergium.eu server: NO_PARAM: NO_PARAM.

Recommended Action
Check that WS-Management service is installed and running on server node6.synergium.eu. For more information use the command "winrm helpmsg hresult". If node6.synergium.eu is a host/library/update server or a PXE server role then ensure that VMM agent is installed and running. Refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2742275 for more details.

We have two mail box servers,

We just move mailbox databases from one old VHD to another drive, but the replication service is not starting or sagging on both servers while we disconnected that old VHD. And the RPS service is started successfully once I reconnected that old VHD to the server. Somebody have any idea about this replication issue.....

Uninstalling VMM 2012 SP1 can cause any Network or Shared Storage Issues?

Hello There,

I'm studying for the 70-409 Exam and also planning to reinstall the VMM 2012 on my company, since it was created a long time ago and somehow the old administrator created the environment in a way that only he could understand.

After looking online and don't find any answers, I decided to create this thread to see if anyone can help me. My questions are:

1 - If I Uninstall the VMM, my Hosts will loose any network configuration? I already checked and I am not using any Logical Switches in the current configuration, and only have some Logical Networks created. Removing the VMM can cause any network issues on the physical hosts or in the VMs under it?

2 - Is there a guid somewhere about the Uninstall process? It could be in a book, there is no problem in buying it, but i really cannot find it anywhere.

Thanks!

Unable to reinstall VMM agent (2012 R2)

I uninstalled VMM agent on a host and tried to reinstall it, however I get the message "Another Virtual Machine Manager agent package is already installed. You must uninstall the existing agent first."

I'm running VMM 2012 R2 UR 3 on Server 2012 R2, the host in question is running Server Core 2012 R2. VMM agent version is 3.2.7672.0.

I looked at the install log and see "1: !VMM_Error! 2: 3":

MSI (s) (C4:6C) [10:30:15:517]: Doing action: CheckAgentPackageExists

I tried reinstalling because I was getting the following error on the host in the VMM console:

Error (20513)
The VMM management server cannot retrieve performance data for the computer. This issue may occur if the performance counter provider in the Virtual Machine Manager agent is corrupted.

Recommended Action
Restart the System Center Virtual Machine Manager Agent service on the computer. This automatically restarts the performance provider. If the error persists, reinstall the VMM agent on the computer.

VM Creation fails on cloud works on host

When I create a vm and choose to deploy it to my cloud it fails I get the error that I listed in this post

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/systemcenter/en-US/8692629f-250e-47c0-b7e7-3d709402e3e3/task-ids-in-vmm-2012?forum=virtualmachinemanager#d52fb8b1-11d4-4b58-8176-aca970de0c77

Yet when I back up and choose to deploy to an individual host it just works.

My cloud lists hyper-v under compatibility and when I make the vm I chose that option as well so they match. This issue only occurred after I pulled my two hosts into a hyper-v cluster. Per the above article when I attempt to lookup the ID listed in SQL nothing is returned.

is there  a way to dial up logging so I can see what's going on and where the issue is? am I just missing something dumb?

any help would be appreciated

SCVMM 2012 R2 - Creating a SQL Service Template with multiple drives

$

Hi All,

I am currently in the process of putting together a SQL service template for a single tier. The installation of SQL is sysprepped and I have all of my INI files saved and configured as a SQL profile in SCVMM.  A requirement of SQL installations for this service is that logs, TempDB, and backup locations must be on separate disks for storage tiering.

This is where my problems start.

The SQL service will not complete and fails out when looking for directories on drives other than c:\. I created a diskpart script that onlines the various disks that sysprep removes and sets the proper drive letter structure, however, I cannot get it to run before the SQL customization.

Methods tried:

  1. Add diskpart script to GUIRunOnce - does not run before SQL - works when not deployed with sql
  2. Create application profile with pre-install parameters in the service template - does not run before sql - works when not deployed with sql
  3. Place required settings in windowsPE pass of unattend.xml - does not run or make changes to required drives.
  4. Add diskpart script to %WINDIR%\Setup\Scripts\SetupComplete.cmd - does not run before SQL

I have also had success with exporting and importing the MountedDevices key in the registry, but my problem is that I can't seem to run anything before the SQL portion of the template customization starts.

Does anyone have a method to properly run a script prior to the SQL sysprep customization ?

Integration components does not work with a Virtual Machine running windows 2008 r2

I converted a physical windows server 2008 r2 machine to a virtual hard disk using disk2vhd. Then I created a virtual machine under windows server 2008 r2 Hyper-v with the virtual disk. I ran the integration components disk. It was successful, but nothing happened. My virtual machine can not connect to a network, mouse is not captured by the virtual machine. I also created a virtual machine with the same virtual disk under Windows server.2012 r2 Hyper-V. without installed the integration components, the virtual machine can start and  run. After installed the integration components, the virtual machine can not start. A blue screen showed up when it is reboot.

My windows server 2008 r2 and 2012 r2 Hyper-V both host virtual machines running window xp, vista and server 2003. They are all converted using Disk2VHD. There is no issues with them except this virtual windows server 2008 r2machine.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Remove host from cluster causes disconnected iscsi luns on other members of cluster

$

Hi,

about 2 weeks ago i removed a member (2008R2) from a cluster by using VMM2012R2. That evening i noticed that on our Dell Equallogic's all the ACL's were removed.
I contacted Dell about this and they told me that the audit loggings showed that the user 'vmm2012r2' initiated the removal of ALC's.

Today i removed the same member from the cluster (being busy with damage controll due to ex collegue) and i noticed that VMM2012R2 again started to remove the ACL's from the Equallogic's.
When checking the failover manager, a couple of CSV disks showed redirection mode. I checked the hyper-v hosts and they had a couple of disconnected iscsi luns. Luckily i added a accept any acl last week, otherwise all hyper-v hosts would be disconnected again. There was no network outage on production or storage when i removed the host from cluster.

When i came home, i noticed that 1 of the hyper-v servers, which was still a member of the cluster, had bsod. Didn't investigate that yet. However, this bsod also happend 2 weeks ago.

Were using the Dell Equallogic Storage Management provider and the array is responding.

Has anyone else encountered this issue? This is for us unexpected behaviour.

windows size / resolution when connecting via scvmm console

Hi

right... please see attached screenshot for my problem..

As you can see... the windows is the usual size, but the server VM it is displaying is not showing as it should.. something has gone wrong with the display settings..

The only resolution I've found, is to restart the server.. which isn't really an option with this server... it will cause quite a lot of problems....

What can I do to fix this?

I've tried the obvious stuff like dragging the window to increase the size etc... stuff like that..

but it must be something on the server since it fixes it self when I reboot an affected server...

Has anyone else seen this?

and what can I do to fix it :)

Cluster Live Storage Migration completes without deleting the source virtual hard disk VHDX

Testing HV setup in a cluster of two nodes with shared FC storage.  Storage is CSV on both nodes.  Storage migration of a VM from C:\ClusterStorage\A to C:\ClusterStorage\B completes without any problem.  Upon completion, the source VHDX are still left at C:\ClusterStorage\A.  The source files can be deleted manually.  All is done through VMM "Migrate Storage" option.  Why the storage migration does not delete the source files upon job completion?  Thanks!

Question re Adding a Cluster to a SCVMM 2012 R2 when already managed in SCVMM 2012.

Hi all,

I'm just having a "before I make this change I want to make sure I'm not going to cause havoc" moment so I am asking for some clarification, apologies if this has been asked elsewhere as I couldn't find an answer to this scenario.

Currently we have a SCVMM 2012 setup which is managing a Server 2012 Cluster, I have just set up a new SCVMM 2012 R2 system and 2012 R2 cluster, tested and it is ready to go, currently we are running both systems and plan to run both for a few months.

My question is as we want to migrate machines from the old to the new cluster, am I ok just to add the 2012 cluster to the SCVMM 2012 R2 console for purposes of migration, will this cause any negative effects with the old SCVMM or the cluster itself?

I'm confident it wont, but as this is production and I don't have a test lab here I thought best to see if anyone else has done this to put both mine and my managers mind at ease.

Many thanks

Kevin

Deploying OVA template

Hi all,

I have been trying to deploy an OVA/OVF template VM into Hyper-V environment. I have a 2012 SP1 beta version of VMM installed.

I am trying to follow the procedure below to import OVF tool.

http://technet.microsoft.com/library/jj158932.aspx

Now, I am getting the following error while I try to add the OVFtoolsnapin.

PS C:\Users\administrator.VBUAQP3> Add-PSSnapin OVFToolSnapIn
Add-PSSnapin : The Windows PowerShell snap-in 'OVFToolSnapIn' is not installed on this computer.

Can anyone help me in figuring out the issue. I have followed the rest of the procedure accurately.

Thanks.

Can't specificy location (CSV) for Virtual Hard Disks in VMM

$

Hello, we are deploying a new Hyper-V cluster using System Center Virtual Machine Manager (using Windows Server 2012 R2 and Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2). We have run into a curious issue.  We have setup our Clusters, Logical Networks, Storage Arrays, CSV, etc. (all our storage will be handled by CSV from our SAN).

However, when we go to deploy a new VM, we are unable to specify which LUN (CSV) to place the hard drive on (the Cloud decides for us and randomly picks SSD, FC, or SAS - the three classifications the Cloud has access to).  If we don't use Clouds and create a VM and place directly on a host, we can then manually change the path of drive at creation.  However, even if we don't use Clouds, and just try to add a Virtual Disk to an existing VM, we have no option to set the location of the Virtual Hard Disk, it is forcing us to place the VHD on the same LUN (CSV) as the Operating System Drive of the VM.

This is really bad for many of our VMs.  For example, if we want the OS on fiber channel disk, but need SQL log files on Solid State, we can't do this.  Or if we need OS on Fiber Channel and have archive data to put on SAS, we also cannot do this.

We tried setting up storage classifications, but the Classification box in the properties of the Virtual Hard Disk is always greyed out (we can see which classification it auto picked here after its created, but it won't ever let us select a classification - even before creation).  When just editing properties of a VM and creating a disk, there is never an option to select the LUN (CSV) at this point.

What are we missing here?  Thanks!

Modifying the size of an SMB 3.0 registered file share in SCVMM 2012 SP1

$

Hi -

We are leveraging the Netapp SMI-S 5.0 provider with SCVMM 2012 SP1 to register and use SMB 3.0 file shares on our HV clusters.  Working great after a few early problems.  One thing that we've yet to find is a solution to this problem.

On the netapp side, let's say a volume with size 1TB is created.  Then through SCVMM/SMI-S, a new file share is created within this volume for use with HV clusters/VMs.  Let's say, for example when creating this share through the SCVMM GUI that you define the file share size as 500gb.  This leaves 500gb free in the parent volume.

How in the world do you modify that file share size from the SCVMM perspective - if you start running low on space within the share.  The free space is definitely there, but we can't seem to find a way from within SCVMM to modify the file share 'size' (which is a parameter you have to define during file share creation) from original size to something larger (yet still smaller than parent volume size).

Anyone else seen this scenario and/or found a solution?  I apologize if this is already answered elsewhere - just not seeing much on searches.  Thanks in advance -

Running elevated scripts from SCVMM on a Hyper-V host

$

SCVMM 2012 R2 conveniently lets me run scripts on hosts using the Run Script Command.

When not using a runas account, the scripts are run on the host using the Local System account which seems to be unable to run elevated commands. In particular, I want to run the Get-VM Hyper-V cmdlet on the host, and this cmdlet does not work (or rather, returns an empty list) from a non-elevated Powershell.

I don't want to disable UAC because I don't want want to weaken overall security on the host just for this particular scenario.

Is it possible to use SCVMM's Run Script Command to run elevated commands on the host? Alternatively, can I get Get-VM to return the list of VMs even when run non-elevated?

(In case it's interesting, I want to run Get-VM on the host rather than Get-SCVirtualMachine on SCVMM because I'm interested in the IDs of the SCSI controllers of the VM, and it seems that SCVMM and Hyper-V each return different IDs. If there's a way to get the Hyper-V-visible ID from SCVMM cmdlets then I won't need to run any script on the host at all).

VM placement error 617

No matter what I do, I cannot get VM placement to change. I have two hosts that were once part of a cluster. I destroyed the cluster. However, the VM placement path when I deploy service templates is still the clusterstorage folder on C:. Even if I manually edit the vm placement property on both hosts, or if I destroy and recreate the service template - it doesn't update. the only way I got this to start working right is I removed the hosts and readded them.  My question is - is there another way to update the ACTUAL vm placement path in a host without having to add the host again? Thanks

Hi,

Does anybody know of any PowerShell scripts which I can use which will detach a VHD file from multiple VM's? I have a few hundred VM's that I need to detach a VHD from so could really do with a script!

Cheers
